My place is close to the national park, sea, beach, rivers and art and culture events. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space, quietness, the neighbourhood, and the comfy bed. My place is good for couples and solo adventurers.

The space
Tui Cabin is nestled some 160m above sea at the edge of native bush near Paparoa National Park. It is private and quiet except for native birds songs, hence the Tui name after many native Tui birds around, and distant sound of sea waves. The cabin is simple but comfortable for up to two (2) adult persons, sorry there is no room for any additional persons. It has one large double bed (the bedding and towels are provided), twin hob gas cooker, kitchen utensils, pots and crockery, washing sink and shower/bath tub with hot water from a gas califont under the verandah and a separate composting/long drop toilet.

The cabin is off grid and any tele/internet-communication facilities are not available in the cabin. The electric power is provided from a small solar system just enough for lights in the evening and to charge small devices and run a small 45 L bar chiller.

It is a great place to relax and unwind and be close to beautiful native forest and sea. Staying for more than one day is recommended to better appreciate/enjoy the place, near beaches, forest walks and other nature attractions.

It is a bush cabin with outside facilities but it is kept as clean and tidy as possible with fresh bedding etc. If you after a clinically clean place this may not be the one for you.

Guest access
The access to the cabin is off State Highway 6 (SH6) and about 400m long gravel driveway which is a bit steep in some places but not too difficult for any passenger car, slow drive in the first gear is recommended. The parking space in front of the cabin is ample for one car. Large and long vehicles like house-buses and campers should check with the host first whether they can drive safely up the driveway.

When you get to Tui Hill and start driving up the gravel driveway please ignore the first household and its 2 small cottages/cabin on the right, though they have a similar name, just continue further up the hill till you see signs, green on white, pointing to Tui Cabin and the parking place.

Sorry, but there is no suitable access for disabled people.

The cabin is just 10 km north from Punakaiki and 2 km south from the Fox River bridge.

Other things to note
Electric power supply is from solar/battery system and is limited just enough for lights and to charge small devices and a small 46L bar chiller.

The months from November to March usually offer very warm to hot temperatures, that Pacific Island balmy weather feel, but if you feel a bit chilly at night there is a spare blanket and duvet, and if you need the wood burner can heat up the place well, just ask the host to give you some instructions on how to start/run it, it can be a bit fiddly. Please never use the gas cooker or any other gas/petroleum devices to heat the place as they generate carbon-monoxide (CO) which can be lethal, deadly.

There is a small 46 L bar chiller which runs on the solar generated electricity and stored in a small battery. To preserve the Barty charge and cool temperature inside the caller please limit the door opening and ensure the door is shut well.

Please bring with you provide/cook all the food you need for your stay. There are places to eat in Punakaiki and to buy simple groceries but larger supermarkets and other restaurants are in Westport and Greymouth roughly 50 km north or south. The nearest fuel stations are as well about 50 km away so please make sure, if you travel by car/motorbike using petrol/diesel top up in Greymouth or Westport.

If you want to go for a long forest walk it is a good idea to leave with the host or Department of Conservations (DOC Visitors Centre is in Punakaiki) a note where you going and time when you are expected to return.

The nearest mobile/cellphone coverage is in Punakaiki, about 10 minutes drive.

Yes, the sandflies, those little opportunistic insects, which you might have already come across. The land the cabin is on is elevated above the sea and fortunately we “enjoy” smaller numbers of them but they are still around during day time, at night they sleep and won't be bothering you. Some people can react to their bite, it is advised you try not to scratch and the itch should go away.

The tap water comes from a spring/creek in the forest above the cabin and we drink it straight from the tap and use for cooking, washing etc. It has some calcium hardens hence some staining on pots and sink bench.

Please no smoking inside the cabin and in dry weather periods please be careful with any open flame outside.

Location

Fox River, West Coast, New Zealand

The cabin is just 10 km north from Punakaiki with its famous Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes and 2 km south from the iconic old timber Fox River bridge, and Paparoa National Park borders with the land the cabin is on. The beaches, native rain-forest are just a walk away or a short drive. The beach at the mouth of Fox River has plenty of driftwood for bonfires and BBQs where you can watch most amazing sunsets with the famous green flash.

The stretch of State Highway 6 between Punakaiki and Fox River and further north is one of the most amazing and stunning coastal drives on this planet. The area offers any type of outdoor attractions from beach and forest walks, fishing and hunting, to surfing and cave exploring. Swimming in the sea is a bit difficult and can be dangerous because of large waves, strong drifts and currents, a quick dip and run back to Terra Firma should be fine. Or if you are into more relaxed activities just gather some firewood on the beach and hold on to a cool drink and watch magical sunsets and rolling waves. If you are here on a Summer Sunday it is good to go to our local Fox River Market with great foods and local arts and crafts products, it runs, say, from 10 am till 3 pm.

I live north of Punakaiki, West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. I work as self employed civil engineer, try to do it as part time employment. I like occasional travels, especially to Pacific Islands and meeting local people (AirBnB allows this very well) but over all I like staying at my place for its sheer beauty, fun local people and mild climate etc.

During your stay
The host should be near when you arrive so honk/toot/shout a couple of times on your arrival and someone should show up, if not please move in and make yourself home in the cabin and someone should be with you soon.

Once you are settled in the host can be found in the house just further up the driveway to answer any of your questions or give you some guidance on the attractions in the area or just have a chat and a cup of tea.

The place is very quiet and private and the hosts like to keep this way for your relaxed stay.
