This is the place to stay when you're in Havana! Harold's apartment is spotless and beautiful. The beds are comfy and every bedroom has a private bathroom! It is located very centrally, just a couple of blocks from the Malecon, a grocery store, cute little restaurants that overlook the water, and just across the street from the restaurant that Michelle Obama ate! There is a large hotel (Meliá Cohiba Hotel) a block away that will exchange your money at all hours. You are also a block away from the wifi area, which is beside the store where you buy wifi cards.
Harold and his lovely wife will come and cook breakfast for you in the mornings for just $5 pp. And by breakfast I mean, a giant plate of ripe tropical fruit, buttery toast, fresh eggs (how you want them), ham, and cafe con leche.
The neighborhood (Vedado) is super safe, quiet and very close to central Havana. It's also an up and coming neighborhood in and of itself, with bars, restaurants, and a place called Fabrica del Arte--a fashionable complex of art galleries with bars and places to eat.
The hosts are extremely helpful and will arrange taxis and give good travel tips. We did not do any research and would have had an awful time if it hadn't been for Harold giving us advice on where to go and what to do. So if you're not a planner, stay here! You will be taken care of. If you are a planner, stay here too, because it is a lovely place, centrally located, and a great deal.
-Go to Santa Maria beach instead of Vedado. It's very beautiful and less touristy.
-Eat at Tablazos--very reasonable prices and plentiful food.
-Eat at La Guarida--beautiful restaurant in an old mansion with top notch food. A little expensive, but you have to make a reservation a week or two before.
-Eat at Atelier. It's where Michelle Obama ate!
-Try to do some research beforehand, because internet in Havana is really spotty. We were lucky that we were right beside a wifi park, but it's not common.
-Listen and trust your host--at least trust Harold. They will look out for you and give you the hook up.
All in all this was an amazing trip and this apartment had a lot to do with it.
