My family of 5 (kids are 16, 13, and 11) from the U.S. just returned from the cabin, and we wish we could go back! Jaraboacoa was just gorgeous, and the cabin offered a wonderful place to rest our heads.
Our son is on a medically restricted diet for seizures, so the kitchen was incredibly helpful. It is well-stocked with dishware, silverware, and even spices! The cocoa was delicious!
As other reviewers mention, the description says simple and rustic, but inside, the cabin feels rather modern. It is airy and spacious, and we were very comfortable. The temperature dropped as we traveled from Cabarete to Jarabacoa, and we were very comfortable sleeping without air conditioning (in April).
The surroundings are a bit rustic, so it's good to rent a SUV if you'll be driving yourself. The cabin is just off a paved road, so it can get a little muddy. True to the description, there are roaming farm animals, which add to the ambiance, in my opinion. Yes, the roosters do their thing, but it was fun to experience something different (we live near New York City).
What really made the trip, though, was our contact, Suzanne. She patiently responded to many questions from this naive American who doesn't speak Spanish and had never traveled outside of the U.S. (well, except to Canada before you needed a passport). She connected us with tour guides (David!) who could help us see the countryside like a local, including an amazing hike to a secret waterfall (which we were able to ride down after scaling a path with the guide!) and a horseback ride through the countryside to another waterfall. She also helped us connect with companies to go rafting and paragliding, both of which we highly recommend as well. And she also helped us know what was doable on our own so we didn't always have to hire a guide. We enjoyed exploring waterfalls as a family. Although we ate in a fair amount, Suzanne also helped us identify some restaurants that had food options for my son and were safe for travelers who can't drink the water. (Aroma de la Montana offers spectacular views!)
In short, our three nights there were magical, due in large part to Suzanne. I would book again in a heartbeat! Thank you, Molly-Ann and Suzanne, for opening the cabin to us. We never, ever will forget this adventure. Our family is stronger after experiencing this trip together. I wish you all health and happiness!
P.S. Consider getting a cheap cell phone for the week. We thought (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) would be sufficient, but several of the guides aren't on wifi throughout the day, so it was hard to reach them.
