Cottage is best suited for quiet getaways for solo adventurers, although we would be amenable to honeymooners or seasoned couples (since the space is quite cozy). It would also be suitable for parents with a baby who bring their own port-a-crib.
House is situated at the end of a private road that includes only two houses. There is an old logging trail on the property that will take you to a half-mile hike in the forest. We have had a couple guests who found our place to be too secluded and a couple others who found it to be too close to town. We like to think it is the perfect combination! Since we are on a private road, we require guests to drive slowly on it (under 10 mph) to avoid wildlife and children who live on the property.
About 10 minutes to downtown Eureka which features many fine-dining establishments. About 30 to 60 minutes from many state and national parks. It's only a 16-minute drive to Humboldt State University.
Many travelers use our place as a "pit stop" between two faraway places, such as going from San Francisco to Seattle. But for those who are coming for the redwoods, two nights can be woefully inadequate. There are just too many great places to see (Fern Canyon, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Prairie Creek State Park, Patrick's Point State Park, Avenue of the Giants - to name a few). Two-night minimum.
There is limited access to local networks for the TV (no cable or satellite ), but the cottage includes an extensive DVD library that includes every movie ever given the Best Picture Oscar.
Kitchen includes microwave, range, full-size refrigerator, coffee maker, blender, dishes, utensils and cookware.
Cottage includes a washer and dryer.
No smokers and no smoking allowed of any kind on the property or our neighbor's property.
No pets of any kind on the property.
We enjoy checking in guests and being available to answer questions about area attractions and restaurants. After that, we mostly leave you to yourselves unless you send us a text.
It is very quiet. Except for some weekend nights in the summer! An area fairgrounds has stock car racing in the evening hours on some Saturdays in the summer and fall.
You will need your own transportation as we are off the beaten path. Guests with motorcycles: The private road from the main street is mostly gravel. It's about 300 yards to the house on the private road.
- No smokers and no smoking allowed of any kind on the property or our neighbor's property. No pets of any kind on the property.
- Guests have to take a private road to reach the cottage. Please drive less than 10 mph on the private road.
Born and raised in the Detroit area, I made the trek to California in the 1970s. I landed at Humboldt State in 1979 and have never left, falling in love with the redwoods and ocean. My wife Lisa was born and raised in Humboldt County.
