About this listing

Glendaruel is framed by native forest and looks out over the beautiful waters of Paterson Inlet to Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary, a must-do destination for nature lovers. It is 8-10 minutes' walk into the centre of our only village and close to amenities, walking tracks and the water taxi wharf. Guests are met at the ferry or air terminal and taken back at the end of their stay.
Bird lovers will be enthralled by the large number of different native birds that visit my large, colourful garden..

The space

My home is just that - a much-loved house with spacious guest areas - lounge, sunroom, three decks with sea and forest views, antique furniture and original art works.
The queen bedroom is upstairs and has a spectacular view into the forest canopy - lie in bed and watch our feisty native birds dispute the treetops!
Ensuite bathroom, table and chairs, tea and coffee facilities all make for a relaxing, private and peaceful place.

Guest access

There is a large guest lounge with two balconies giving views of Paterson Inlet to the south and a wide sweep of native forest to the north and west. TV, lots of DVDs, books and music, if you can tear your eyes and ears away from the birds!
Breakfast is served in the sunroom overlooking a sheltered valley of native forest, alive with birdsong.
At ground level an extensive deck and comfortable outdoor furniture provide a perfect spot to relax and drink in the views of garden, forest and more of those birds. Wander round the garden and enjoy the many different and unusual plants.

Interaction with guests

I have travelled overseas often and hope I have a good appreciation of the needs of my guests. A priority is helping my guests with booking activities and meals to make the most of their time on this special island.
Setting the scene over a welcoming cup of tea or coffee is important, as is a friendly chat at breakfast time and at the end of the day.

Other things to note

Stewart Island enjoys a varied climate and four seasons can be experienced in one day! Raingear, stout walking shoes and layered clothing are recommended and will ensure your comfort.
Insect repellent and sunscreen are available at the local supermarket.

The house is just lovely and the room comfortable with a view right into NZ flora. Raylene picked us up and brought us back from the harbour, helped with our tour and was just in every way a wonderful host - thank you Raylene! A great place to stay.

We had a fantastic stay with Raylene and MacPherson at Glendaruel. Raylene made us feel very welcome in her home. Our room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. We were provided with a delicious breakfast in the mornings, we highly recommend the rhubarb if it is available!

I am a New Zealander who has chosen to spend my retirement years on this beautiful island. I love the unspoiled nature of Stewart Island and especially the many native birds that visit my garden.
In another life I taught Latin, French and Classical Studies, still major passions along with my love of travel, cooking, gardening, kayaking and reading. France, especially the Pyrenees, is my overseas holiday destination of choice. Greece, especially Crete, is not far behind!
My Cairn Terrier, Macpherson, keeps me relatively fit and humble - a much loved but distinctly independent personality, he is a great favourite with the many guests we enjoy hosting together.
