The Bawden Furnace Schoolhouse was built in the 1870's and is close to downtown Galena (3.2 mi.), art and culture. The rustic ambiance, natural surroundings, and airy floor plan with wood burning stove make it easy to relax, unplug and unwind. The schoolhouse is perfect for couples and solo adventurers who are looking for a true getaway.

The space

The cottage is a former one room schoolhouse that served the children of lead miners. The Bawden Furnace was the lead mine in which the adults worked. The stone walls are 2 feet thick, and you will notice this detail in the window sills. The front porch is great for bird watching while sitting in the rockers. We have seen many bald eagles from that vantage point. The side patio is perfect for grilling outside while listening to nature.

Guest access

Guests have access to the 0.9 acres of property immediately surrounding the cottage. There is varied plant and wildlife. Please do not touch or eat anything that you are unsure of, and watch your step when walking about!

Interaction with guests

We respect your privacy, yet are happy to help and support you while you are visiting the Stone Cottage. We are just a stone's throw away.

Other things to note

The bedroom is situated in an open loft on the second level. If you are not comfortable with stairs, you may want to look elsewhere. This is a rustic getaway, therefore no TV is provided. Limited bandwidth internet access may be provided (no streaming, sorry.)

This was our first visit to Galena and we weren’t sure if we wanted to stay downtown or a little further out in the country. We without a doubt made the right choice! Trisha’s cottage had it all for us. It was cozy and charming and very well outfitted for a weekend stay. There is quick access to downtown Galena and when we were done exploring we looked forward to returning to our quiet place in the woods. The cottage was very clean and nicely decorated. We actually found it more spacious inside than it looks from the road. We especially enjoyed the wood burning fireplace which was ready to go for us when we arrived. The full kitchen is a great feature especially if you are planning an extended stay. We left the cottage feeling rested and relaxed and even with a bit of longing for our own place in the woods.

Trisha's place is a beautiful, hidden gem. The loft area and the bed are super cozy. The bed itself was really comfortable. This is a perfect quiet retreat for a couple or for one person. Trisha and her husband were very attentive and kind.

I can't even begin to list all the ways that I loved my stay at Trisha and Mark's cottage. It really is a gem! The location is amazing...close enough to all that Galena offers, but out of the way enough to be a peaceful haven of relaxation. If you are looking for a place to get away from the noise and the chaos of the world, to relax on the front porch, take long walks listening to the sounds of nature, or to relax in front of a wood burning stove, this is the place. The cottage has such a welcoming and cozy appeal. I can't wait to return! Trisha and Mark are WONDERFUL hosts. They are so kind and accommodating and have the cabin so well equipped and inviting. I would recommend staying here to anyone and everyone. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!

Great place with lots of charm. A great place to stay to be within miles of attractions but removed enough to be peaceful.

I am a nurse, and my husband is a social worker. We have one cat named Maggie, and a dog, Sienna. We enjoy cycling, hiking, cooking, eating and working outside with our hands. We are non-smokers, health conscious, and like to experience new cultures and cuisines. We prefer quiet nights by the fire over active nightlife. One of my favorite spots in Chicago is the Lurie Garden designed by Piet Oudolf. In Galena, I enjoy the sounds of nature around me.
