River Run Cabin is "unplugged" freeing you to tune in to the river’s social network! - - dragonflies circling at noon, beavers at dusk, a heron fishing at daybreak.

Absolutely No Electricity + No Plumbing, but this charming cabin meets your needs from breakfast to bedtime.

It’s a special little property just off the Haliburton County Rail Trail, part of the Toronto to Algonquin Greenway. Bring your kayak and/or fatbike.

This is a summer-only rental - inquire now for 2018.

The space

The kitchen has all dishes, utensils, pots and pans. Cooking here takes you back to simpler times. Instead of a fridge, there is a cooler. Bring a bag of ice! There's a perfectly functional campstove, but experiment with cooking on the outdoor fireplace. Potatoes and corn-on-the-cob can be baking in the coals while your steak or veggie burgers are grilling on top. Enjoy your feast at the solid cedar picnic table at the river's edge.

Instead of a conventional washroom, there is a classic outhouse! Bathing is accommodated with a jug and wash basin in a private closet in the cabin. There's a public swimming hole just down the road. (the river in front of cabin is too shallow for swimming)

There is no heating source inside. You can warm up by the campfire outside. Cozy comforters and blankets are provided. Two bedrooms are off the living room with curtains for doors. The table inside the cabin is ideal for games. There are many places to hang out around the property. The screened porch is heavenly. The hammock is comfy. A campfire pit is wide open to the night sky. There are a few other special places to sit and watch the river run.

Guest access

You will have the whole property to yourselves. It’s about an acre but seems larger because there are so many different nooks, hideaways and lookouts. It feels very private. Access is down a long lane that's a right-of-way across an old farm.

Interaction with guests

We will welcome you and provide an orientation. Since there's no Wi-Fi or cell signal at the cabin, we'll make arrangements in case you need to reach us.

Other things to note

If you're an experienced camper, this will seem like the Ritz. You don't need to bring any gear. If you've never been without electricity or plumbing, we're happy to discuss your specific concerns.

Great private place to escape. September nights can be cold though! On the plus side no bugs. Pamela was super welcoming. The cabin was very clean and the property is nice and private. Would definitely go back :)

Cozy cabin by the river. It was just as advertised, and the small touches, like lanterns and a full water jug were appreciated! It rained while we were there but the screened in porch is so beautiful with the view of the river. Would highly recommend for those looking for some peace and quiet! We didn't meet the hosts but they communicated throughout and they stay was well planned.

We stayed at the cosy cabin for two weeks and even though there is no electricity and running water everything in and around the cabin is conveniently arranged to be able to cook, make BBQ outside, to do the dishes etc. There are various hiking trails around that guarantee fun day trips. Pamela was a reliable host and cared for everything. We were happy to have brought our sleeping bags, some nights were very cold. There are sheets and blankets in the cabin though.

Response from Pamela:
Thank you for the warm compliments Cony and Jasch. It was a pleasure hosting you. *A note to upcoming visitors - we don't usually provide sheets at this cabin, but since Cony and Jasch were coming from outside the country, we were happy to offer this.

I booked the River Run cabin for myself and two children (9 and 13) to stay for four nights. We usually camp so the cabin was a real treat for us. We enjoyed the screened in porch area to play card games, the hammock for reading in and listening to the birds in the morning. It is a very quiet and relaxing cabin but close enough to Minden and Halliburton if you want to go into "town". Pamela was very friendly and has lots of information regarding the area and the bike trail systems. Thanks Pamela, we will be back!

Response from Pamela:
Thanks Sara, You are the first guests to bring bikes! Our proximity to the rail trail, and my passion for welcoming cyclists to the area, prompted us to share our River Run Cabin on Airbnb. I hope you'll recommend us to your bike trail riding friends.

This cozy cabin was the perfect spot for our honeymoon. We had an amazing week off the grid and spent lots of time on the river in our canoe and in the lovely hammock on the property. We had an amazing time exploring different spots around the Halliburton County and the rail trail nearby. Pamela was an enthusiastic and thoughtful host! Highly recommend this destination!

Pamela accommodated for a late check-in as we were arriving from Toronto. The cabin was well stocked with everything one would need and is very secluded. Minden is very close by for access to grocery stores, restaurants, etc. The cabin was very clean and hosts were easy to communicate with.

Response from Pamela:
Thanks for your note, Justine. I think you wrapped it up quite well - in that, River Run Cabin lets you feel very secluded while being just minutes from amenities!

We spent three days at Pamela's Off Grid Cottage and it was a wonderful experience. Pamela met us on the road and helped escort us to the cottage and gave us a tour of the cottage and property. We were pleasantly surprised that Pamela had thought to provide us extra water, lanterns, matches, toilet paper, paper towel, soap, a coal man stove-the list goes on! We enjoyed the sunny mornings with the hammock, the water hole and the fire pit in the evenings. The covered porch at the back was amazing at night against those pesky bugs. I'd come back again for even longer! It's so nice to be 'off-grid'! The trail was within walking distance and the town of Minden was about a ten minute drive away. Thanks Pamela for your hospitality and opening up your place to us and making us feel extremely welcome.

My husband Hugh and I welcome you! We moved with our young family to Haliburton County 20+ years ago to find a quieter life. Here we have found expression in being part of a lively arts and music community, surrounded by nature. Hugh plays trumpet and cornet in every kind of …
