Our sunny, creatively designed self-catering cottage is available for your work or holiday stay in the leafy suburb of Parkview, in the heart of Johannesburg. Designed with comfort and convenience in mind, enjoy the sunny, private garden. Close to shops, restaurants and vibey Melville. Fast uncapped wifi and limited cable TV. Let us give you an insider view of the Johannesburg we love. Parking on premises. Our 2 secure cottages have private pedestrian access from our driveway. We speak Spanish.

The space

We offer a sunny, bright one bedroom cottage with living area, kitchenette and bathroom. Private and secure, it opens through double doors onto a sunny, peaceful, private garden where many of our guests like to dine and relax.
It does not have a full kitchen but a microwave, counter-top stove/hotplate, fridge, kettle, toaster and dishes are supplied.
The bathroom with a shower (no bath).
The cottage provides space for your work and relaxation. Relax on the couch to enjoy the (limited) cable TV. Catch up on email and work at the work/dining table using the fast uncapped wifi.
A lot about how we have designed the cottage is a result of our own experience of travelling widely and of what works for us when we travel. We have created a home away from home that is simple and peaceful yet has what a traveller needs in self-catered accommodation. Our guests have told us that it work.
Oscar and Michelle have furnished and decorated the cottage to illustrate what they see as the richness of living in southern Africa. Both Oscar’s photographs, which hang in the cottage, as well as the local art and craft displayed, show what we love about living here
From the peaceful cottage you would not guess that there are shops and restaurants in walking distance and that the city, Johannesburg’s universities and the vibey and popular nightlife of Melville are a ten minute drive away.
The cottage is serviced once a week – it is cleaned, tidied and linen and towels changed. We are happy to arrange that the cottages are cleaned on extra days for a small additional fee.
We don’t offer a laundry service and instead guests have access to a washing machine and washing line on the property. We also guide guests to the “drop and collect” laundry service in the neighbourhood.
There is secure parking on the premises for one car. Our 2 secure cottages share pedestrian access from our driveway.
The cottage accommodates 2 people sharing. An extra person will be a squeeze but we are willing to allow one additional guest for an additional R75/person/night

Guest access

There is parking for one car on the premises. Our 2 secure cottages have private pedestrian access from our driveway.
Taxi services operate in the area, with Uber being prompt and reliable in our neighbourhood and surrounds.
We give guests cottage keys and a gate remote.
We know Johannesburg and SA very well and are ready to help you have an insider’s experience of this fascinating city. We also are ready to help and where possible look forward to proving anything you may need.

Interaction with guests

Your friendly hosts Oscar and Michelle will respect your privacy completely if preferred. But we are always delighted to share an insider's knowledge about the fascinating city of Johannesburg, the best places to visit, and the restaurants we most like to visit. Guests have total privacy, with separate access and inside parking.
We also love interacting with our guests over Spanish food and a glass of wine.

Other things to note

Our home is on the property. Oscar works from home but guests will not be affected by this.
The paved path to the cottage takes guests past the other cottage we have on the property.
The property is secure.
We have two small dogs who do not have access to the cottage areas unless guests chose to have them there.
We offer secure parking for one car.
We offer guests complete privacy but are very happy to interact with guests who chose to do so, and to offer an insider view of great places to visit in Johannesburg.
The cottage does not have its own washing machine/ but guests have access to a washing machine.
For guests who don't have their own car, Uber and other taxi services operate in the area. Public transport is available but limited. There is a Gautrain railway station a 10-15 minute drive away.
Close to shops, restaurants, golf course, Zoo, Melville, SABC, the Universities (Wits and Johannesburg). Twenty minutes from Sandton.

