Unbeatable location

100% of guests in the past year gave this location a 5-star rating.
The cottage, private and peaceful is set among gardens and native plantings in the hills 8 minutes from Shipwreck Bay, Ahipara.

Off grid, tucked against a forest backdrop with expansive views north along 90-mile beach and west to the surf breaks of Shipwreck Bay it is a welcome retreat away from the bustle of the beach.

The cottage, native plantings and gardens bear witness to the unpredictable temperament of the west coast; the same conditions that give us the beautiful surf on the point.

The space
The property, 2 acres, has expansive views of Tauroa Point/Shipwreck Bay and Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe/Ninety Mile Beach north to Cape Reinga.

Evening sunsets a specialty!

Developing the property has been an adventure in recycling, re purposing and continually asking "what do we really need? "It has allowed us to find acceptance in simplicity, create more with less and develop greater stewardship.

Thought has been given to creating multiple spaces with self sufficiency and restoring birdsong in mind. Watching the Kereru and Kahu swoop, dive and glide always a pleasure. Plantings and gardens help create these spaces - Vegetable gardens, an orchard, cottage gardens, accommodation and a home for the sheep.

Cooking is by way of a gas oven and hob. There is a fridge/freezer, on demand hot water via a califont and the necessary cutlery, cookware etc.

The bathroom has a shower over a small bath.
The toilet and sink run into a septic tank so it is important that no chemicals are put down the sink or toilet other than those provided.

Please be aware that we are solar powered only. Our simple power system can only support charging phones, batteries, laptops or blending smoothies. It is not an endless supply. Please use only the cooking methods provided. No electric fry pans, coffee machines, air fryers or hair driers etc. There is a plunger for coffee.

While suited for a couple there is a large sofa/bed and linen available for an extra person or room for a travel cot if you have a young child.

Enjoy your stay!

Guest access
The whole cabin, garden and drive way are yours to be at home in.

If you hunt around the front garden of the cottage there are some herbs, sometimes tomatoes or salad greens. Help yourself to those.

We have seasonal vegetables and herbs for sale at times. Feel free to ask.

Other things to note
Te Hiku-o-te Ika-a-Māui is the name given to the Far North by Māui. Te Hiku for short. It has a rich Māori and European history with a landscape that holds many significant cultural, sacred, and spiritual sites important to the Muriwhenua tribes. The collective name given to six iwi (tribes), Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Takoto, Te Pātū, Ngāti Kahu, Te Aupōuri and Te Rarawa.

Their story is not ours to tell, but we are happy to talk to what we know and point you in the right direction for answers. The Te Ahu center- home to Kaitaia's Library, Cinema, Museum and i-SITE Visitor Information Centre is a good place to start. The standing carved Pou in the entrance each tell a story of the Iwi and early Dalmatian settlers from Europe.

There are many places to get takeaway, dine in or cafe food in Kaitaia and Ahipara, as well as shops and markets for fresh food.

The following are just a few, they are not a recommendation, but somewhere to start.

Surfing, fishing, diving, mountains, rivers, creating gardens, we love it complete and love sharing it. As a family we feel blessed. A life, diverse in experience, often emerging from the simple act of sharing a cup of tea with others, exchanging knowledge, stories, and skills. Embracing the serendipitous nature of life, where chance encounters lead to new adventures. In creating the place, we call home
