Fantastic place! The accommodation was in a separate annexe off of the main house at the edge of the pine forest in Carcans-Plage. The room had everything you needed for your stay (I stayed for two weeks), including a fridge, kettle, bathroom and reliable Wi-Fi. It was very clean and tidy. The lovely outdoor spaces consisting of loungers and dining areas were also for your use and a large barbecue and outdoor shower was also available. The host respected your privacy but was always available to answer any questions I had.
The location of the accommodation is excellent - only a few minutes walk from the beach, but on the edge of the village so it was very quiet - just birdsong in the mornings and the faint sound of the sea. The village itself has a (limited) supermarket, several restaurants and cafes, a couple of bars, surf shops, board and bike hire, ice cream shops - everything you need. There are cycle paths close by linking you to Maubuisson, Lacanau Ocean and further afield.
The beach itself is stunning! If surfing or bodyboarding is your thing, there are a few good beach breaks with other surfers around. Lifeguards are present week round during high summer and at weekends at the beginning and end of summer. There are flagged areas where swimming is allowed. During my visit, it looked like the local Bordelais people made very good use of the beach, and it drew large numbers at the weekend, but as the beach is vast it never felt crowded, and the environment was clean and respected.
I flew to Bordeaux airport. It can be quite difficult to get to Carcans Plage by public transport, and taxis can cost 150 euros after 8pm, so it's worth hiring a car - you won't regret it. The area is well signposted and the roads are well maintained with plenty of roundabouts (where local drivers don't signal)! The housing is gated, and there is plenty of parking at the house. There are large supermarkets in Lacanau Ocean (~10km away) and Lacanau Ville. Maubuisson has a beautiful lake (with a swimming area) and beach, Lacanau Ocean is a bigger version of Carcans-Plage, and there are other very scenic lakeside areas with associated watersports. On rainy days, you could head inland to some of the Chateaus.
In summary, I had an amazing time here and I'll definitely be back for another visit!
