The space

Stay in this private, secluded 450-square foot cottage that features a bedroom, full kitchen and full bathroom. The cottage, nestled in the redwoods, is just outside of the Eureka area in Northern California. Wireless internet has extremely limited data, although area has strong cell service if your phone has unlimited data. Bedroom has a queen bed.

Cottage is best suited for quiet getaways for solo adventurers, although we would be amenable to honeymooners or seasoned couples (since the space is quite cozy). It would also be suitable for parents with a baby who bring their own port-a-crib.

House is situated at the end of a private road that includes only two houses. There is an old logging trail on the property that will take you to a half-mile hike in the forest. We have had a couple guests who found our place to be too secluded and a couple others who found it to be too close to town. We like to think it is the perfect combination! Since we are on a private road, we require guests to drive slowly on it (under 10 mph) to avoid wildlife and children who live on the property.

About 10 minutes to downtown Eureka which features many fine-dining establishments. About 30 to 60 minutes from many state and national parks. It's only a 16-minute drive to Humboldt State University.

Many travelers use our place as a "pit stop" between two faraway places, such as going from San Francisco to Seattle. But for those who are coming for the redwoods, two nights can be woefully inadequate. There are just too many great places to see (Fern Canyon, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Prairie Creek State Park, Patrick's Point State Park, Avenue of the Giants - to name a few). Two-night minimum.

There is limited access to local networks for the TV (no cable or satellite ), but the cottage includes an extensive DVD library that includes every movie ever given the Best Picture Oscar.

Kitchen includes microwave, range, full-size refrigerator, coffee maker, blender, dishes, utensils and cookware.

Cottage includes a washer and dryer.

No smokers and no smoking allowed of any kind on the property or our neighbor's property.

No pets of any kind on the property.

We enjoy checking in guests and being available to answer questions about area attractions and restaurants. After that, we mostly leave you to yourselves unless you send us a text.

It is very quiet. Except for some weekend nights in the summer! An area fairgrounds has stock car racing in the evening hours on some Saturdays in the summer and fall.

You will need your own transportation as we are off the beaten path. Guests with motorcycles: The private road from the main street is mostly gravel. It's about 300 yards to the house on the private road.

Tom and his place were great. My partner and I snuck away to our in-town getaway to get plenty of work done in a beautiful area. Tom was prompt and courteous (even leaving snacks for us) and the location was fantastic. I was concerned about internet service but our Verizon and Sprint phones worked great to hotspot from. It was wonderful having laundry access and a great porch for coffee each morning. Thank you again, Tom!

The Cozy Cabin & Tom lived up to all our expectations and then some! So quiet and tucked away. A great retreat to return to each night!

Perfect little cabin for a couple! It's clean, centrally located between tourist sites (30 min North and 30 min South) and though it's just minutes from town, it feels secluded! Having the washer, dryer and detergent allowed us to travel light, and the bodywash, shampoo, condiments, and snacks were so thoughtful! Tom communicated very well, met us upon arrival and was close-by but out of sight the rest of the stay. I would definitely recommend this cabin.

Tom and Lisa were great hosts and the place was nice. The kitchen was incredibly well outfitted, the place was clean, and there were a lot of extras that made the stay easy. We enjoyed being a bit out of the way and it was only about 5 minutes to get into town. The price was right and we got great value for the price. We would stay here again.

Born and raised in the Detroit area, I made the trek to California in the 1970s. I landed at Humboldt State in 1979 and have never left, falling in love with the redwoods and ocean. My wife Lisa was born and raised in Humboldt County.
