Our home is located in a quiet setting, yet close to beaches. We welcome couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids).
"Haversham Home" stretches itself out mostly on one story giving a spacious feeling. It was designed by an architect and built in the late 1960's. Many of the original design elements are retained allowing the original character of the house to be felt. 2 rooms are upstairs; the library, and the cupola bedroom. We have a Finnish wood burning stove in the living room surrounded by a couch to relax on. Our sunroom has sliding doors on 2 sides, one leads out to the main flagstone terrace. Here we have a gas BbQ grill available to use during the warmer months of the year and a dining table with a sun umbrella. A new second flagstone terrace faces west. The kitchen is well equipped with space for several people to work together. The dining table stands under the circular opening to the upstairs library.
Our home is located on a cul-de-sac in a very quiet area of the seaside town of Westerly, Rhode Island. South County Rhode Island has, according to the "South County Tourism Council", 100 miles of coastline. For some suggestions of beaches you might like to visit a good place to start looking is on the Southcountryri online site; go to "what to do"/ "beaches". From our home it is a short drive to many of the area's beautiful beaches. The closest beach to Haversham Home with parking available to the public is "The Dune's Beach" which is less than 2 miles from our home. Further along Atlantic Avenue there are many more beaches with parking open to the public, the biggest being "Misquamicut State Beach". In Watch Hill there is "East Beach" and Napatree Point . Heading east the first public beach you come to is "Charlestown Breachway", next "Blue Shutters Town Beach" in Charlestown, and then Rhode Island's 3 mile long beach at Charlestown: "East Beach".
Guests of Haversham Home can enjoy our yard, the two outdoor decks, main flagstone terrace (now expanded) and new west facing flagstone terrace. During the warm months of the year we have a gas barbeque grill on the terrace and the outside shower is turned on for easy showering after a day at the beach.
Interaction with guests
I live nearby in my home whose property adjoins Haversham Home. I am available to guests if needed.
Other things to note
Our home has a sceptic system. Please do not flush any additional products other than the "natural waste" and toilet paper down the toilet.
Haversham Home has large picture windows and sliding doors to let in the fresh air. Opening the windows in the library cupola and the sliding doors in the sun room, and the sunlight in the kitchen provides for a quick exchange of air in the common rooms. Please remember to close all windows and doors when you leave home so that the house stays dry if it should rain. The overhang of the roof is not wide allowing the rain to come into the house if the windows and doors are not closed.
Each bedroom has a portable fan.
A hair dryer is in each bathroom.
Our kitchen is furnished with the following electrical appliances; refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, oven, stove, microwave, toaster, blender and a 12 cup coffee maker.
Our outdoor space is a few acres on which we continually make small changes. Recently we expanded the main flagstone terrace and added a west facing flagstone terrace.
Upon departure please make sure that you have closed all windows in Haversham Home, turned off all lights, and leave the house key in the lock box. Thank you!
I have a compost bin outside of the house set up for biodegradable items. The bin is easy to find; from the outdoor shower look up at the electric line to the house, follow that, the bin is to the left of the line a few yards from the house.
The Orange Town of Westerly pay per bag garbage bags should only be filled with items that can not go into the compost or into the recycle bins.
The Town of Westerly has a good recycling system so that most items can actually go into the recycling bins rather than the garbage bags; of the usual garbage that one accumulates the only items not allowed to be recycled in Westerly are styrofoam and very soft plastic such as plastic bags. These items must go into the orange paid for "garbage bag".
The Westerly transfer station is located at the following address (about an 8 minute drive from Haversham Home):
