Luis was a great host, super helpful throughout whenever we had a question or pointed out when something was happening in Surano (like a religious procession passing through the streets) throughout our stay. His home is centrally located and it’s hidden courtyard entrance gives you the privacy you need despite being in the centre of town. It’s decorated with lots of quirky features, all necessary mod-cons like an aircon or shutters that fully shut out bright morning sun when you want to have your well-deserved vacation lie in. Luis welcomed us with a bowl of fresh fruit, coffee in the kitchen for the next morning, and had some great suggestions for spending the first day of our stay. The apartment boasts 2 roof terraces, one is more equipped than the other, however both with great views to witness a stunning sunrise or sunset over the town and surrounding countryside. Surano itself is a sleepy town where the locals know everyone, people are friendly and trustworthy. It’s off the beaten tourist track so you get a real feel of being in Southern Italy. We also used it as a base to explore the nearby beautiful ports of Otranto and Castro (and the beautiful coastal landscapes between these two).
Do trust Luis on his restaurant recommendations, especially nearby Trattoria La Bersagliera was absolutely wonderful!! It has a beautiful romantic garden where you can enjoy typical Salento cuisine with an unexpected stylish crowd from other parts of the region.
