Penlowen (run by myself, a marine biologist and my musician husband) provides affordable eco-friendly holiday accommodation for people who wish to enjoy Cornwall's coastline and gorgeous oldy-worldy village of Polperro.

The space

We value hospitality and personal touches are important to us. The living accommodation is light airy with organic bed sheets, fresh flowers and a locally sourced cream tea on arrival. As we are at the top of the hill, we have wonderful views of the coastline. The accommodation is upside down with the living room, master bedroom with king sized bed, loo and kitchen on the first floor. Through the large patio door in the upstairs living room you can enjoy watching the changes and moods of the water all day long. Downstairs is the shower room and bedroom with two single beds. Penlowen is easily accessible by car with space in our gated courtyard for two cars. This is a rarity in Polperro as many holiday cottages in the village can only offer parking in the car park and not immediately outside the property. The lounge has a bookshelf well stocked with books and things to do and there is a wall hanging wood burner for that extra cosy feel. The TV has SKY and connects to a DVD. WiFi is also available.

Guest access

There is access to a large garden with a dining area and an adventure playground for the under 10s. If you wish, it is just 5 mins walk to the cliff path where you can sit on the bench to enjoy the view before walking another 10 minutes down into Polperro or Talland.

Interaction with guests

As we live next door we are available to answer questions and provide local knowledge. We are also available to chat if visitors would like to learn to speak English more fluently.

Other things to note

Why not indulge in the culinary treats of coastal restaurants such as The View at Whitsand Bay, Fifteen at Watergate Bay or Rick Stein's seafood restaurant in Padstow? or order a selection of local organic produce to be delivered before you arrive? If you fancy indulging yourself, why not book an aromatherapy massage or a facial in advance? We can also offer guided rocky shore activities, as well as access to the music room. If you fancy getting out on the water then there are boat trips from Polperro and watersports and snorkeling in Talland and Looe.

We stayed in Penlowen (Polperro) while our eldest completed a sailing trip based from Plymouth. We originally selected this area so that we were mid-way between Plymouth and the lower portion of Cornwall...without being too remote. We were traveling with a younger child and needed somewhere which could support a self-catering approach but was still *safe* for a youngster with an appetite for adventure (lodging closer to rocky coastlines or wothout adequate railings made us nervous). Penlowen was an ideal location - the small town of Polperro was not to be missed; we found we could travel into Looe quite easily; it was a short drive to Polruan where we could park and take the ferry to Fowey....and we could still hop efficiently onto the motorway for a day trip to Redruth and St. Ives. The lodging was beyond our expectations - neat, tidy, extraordinarily clean, well-stocked, toasty wood burner, fabulous views (on the days which weren't cloudy), comfy beds and clean bedding, warm showers and all the extras that you think you might have left at home (buckets, spades, clothes dryers, corkscrew, beach reads, toddler distractions, toddler dishware and cutlery). We arrived to a plate of fresh scones and jam, clotted cream and fresh milk in the fridge. And quite honestly, there was rarely anything we were missing - Penlowen is that well stocked. Communication before and during our trip was excellent. When we sent messages about where to go for a quick beach trip (URL HIDDEN) Susan responded immediately. The same went for a local garage, required due to a noisy brake pad. (URL HIDDEN) We are sure we will return to this area in the future - we wouldn't think of staying elsewhere.

The view from here is stunning. The walk into Polperro is only 10 minutes, and it really is a beautiful walk, past lovely old cottages with amazing views of the harbour as you go down. The walk back up, although steep, as not as daunting as I thought it would be!

Susan fitted us in a very short notice, and made us feel very welcome; the cream tea on arrival was a lovely surprise! Despite the short notice, the property was immaculately presented and was a perfect, cosy retreat from the Cornish weather! The views are lovely, the location is excellent for exploring the area and the property is really well equipped. I heartily recommend it, and look forward to visiting again :)

Thanks Susan for your lovely hospitality. We loved every minute of our stay. Couldn't have enough of the sunset view from the living room while enjoying the fresh air, the birds singing and all the cute rabbits picking their dinner in the garden. Loved how clean and welcoming the place is. Very well equipped. The costal walk to town in breathless. Good walking shoes are needed ;) We will definitely come back. Thanks for the delicious scones Susan :) S

We had a very enjoyable stay in Susan & Colin's house. It was very comfortable and well equipped with modern appliances and amenities. The sea views and sunsets were amazing especially through the picture windows in the lounge. We had a very warm welcome from Susan and Colin and they couldn't have been more helpful. We thoroughly recommend this house for a wonderful holiday.

I am a biologist and primary school teacher. I volunteer for a local marine group running activities to engage schools and the general public in marine awareness. Living in a coastal village allows me to send time doing what I love, walking the coastline, snorkelling in the sea and sitting in cafes. I live with my husband, a musician and teacher, and my two teenage children.
