This is the beach house of times past. A traditional Cape nestled in the dunes with gardens, lawn, and private beach. Watch the sun set over the Bay, enjoy one of the best kite surfing beaches in the East, bike for miles on the rails to trails along the marshes, or simply be. This is a place for families, children, couples and celebrations. It is a place of love and cherished times. It is a place you will always feel young.
This beautiful and private 1800's house has been in the family for over 60 years. It was moved down from New Hampshire to West Falmouth and rebuilt just prior to the 1938 hurricane. It is surrounded and next to over 17 acres of private and conservation dunes assuring an exceptionally intimate setting. IT IS A SEASONAL HOME - NO CENTRAL HEATING!
The Surprise House was so named as it came unexpectedly filled with antiques and of course, being such an old house, it is filled with nooks and crannies.
The main house has a Living Room, formal Dining Room, Kitchen, Pantry/hall and 3 bedrooms. The bedrooms are as follows:
1: Queen and full bath (tub/shower) on first floor.
2: Twin beds on second floor.
3: Another set of twins on second floor with full bath (shower) between rooms.
There is an additional half bath on the first floor.
Across the lawn there is an outbuilding called The 'Fish House' which sleeps from 4 plus. This is typically where children or one family will sleep. The Fish House has:
1: Two sets of bunk beds with a full on the bottom and twin on top. There are two extra single mattresses underneath the bunkbeds. Half bath outside in the barn and two outdoor showers, one enclosed, one open.
The Main House opens through French doors to a beautiful stone patio with flower and herb gardens and giant fish bowl (we don't keep fish in it anymore as the birds kept eating them). The patio boasts a grill and teak furniture to seat 12. This is where family and friends relax, cook, entertain and play games. A stone wall runs along the gardens and lawn for additional sitting. It is as wide as a yoga mat for those so inclined. The lawn is about 40 by 20 feet perfect for croquet, badminton or ball games. Wonderful for family gatherings and intimate parties up to 25 people. Unfortunately, the house cannot accommodate larger parties.
In addition to the Main House and Fish House, there is the 'Barn' which houses adult bikes, kayaks and a sunfish. These are for your use as long as they are fresh water cleaned and returned. Assorted games, beach toys, swim boards and inflatables are also for your use.
The beach beckons. Beach combing, surf riding, creature catching, sand castle making, kayaking, sailing, and long walks down to the 'Point' where you can ride in and out with the tides at the mouth of the Great Sippewissett Marsh. Rest in the hammock at the top of the dunes and listen to the wind whistle. Western sunsets and evening bonfires.
When not beaching it, take a walk, run, bike or skate along the Shining Sea Bike Path which is just down the road. It runs all the way to Falmouth (4 miles) or Woods Hole (8 miles). You can also walk to the local market, cafe, organic ice cream shop or public library along the picturesque West Falmouth Harbor. This is a very special place indeed.
Please be advised: ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING AND NO PETS ON PROPERTY. THIS IS A SEASONAL HOME - NO CENTRAL HEATING.
You will have access to all but the attic. The barn is reserved for much of our toys which you too, will be able to enjoy. These include a kayak, 5 bikes (some are for children), lots of beach toys, skim boards, kick boards, balls, and more.
There is parking for about 5 cars.
Interaction with guests
As all of us owners (it is a family house after all) live out of State, I will always be available via email and text messaging or phone. Occasionally, I am in town and almost always at the beginning and end of your arrival and departure.
Other things to note
Plenty of beach towels.
No smoking. Please pick up all cigarettes should you feel the need to smoke outside.
Check in is from Friday to Friday.
Garbage must be put out Thursday evening for early Friday pickup. There will be an additional fee of $100 if this is not done as we will have to hire someone to come and get it and take it to the transfer station where there is an additional fee. Don't forget!!
We have a barn full of toys with 4+ bikes, kayaks, sunfish, skim and kick boards, balls of all kinds and baskets of beach toys. In addition, there are puzzles, games and Lincoln Logs inside the Living room. Please wash all boats and water toys replacing them where you found them. Leave folding chairs at the base of the dunes. In general, please leave the house as you found it. Beds should be remade and all towels washed and put away. The cleaning crew will come in to clean only. They do not do laundry.
No pets please and no parties larger than 25 people. If there is a need for more guests, please contact us. We are not able to have weddings or huge gatherings as we are not a commercial property. We are a family home and open it to others who might find the same joy as we have and subsequently respect this slice of heaven as we do.
From Sep 15 - Oct 31, 2017 the minimum stay is 3 nights.
I have lived in or visited 34 countries in the world. When I thought about where to live in my later years, I joke that it came down to Istanbul or St. George (a 15 mile peninsula close to Camden); both are on the water, both are beautiful, both are filled with wonderful art, people, and amazing food.
In 2016, I purchased a "village" pad in Camden, a good half hour from my "camp" in St. George. Perhaps it is more appropriate to say "Glamp." I love my camp but the pulse of the mid-coast tends to be in Camden and I find myself there almost daily. I am grateful for a place to hang my hat - closer to friends as well as mountains and Pickleball courts. I am fortunate to be able to share it with others here on airbnb.
I am as well fortunate to share my family's house on Cape Cod, also listed on airbnb. This is a place full of joy that I own with my three brothers and my ex husband. There is not a day that goes by, in season, that one of my children, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends or a family of guests is not enjoying this simple house by the sea. It is a gift.
