If you are traveling through Europe, or looking for a magical place to have a reunion with friends or family, our thatched-roof farmhouse is perfect for you. It has a special soul to it, both inside and out: Six bedrooms, five bathrooms, well-equipped kitchen with six-burner gourmet stove, book-lined living room, wood-beamed office, covered terrace, pond, conservatory in the garden, and lots of romantic country character.
The inside is unique, with exposed wooden beams, a piano, an open kitchen with equipment for any feast, two inside open fireplaces, two staircases, a large library of English and German books, Wifi throughout the house, 2 flat-screen TVs with satellite television, DVDs and HDMI cables for streaming, a multi-room stereo system, a 'drying room' for muddy shoes or wet clothes, and a solid oak desk for writing and working. However, adults need to be vigilant with their children, especially the youngest of them. There are some potential hazards: intriguing and steep steps, unfenced pond in the back of the garden, open fireplaces, trees to climb... We want you to stay safe.
You will have access to all rooms. I just want to note that while up to 12 guests are welcome, the price rises with the number of guests - to accommodate the extra cleaning and care. Some new AirBnB users have been confused by this, but it is common practice for larger AirBnBs and we have found the system works well. Be sure to book with the exact number of guests you expect. If you are not sure yet, let me know and we can arrange for extra billings as guests confirm.
Interaction with guests
We won't be there personally, but our wonderful and welcoming neighbors Günter, Marion and Katharina will take care of you. As soon as you have booked, I will let them know your details and your arrival time. We will always be available for communication with them (or with you, if needed) via email and phone. As the AirBnB gets started this month, there will be reviews online of our farmhouse. We are Superhosts for our other house (feel free to take a look at our reviews) and I look forward to guests being just as happy here in the future :).
Other things to note
We use organic cleaning products and no pesticides in the garden. We have a working compost and we had lots of animals when the children were young. In our absence, we have an organic gardening company taking care of the lawn and flower beds. We will schedule their visits on days there are no guests. IMPORTANT: Our house is wonderful for older children, but there are a number of areas that need constant supervision with smaller children. There is an unfenced pond in the bottom of the garden. Also, one set of stairs in the house is long and steep, and can be a temptation for crawlers and toddlers. Please be vigilant.
PETS: We love dogs but have the following house rules. No animals upstairs and no animals on the furniture. We are surrounded by fields and nature. Please do not use the garden as a dog toilet. Please be respectful to future guests and follow these rules, so we don`t have a reason to deduct from your deposit.
-Our wonderful and welcoming neighbors will be greeting you and taking care of your stay. As soon as you have booked, I will let them know your details and your arrival time.
- We love dogs, but have a strict no dogs upstairs, and no dogs on the furniture rule. This is how we maintain a clean and welcoming living area. If your dog must sleep near you, please use the downstairs bedroom ONLY! and bring a blanket for the floor for the dog to sleep on.
- No shoes upstairs. This is common in German country houses, and it helps keep the home cosy.
- We have two inside fireplaces and one large outside fire pit. Our friends will show you where the wood is kept. DO NOT leave the house with fires going. You MUST have the screens in place.
- Our house has many doors and many nooks and crannies. Please read the House Rule book carefully upon arrival.
Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund. Cancel within 5 days of your trip and the first night is non-refundable, but 50% of the cost for the remaining nights will be refunded.
We are a family of five, German (MD, psychoanalyst) and American (anthropologist, at-home mama) with 3 children - the youngest now 14. We are New Yorker and Sueddeutsche Zeitung readers, 1/2 of us love to cook, we are curious about psychology and culture, and also value times of quiet and calm. Our children have grown up in the beautiful thatched-roof farmhouse in the German countryside which we now list on AirBnB. We love the 'living like a native' feeling you get going in and out of your own place with an AirBnB.
