The Bawden Furnace Schoolhouse was built in the 1870's and is close to downtown Galena (3.2 mi.), art and culture. The rustic ambiance, natural surroundings, and airy floor plan with wood burning stove make it easy to relax, unplug and unwind. The schoolhouse is perfect for couples and solo adventurers who are looking for a true getaway.
The cottage is a former one room schoolhouse that served the children of lead miners. The Bawden Furnace was the lead mine in which the adults worked. The stone walls are 2 feet thick, and you will notice this detail in the window sills. The front porch is great for bird watching while sitting in the rockers. We have seen many bald eagles from that vantage point. The side patio is perfect for grilling outside while listening to nature.
Guests have access to the 0.9 acres of property immediately surrounding the cottage. There is varied plant and wildlife. Please do not touch or eat anything that you are unsure of, and watch your step when walking about!
Interaction with guests
We respect your privacy, yet are happy to help and support you while you are visiting the Stone Cottage. We are just a stone's throw away.
Other things to note
The bedroom is situated in an open loft on the second level. If you are not comfortable with stairs, you may want to look elsewhere. This is a rustic getaway, therefore no TV is provided. Limited bandwidth internet access may be provided (no streaming, sorry.)
PARKING- parking is available next door in front of the yellow house at 8506. Per Jo Daviess County rules, you may only load and unload in the parking area/driveway at the stone cottage. From there, they require you to park in front of the white 9 ft parking zone next door. They would like you to park parallel to the roadway and facing the white fence. The county also recommends that you walk the wood chip path to go to and from your car for safety. Thanks!
I am a nurse, and my husband is a social worker. We have one cat named Maggie, and a dog, Sienna. We enjoy cycling, hiking, cooking, eating and working outside with our hands. We are non-smokers, health conscious, and like to experience new cultures and cuisines. We prefer quiet nights by the fire over active nightlife. One of my favorite spots in Chicago is the Lurie Garden designed by Piet Oudolf. In Galena, I enjoy the sounds of nature around me.
