We are at Portobello, half an hour from arty, historic and funky Dunedin city and a few minutes from unique wildlife destinations on Otago Peninsula. Portobello is a harbour-side village with a shop, cafes and pub.
At Fat Weka Farm, we offer:
- a comfortable haven in your own separate lodge
- breakfast tray of fresh baked scones, homemade jam and fresh coffee
- walks and spectacular views on our 50 acre property
- an extra warm welcome from our friendly dog Lexie.

The space
Fat Weka accommodation is a sunny self contained apartment with comfy bed, green views and plenty of birdsong...all on the edge of Portobello village on beautiful Otago Peninsula. Your private shower, toilet and basin is a short walk across the courtyard. Robes and footwear are provided.
We provide a start to your day with a breakfast tray of home baked scones with Jeannie's Kitchen jams or jellies and plunger coffee. Tea and coffee making facilities available in your room. Space is available in a refrigerator if required to store food. There is also: TV, mini stereo and microwave oven.
This space has been newly built with travellers comfort in mind. It has a comfortable queen bed with a view up to bush covered hills. French doors open out to a private covered verandah facing north so it gets all the sun and is perfect for reading and relaxing.
There is parking space beside the lodge available for guests.

We are in the rural zone so are not connected to city facilities. We collect rainwater so the water pressure in the shower is 'gentle'. You are welcome to wash any clothes and dry them on our clothes line but for a big wash, a better option is to be found at the nearby camping ground/ holiday park, which has a coin operated laundry.

Guest access
Fat Weka is much more than a comfy bed and a place to chill. Allow time to explore our property of regenerating forest, new planted orchard and spectacular views of the peninsula. Meet our pets Lexie the dog, Sooki the cat, Jack and Marmite our pet sheep. Our property borders a popular walking track so you may meet local people walking the circuit over the hill and back to the village.

Other things to note
We are close to town, but we are also in the country, which has many benefits. However, we gather our own rainwater and that means the water pressure in the shower does not have big city power, but is perfectly adequate. Also, we ask you to be mindful that our water supply is not endless.
You have your own bathroom facilities, which are a short walk across the courtyard ... and for those few steps we provide robes and crocs and lights to guide you at night. There is coffee and tea making facilities and a microwave to heat food but no real kitchen in your room. You are however welcome to use our kitchen if you want to.

We offer information about local wildlife and tourist attractions and our property and Permaculture garden. Jeannie loves cooking and has a food blog (URL HIDDEN) Peter is an actor and writer and has produced many wildlife documentaries. Lexie our friendly dog loves to go on walks on the property and Sooki the cat may even join you. Jack and Marmite our pet sheep love being fed sheep nuts by hand.

The local Portobello hotel does a really good Blue Cod and chips and Penguin Cafe offers good coffee and homemade muffins, scones and pies. The local shop is very well stocked and has a large range of fresh and deli type produce.

Portobello is at a cross roads with one way a short drive to the city and the other way easy access to wildlife tourist attractions on land and water, from albatross and penguins, to nearby beaches with seals and sea lions, wonderful night sky viewing over Hoopers Inlet and the historic Larnach Castle with magnificent gardens and views over the peninsula.

I love to cook and get great satisfaction to harvest my own home grown food. We purchased this amazing property in 2015 and I have given myself the challenge of setting up a Permaculture orchard, berry garden and to grow enough vegetables to sell at the gate one day. As a cook I like to experiment with flavours and enjoy making jams and jellies from wildfare fruits that visitors can taste with freshly baked scones or muffins. Sharing what we have learnt about nature and gardening has been one of the drivers in setting up a B&B. We are lucky to live in a such a peaceful environment and would like to share our place with travellers.
