Enjoy a full size bed in our artistically renovated urban prairie home surrounded by fields, pheasants & our 5 neighbors. Biking/driving distance from downtown, arts & culture/university area & Southwest. We have 2 dogs & 2 gardens.

The space

Jhon got our home in 2007 when it was a shell, no wiring, plumbing and many of the walls and flooring was holey. Since then, it has become a beautiful artistic home with a garden where we live with our two dogs. Our 10-year-old nephew sometimes stays with us weekends.

Jhon's philosophy is to use what you have and also to honor history. Most of what's in our house has been created or repaired using salvaged materials. Many of the walls show the layers of wallpaper and paint from over the years--we would gently scrape away any flaking paint and then seal it in with a clear coat.

We don't consider the house "done" but we are a roofer & a violin teacher, so we do what we can when we get some savings or find the materials we need to complete a new project.

Private bedroom. Washing machine. Shared kitchen. Shared bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower. 2 shared living rooms and 1 shared library. Backporch & 2 gardens. Greenhouse. Art Park nextdoor. Surrounding fields.

Access to kitchen & fridge. Breakfast will be serve-yourself cold cereal (something good and organic) with whole milk from a Michigan dairy in the area. Also you can make coffee using our beans & French press with sugar, honey & milk available too.

Both of us work so we may not be able to spend long breakfasts or dinners chatting but it depends on the day and the week. We don't promise tours of the city or anything like that but we will offer suggestions and answer your questions.

I love that my neighborhood is surrounded by fields because it means we can run the dogs very easily, have wildflowers in the summer and explore with our nephew. I love our neighbors. We only have 5 houses on our block but we are like a family. Next to our house is an Art Park created & maintained (somewhat) by youth. I love that there are children in our neighborhood.

There is no convenient public transit. You can rent a bike from The Hub or Fender Bender--you could borrow one of our bikes if you are short like us & if our bikes are available. We are located a 10-15 minute bike ride from Southwest Detroit, Woodbridge, the Cass Corridor, Wayne State area, Detroit Institute of Art & the library.

We do have a few other spaces where more people can sleep including a 2nd guest room, the library day bed and the loft's queen size mattress.

If you are traveling with a small group that would like to stay a short amount of time, please ask about the other rooms.

We have had small groups do retreats at our house. The upstairs living room is very sweet for meetings since there are 2 couches and space to sit on the carpet with lots of pillows. Also our Smart TV could be handy.

We stayed for one weekend night in early October for impromptu strip to Detroit. Clara is super sweet host and two dogs are super friendly and adorable! The room we stayed in is spacious and the bed was comfortable! I really liked the bathrooms (and the tub!). Had chance to have small morning conversation with Clara, and got ton of puppie love from the dogs! We loved it! Hope to stay again with her in the future! Great host and house!

I stayed at Clara's place for a month while I hunted for a place to live in Detroit. I can't say enough wonderful things about my stay. Clara and Jhon are such warm and welcoming hosts. I instantly felt at home in their wonderful abode. There home is even more beautiful in person. It feels like every inch has been thoughtfully crafted from interesting reclaimed materials. It's feel authentically Detroit. The bedroom is big with a lot of privacy and the private bathroom is conveniently right across the hall. Woodbridge is a quick bike ride downtown, but offers the quiet and serenity of a country home with a big backyard for some added natural peace. I forgot to mention to Clara that I'd be staying with my bike. She offered their shed for safekeeping and even lent me a portable bike pump when my tires went flat. They have two well behaved dogs that love to cuddle and really warm up the house when it's empty. I'm really going miss them. They offered me a few delicious warm cooked meals when they had extra and shared some of their yummy coffee. I'm so grateful! All and all my stay was the perfect home away from home during a tough transition time for me. Clara and Jhon were perfect hosts and their home is beyond beautiful. I highly recommend it!

Clara's place is great! She and her husband put great effort in decorting the room they have on Airbnb. It's very comfortable and large. Both of them are very friendly and open and helped me a lot in getting started. I did really enjoy my stay and would definitley recommend it to anyone who would like to live a bit outside of downtown. Really, the only disadvantage is the distance to the city centre but you can easily get around this using Lyft or Uber. I even tried the bus one time. Also worked but took a little longer.

Clara and her partner Jhon are wonderful, friendly and very welcoming people. The hospitality was top notch! I stayed for an extended period of time and had no troubles what so ever. The neighborhood is seculded from the downtown action but still a 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic. I loved the area, it's definitely is a jewel in the rough. I would recommend this place to my friends!

Jhon and Clara were welcoming and friendly and their home is a beautiful living space. The attention to detail and artistry throughout was really appreciated. We were comfortable in our lovely room and enjoyed sitting on back porch, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Plenty of greenspace gave it a feel of being in the country rather than the hood! Our only regret was our short stay - for one night, in town for a concert. We would definitely book it again to explore more of downtown Detroit.

My partner Jhon and I love our house very much. We're excited to give you a tour, pointing out how each detail was built or repaired. Our dogs, Roofus and Clover, will likely follow, hoping to get pet.

I teach violin lessons & lead little kids' music classes around the city. Jhon sells records and repairs slate roofs. He's also a poet and is in the punk band called Collapse.

I am originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I've been in Detroit since 2006. Jhon was born in Detroit. His parents met in middle school in Southwest Detroit.

We like to go to the Detroit Film Theater and the Trumbullplex, where we met booking shows together. We attend the Allied Media Conference every summer and highly recommend it.

We got married in the Art Park next to our house on May Day 2013.