Oscar place is just wonderful - we already went back and made a second booking! The cottage is light and sunny. It is very secure and safe in a beautiful woodsy neighborhood which is close to everything. This is the place to be in Joburg - a stone's throw from Melville, Parkview and Zoo Lake happenings. We brought our car and there's plenty of parking space at the house. It is great for both short and longer stays with a well equipped kitchen, private outdoor space, access to laundry and a wonderful comfy bed. We actually wished we were staying longer. The best treat of all is that Oscar is just a fantastic host and made sure that we were comfortable at all times. Turns out that Oscar is a professional photographer who has connections everywhere and knows half of Joburg (and the best half). If you come to stay at his place you must promise to hear some of his stories and how he's personally interwoven in South African history. He somehow managed to get our last minute perfect seats at The Orbit - THE jazz club in Joburg - and we realized that his photos are decorating the place.

Oscar is a great host. He makes you feel welcomed, is always available to help but also gives you the privacy you need. He's an amazing photographer and has lots of stories to tell if you invite him over (and you'll see his work at museums and restaurants around the city!). The place is cozy, nice and really clean. We could ask delivery food or cook when we had the chance. The location is also one of the best in town and very near the coolest and modern neighborhoods. Thanks for sharing your place, time and a bit of your knowledge with us!

Oscar's cottage makes a fabulous base for setting up in Gauteng - it's close to everything, but deep within the forested peace of Parkview that makes fir a tranquil stay. Lovely!

The unit is well equipped as a self-catering unit (Blue Lavender) and has all the essentials needed for a comfortable stay. It is situated in a very scenic and peaceful part of Parktown and it was fantastic chatting to Oscar about his impressive photography. I would recommend it again.

I had a lovely stay in Oscar's cottage. I knew I had come to the right place when I saw Don DeLillo and Italo Calvino on the bookshelf. The place is in good condition, and has a real personal touch because of Oscar's photographs hung on the walls. You also have a lot of privacy with a little garden of your own. I found it ideal for working on music and writing. The neighbourhood itself is one of the safer ones in Johannesburg, as well as quiet, yet close to everything.

Oscar Parkview User ProfileOscar Parkview is a superhost.

From Guatemala, I spent my childhood in Central America before moving to the United States at the age of 18 to study engineering. Having worked as an engineer for some years, my passion for photography took me to the University of Rochester, New York, where I studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since then I have worked as a professional photographer which has taken me all over the world.

Since my first job as a photographer, at NASA in the US, I have travelled and lived for short periods in Latin America, the Caribbean, Israel, Canada, Mozambique – but since 1994 I have called South Africa home.

I have been lucky – since arriving in southern Africa I have documented a range of events and issues in politics, arts and culture, religion and other fields. I have been privileged to cover some significant political and cultural events in southern Africa, from the first general elections in South Africa in 1994, to Mozambique’s first general elections after the country’s independence from Portugal, to living conditions of Mozambican refugees in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa.

When I am not working, my partner Michelle and I enjoy South African music, road trips around the country, spending time uncovering the vibrancy of this region.

Michelle and I moved to our Parkview home 4 years back and find that living in a peaceful and beautiful area mean we can relax and enjoy the birds, outdoor living – as well as the restaurant and café culture of the area and surrounds. Melville, a popular night spot, is a 20 minute walk from our home.

While renovating our home we spent 3 months living in one of our cottages and through that, we worked out what was needed to make it comfortable and convenient to live in. The renovation process was what prompted us to start offering the cottages to guests – as well as the fact that we thought the peace and quiet of the place would suit others. We have two independent cottages, both of which are renovated to cater for guests’ needs.

Being an Airbnb host suits my personality - I love cooking Latin food for friends or guests, chatting to the people who stay in the cottages and telling guests about this city. Johannesburg is a great place to discover South Africa but many of its charms are hidden – meaning it is fun to give guests an insiders’ guide to the area.

Michelle is South African and grew up in Cape Town before moving to Johannesburg. She has also lived in London and Chicago. She started off as a financial journalist and then made a move to the corporate world. She now works for the Johannesburg Stock Exchange where her portfolio includes investor relations and communications. She is a classically trained musician.
