Cnoc Suain is a unique and wonderful spot on a little hill, not far from the shore. It is cozy and clean, a little refuge. No TV, no wifi, just a fireplace and great hosts who give perfect advice on the area.

The location is absolutely gorgeous. We stayed for two nights and felt so relaxed. There is no internet or tv so you can definitely disconnect and enjoy the scenery. There is a radio available with a couple CDs. Turn on the music, sit by the fireplace and enjoy a cup of tea. Charlie and Dearbhaill are the sweetest hosts. They left some scones, jam, milk, eggs etc., for us. Amazing location and amazing hosts!

Do not second guess this for a moment! The little cottage was one of our favorite parts of our trip to Ireland. So peaceful and simple - we loved cooking breakfast in the home in the morning, and having the woodburning stove in the evenings. Cozy and out of a fairytale - can't wait to come back one day!

Wonderful, idyllic, and peaceful. My wife's favorite part of our trip. We didn't have a car (which I don't recommend unless you book a taxi in advance, or want to risk walking on the road itself or hitchhiking), and so even though we didn't leave the property during our stay, it was worth it. It seems most people use this as a base to explore the surrounding area, with (relatively) short drives to Galway, Connemara, and other places. We would do this next time, but even just being in this place was amazing, and provided a welcome cuddly respite from the rest of our trip. The bogland is beautiful, as is the house itself.

What a lovely place to spend a weekend at. Dearbhaill and Charlie are great hosts, and the breakfast hamper we found in the cottage was absolutely lovely.

We had a wonderful time at Cnoc Suain. It was centrally located for our day trips to Kylemore Abbey and Inishmore. The cottage is lovely, well appointed, clean and quiet. Charlie provided great recommendations for pubs in Spideal and Oughterard. We'd love to make it back!

Dearbhaill And Charlie User ProfileDearbhaill And Charlie is a superhost.

Hello, my name is Dearbhaill Standún and I am a musician and Gaelic speaker from Connemara. My husband – Charlie Troy – is a natural scientist and teacher and, together, over the past 20 years, we have restored Cnoc Suain as a cultural retreat. It is also our family home.

The combined passion we share for the culture and nature of Connemara has been our inspiration throughout the restoration of the hill-village. It is our pleasure to welcome you to this idyllic retreat. During your stay here we can happily recommend places, events, activities and experiences – both well known and lesser known – that bring you to the heart of the culture of the area. Examples: quiet country and seashore walks, good food, local festivals and traditional music pubs.

We are always encouraged by the positive comments from guests and journalists:

"This is one of those very rare times where you wish you could leave 6 stars on the place. This is an amazing experience - perfect place to disconnect and discover. Go and reward your soul." - AirBnB guest, Nick, NY.

“A beautifully restored hill village that sits on layers of Irish history, Cnoc Suain offers a thorough immersion in local culture. It is serving as a trailblazer and a powerhouse in promoting sustainability and mindfulness of the earth’s – and mankind’s – precious resources.”
'Global Vision Award' Winner – Travel + Leisure magazine

“Cnoc Suain is one of my favourite natural retreats, owned by two of the finest hosts I know, leading conservationists of both natural and cultural heritage, Dearbhaill Standún and Charlie Troy.” Catherine Mack, The Irish Times.

We have received national and international recognition for our cultural programmes, environmental stewardship and restoration work. Awards Cnoc Suain has won include a "Global Vision Award" from Travel + Leisure magazine and a "World Ethical Travel Award" from The Guardian newspaper. After winning the Irish award for Cultural Heritage at the Irish Centre for Responsible Tourism Awards held in Dublin in March 2015, Cnoc Suain later won a world award for Cultural Heritage at the World Responsible Tourism Awards held in London in November 2015.

In October 2015 Cnoc Suain was awarded a 2015 Phoenix Award, for cultural and environmental preservation, by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) at their annual convention held in Las Vegas . Each year the SATW award three US based projects and one international project. In 2014 the international award was won by a cultural project in China and in 2015 it was the turn of Cnoc Suain cultural retreat in Connemara!

We were delighted to receive a second Trip Advisor GreenLeaders Platinum Award for our conservation work in 2016.

In February of this year, 2017, Cnoc Suain was judged as Ireland's "Best Cultural Experience" by the Irish Tourism Industry Awards.
