This is a zen place if you want to stay in a peaceful and quiet place. Rick show us the house. The breakfast was amazing. Katy prepared fruits, yogurt, cereal, and soy/coconut milk every morning. She even gave us a Quang lesson. High recommend their house!

My boyfriend and I stayed with Rick and Katy Joy August 5-10 and I have to say, the house and hospitality are outstanding! The house is in a very private area 9 miles from Volcano National Park, allowing us to return each night to see the "glow" of the caldera. The room was huge in comparison to hotel rooms - queen bed, two twin beds and a couch and coffee table! Completely ours for for entire stay. Not to mention the walk-in closet with dresser and bathroom with double sinks and extra large shower! Bathroom toiletries were provided as well as ample towels and beach gear, extra blankets and even novels if reading is desired. We fell asleep listening to frogs and crickets. That is just the room. Outside is a pool, loads of space to go on hikes, parking, etc. Unlike other Airbnbs, breakfast is offered - amazingly delicious vegetarian breakfasts - yogurt, papaya, bananas, granola, and coffee! They were a great way to fuel our very busy days. When we booked, communication from Rick was pretty much immediate! Very responsive! Last, but certainly not least, I cannot speak highly enough of the friendly, welcoming, "joyous" nature of Katy Joy! When it was time to leave, we found ourselves lingering, truly enjoying our conversation, as we did each day at breakfast! We really felt at home! Katy Joy offered us many unique suggestions for restaurants, attractions and local activities as she has a wonderful knowledge of the area! We cannot wait to return! I cannot recommend it enough!!!!

Rick and Joy were very pleasant and helpful. Their home was immaculate. They offered breakfast, but unfortunately I did not have time to partake. I highly recommend their stay.

Our stay was mixed. Most of our concerns were ultimately addressed, but it definitely took negotiations and complaints after their less than desirable/welcoming first responses or initial approaches. We arrived on a rainy afternoon and were instructed to park about 50 feet down a slope from where we could unload the luggage. They offered to help, but giving us the optional to unload first would have been much better so we didn't have to drag our stuff over dirt and gravel in the rain. The room we booked didn't have an attached bathroom and we were shocked to find out that the bathroom was about 20 feet across the open air (rain) and on the other side of the swimming pool -- more like a location of an outhouse. After we raised the concern of walking in the rain to just use the restroom and the potentially danger of possibly failing into the pool (no barriers) on the way there, the initial response was that's the room you booked as if we were contesting the room assignment. After we requested to move to a different room and pay the difference, they agreed. At that time, we were the only guests in the house. As we waited for an alternative room to get ready, we were asked to sign a release form taking responsibility for any damage to the property or injury and defend them regardless of fault. We had to point out just how unreasonable that would be and had the document changed before we agreed to sign. Meanwhile, we were asked to sign into an incredibly slow wifi connection (think of dial up if you are old enough) to update the room assignment via AirBnB. The Wifi was so slow that we couldn't accomplish this simple task and had to sign into another internet connection to finish the task. We could only use slow wifi in our room as that's the only option. We were give the option to come to the living room to leverage the faster wifi if we have the need, but knowing the living room was only open during specific hours of the day, we didn't take advantage of the offer. As more of similar issues came up during our stay, we definitely had to take put our vacation mood on hold to deal with these issues. It would have been so much easier had they approached everything from a guest's prospective first and offer suggestions and alternatives from the start. Aside from these issues, the conversations around their house, their plans, and their recommendations for activities were pleasant. The house is new and the room we ultimately stayed in was large and comes with a small fridge. However, you pretty much have to deal with anything you eat or drink (other than water) in the main house during prescribed hours listed in the house rules. Be prepared for really slow wifi, read and remember the house rules in detail, examine whatever you have to...

Response from Rick And Katy Joy:
We did our utmost to welcome this nice older man and his daughter (she wrote the review). 1.When they drove up I greeted them and carried their large luggage to their room. She stated that the parking was 50 feet away – I am not sure if she expected the parking to be in front of her door, but it was fairly close to their private entrance. 2. When we showed them the room and then their full private bathroom, they did not like the fact it was not an attached bathroom. She noted that they had to walk 20 feet to get to it but there is a covered walkway to the bathroom that can be used if it is raining. 2. We upgraded them to a larger room with a full attached bathroom. We called AirBnB and had the upgrade comped to them so they got the upgrade for free. 3. She referred to the original full private bathroom as being like an "outhouse" - this is a 6 year old, $1.5M house and everything about it is of the highest quality. 4. The woman complained about a slow WI-fi connection and after they left we discovered that she had put the router on the "sleep mode" and that was why it didn't function. We did let her know that she could use the main room anytime as it has a separate router. 5. Most AirBnB ROOMS do not offer a private full bathroom, complementary breakfast nor the use of a fully-stocked kitchen. We do and yet this women complained that even though we had this nice addition, it wasn't open 24 hours a day for her. Please note our Nature Lodge's 63 (sixty three) 5-Star Reviews and our status as Super Hosts and understand that some people just like to complain. Come visit us on The Big Island and enjoy our spacious rooms and great hospitality. Mahalo Rick and Katy Joy

Great place to stay! Great hospitality!! It's little bit off road when you enter the entrance so I recommend to have 4*4 SUV. Everything was great. Katy's healthy breakfast was awesome. Rick and Katy are very nice. If you don't know where to go, ask Katy and Rick. They have lots of information. House is beautiful and clean.
