About this listing

2 fully self-contained two-bedroom cottages suitable for 2 couples or a small family on small organic alpaca farm surrounded by bush & Ringarooma River-great for trout fishing! 1hr to coast & golf courses. 8mins to Blue Derby mountain bike trails.

The space

Our eco-retreat is registered as "Land for Wildlife". All aspects of creating Tin Dragon Trail Cottages have adopted principles of ecological sustainability with the objectives of providing a comfortable eco retreat. We produce our own electricity from a micro-hydro scheme, rain water is harvested for the cottages and we use an enviro-cycle system to treat waste water. Our farm has a herd of alpacas, organic vegetable garden & fruit orchard, free range chooks (Australian for “chickens”) and a very friendly, but “failed” sheep dog called Rusty.

Tin Dragon Trail Cottages’ two-bedroom cottages called Ah Ping (1 queen & 2 king single beds) and Ah Moy (2 queen beds), accommodate two couples or a family of four. Ah Moy (two-bedroom) cottages has disabled access. Each cottage has a full kitchen, clothes washing machine, bathroom and outside private BBQ facility. Tariff includes fresh breakfast ingredients supplied for the first day. Linen is supplied and refreshed upon request. Dinner and BBQ ingredients or picnic basket can be supplied, by arrangement. 4G wireless is available for Telstra & Optus mobiles. Our property does not have access to fast broadband internet and therefore cannot provide WiFi.

Guest access

You are welcome to share the produce from our organic vegetable garden, fruit orchard and hens and to mingle with our alpacas. You can view the Chinese mining history interpretation in our Settlers hut, take the short-circuit walk through the Ah Ping alluvial mine site, or the longer Guiding Star Creek circuit walk which takes you along the Ringarooma River and Guiding Star Creek into the Briseis water race before returning to the Settler’s hut. You are welcome to share our library of books and DVDs which includes natural and cultural history titles and Australian films. For most of the year you can fish for trout in the Ringarooma River just outside your cottage.

Interaction with guests

We are happy to spend time with our guests describing the aspects of our sustainable farm and the local Chinese history and to assist guests with planning their exploration of our region. On occasions we have shared meals with our guests. If guests wish to be totally private, that's OK too.

Other things to note

Please let us know if you are running late so that we know you are safe (not lost!) and so we can have your cottage ready for you. It would be terrific if you could drop in to our reception office when you are leaving! We do like to meet our guests and receive feedback.

Christine, Graham and James made us very welcome and, when we arrived late on Sunday evening, we really appreciated the supplies that they had left for us. The cottage was very well equipped and we enjoyed the beautiful and peaceful setting, the alpacas, chickens and the fleeting glimpses of the platypus. Mostly we were delighted to have hosts who knew so much about their area and who were so willing to share their knowledge with us.

Lovely cottage in a quiet and pretty spot, backing onto the Ringarooma river. Very well equipped, and items for cokked breakfast provided. Chatty and friendly hosts.

My partner and I loved our stay at the Tin Dragon Trail Cottages. Graham and Christine were very gracious hosts. We loved the place as we got to experience eco friendly sustainable living at its best. The alpacas, the free range chickens and home harvested honey were some of the highlights of our stay. The cottages were well furnished and equipped. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the cottage.

We enjoyed 4 days in March 2014 in the 2 bedroom cottage at Tin Dragon. It was well-appointed for our family of 4 adults and a 2-year-old. The toddler particularly enjoyed meeting the alpacas and chickens. Graham and Christine were friendly and helpful. The location was very quiet and secluded, but a good base from which to explore north-eastern Tas.

Graham and Christine are passionate about living sustainably in Tasmania.

Falling in love with this lush green valley and its clear-flowing river we purchased a 36 Ac farm in 2001 and set about building the five brick and stone cottages which now sit looking out over the Ringarooma River. The former degraded cow paddock has been transformed to give each cottage its own private native garden with outdoor bar-be-que setting.

We are keen to learn about sustainable living, and very happy to share our experiences with our guests. More often than not our gardening efforts benefit the possums more than the human inhabitants; but we persist!

Rain is harvested to supply clean chemical-free water and a micro-hydro powers the cottages. Waste water is recycled back onto the farm. Guests are encouraged to collect eggs, pick vegetables and fruit from our organic garden and catch trout for the BBQ. In summer the river is ideal for a refreshing swim!
