Peace and Coconuts

The space

Welcome to real Sri Lankan life: close to nature, close to amazing surf breaks and soon to be close to your heart!

Nestled down a winding country road in sunny Uruvitiya village, this lovely farmhouse is within 10 minutes of excellent surf breaks and great restaurants at nearby Marissa and Weligama beaches. Look out your windows past your coconut, mango, papaya, ambarella and avocado trees, over your own rice paddy-- all organic and available for your use-- to the hills of the adjoining cinnamon-tree plantation. Take a deep breath of tropical air and relax.

The house itself was recently built on the family plot and was designed to be cooled by the natural breezes of the tranquil, verdant valley it rests in. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a small private balcony that affords views of the beautiful tropical surroundings, and off the upstairs sitting room is a larger balcony that looks out over the rice paddies-- a great place for bird watching, beers or both. Old and new are here together: the rustic country kitchen retains a traditional Sri Lankan wood-fired cooking hearth, while you'll enjoy these modern conveniences:

- DSL wifi
- desktop pc
- large flatscreen TV with 45 English-language satellite channels
- washing machine
- hot-water shower
- landline
- hair dryer
- clothes iron
- freshly washed towels and locally hand-loomed linens

Perhaps the best part of the stay is the personal guidance the owner/caretaker provides-- Hetti, a multilingual retired international sailor, will discretely stay at night in one of the extra downstairs bedrooms, available to help you with whatever you might need. Should you need guidance to the many nearby attractions, just ask-- his help in this regard is included in your booking fee!

We look forward to helping you have an incredible vacation! Please let us know if we can answer any questions for you or otherwise help in any way.

Guest access

As guests, you have the entire house, including the organic mango, papaya, ambarella, avocado, coconut and king coconut trees around the house.

Hetti and/or Malika will discreetly stay in the extra downstairs bedrooms in order to help you with anything you might need while assuring your privacy.

Interaction with guests

I live nearby and I'm available via Internet or phone every day. Your local contact, Hetti, will also assist you.

Other things to note

Dr. Malika draws upon a lifetime of work to offer a full range of Ayurvedic treatments, from illness diagnosis and treatment to traditional massage.

Sri Lankan cuisine is an incredible fusion of Indian complexity with tropical ingredients and Asian influences. One of the pleasures of a stay at the villa is the option of enjoying organic farm-to-table meals using homegrown rice, fresh ingredients grown by nearby farmers in the village, and seafood sourced from local fishermen. Dr. Malika is available for personal chef services including from one to three meals per day and is happy to accommodate any dietary preferences you might have. Much of this is traditionally cooked over a fire. Choose from Sri Lankan, Indian, and Western fare-- and as an Ayurvedic doctor, she can provide healing meals from that tradition as well.

Services are offered for a very modest additional charge, price upon request. Please book in advance of your arrival.

House Rules

First of all, have an awesome time!

Check-in and check-out times are "flexible" depending on your ideal times, those of other guests, and our work schedule. I'll make every effort to make things convenient for you, and Hetti can almost always break away to meet you. Reference times: check-out 11am; check-in 1pm (cleaning/laundry in between, during which time I can usually store your bags for you). Again, I'll try to shift these for your convenience if at all possible, and often I can.

Should fruits, coconuts, etc. be in season, you are responsible for picking them yourself.

The cleaning fee covers only moderate use of sheets and towels, and not anything that makes them unpresentable for future guests. Please leave the house more or less as you found it or be prepared to have some of your deposit directed toward cleanup. Any deductions from your deposit will be made at my sole discretion. I really believe I'm generous about this and so far I've never had to charge anyone, so don't worry about it, please just use common sense-- this is Hetti and Malika's home.

Please lock the house and turn off fans when you leave.

Any use of the house, appliances, etc. is undertaken at your own risk.

Please be sure to read the listing fully before you come. This is a nice place but it is Sri Lankan, not Western, and some things are simpler than in the West; particulary, please be aware that the 1/2 bath and the kitchen are pretty rustic, and the shower is the only appliance with hot water. It's the tropics, though-- you're unlikely to need more, and we've had no complaints. :)

Additional services like a personal chef or Ayurvedic treatments are dependent on availability and advance booking; please let us know well in advance of your visit if you'd like these.

Again, most of all: have fun! It's a HOUSE RULE!

A group of six stayed at the farmhouse and we absolutely enjoyed our stay. The house was spacious and kept clean. We enjoyed traditional breakfasts each morning for a small fee. Hetti was a great person as well as a resource to help us make arrangements during our stay. Hetti was friendly and really watched out for us. He took us to some places we would have not known about. He also checked in with us even when we left. Tim was also helpful setting up rides and making sure all was ready when we arrived. We also had an unplanned dinner with Tim and enjoyed talking with him as well. I would recommend this house. We would for sure stay again.

Actually it was not Tim that met us and the house is a little far from beach. Furthermore, there is no air condition so it is a little hot.

Hetti was an extraordinary host who helped us with tours and cooked breakfast everyday. We appreciated his knowledge of the area as our own tour guide was useless. His name is Amila if anyone comes across him. Great stay. Would recommend.

Tim was helpful and very energetic in booking our family's stay at Hetti's farm house. We had an overall great experience at the farmhouse: the view of the rice paddies and village in the back yard was breathtaking. Hetti was helpful in organising our safari to Yala, and tuk-tuk rides from his friend Renki (one of the nicest people we met in Sri Lanka). Mirrissa Beach is a quick ride. It is a beautiful beach! The batik factory up the road from Hetti's is also a must see. The breakfasts Hetti made were good, but he served too much food and would make breakfast for us without asking. Two mornings we did not want to eat, but we had to because he made us food (we also had to pay for it!). The drawback of the farm house was that the bathroom was FILTHY. The shower had thick black mold everywhere, and the drain was covered in a thick layer of grime. It was disgusting! My family wondered if the shower had ever been cleaned. Thank goodness we have stayed in some grimy campgrounds in New Hampshire, USA, as kids, or else we would have left! Hetti also charged us more money for the safari than he said he would via email before we arrived in Sri Lanka. The price we paid for a half day safari was MORE than the price you would pay if you booked through Yala's website. Hettie said he could get a cheaper deal, but he didn't. He also brought us to an expensive restaurant after the safari when we didn't want to go there. He left and ate at a cheap place next door. Strange. Hetti's wife does not live at the farm- she lives in Colombo with their kids/grandson. Also, the fruit trees that were in season were unable to be picked (coconuts) b/c Hetti could not get them out of the trees anymore (he is "too old", to quote him). He kept promising that a local would harvest some, but he never got anyone. We really wanted fresh fruit! Overall, the view was spectacular and the experience of living in real Sri Lanka for 5 days was something we'll never forget, but the description of the "farmhouse" is inaccurate. ADVICE: Be upfront with Hetti from the beginning about how much money you want to spend (he will keep taking you places where you have to shell out money and he will expect and TELL you to tip everyone but will never give you a clear answer as to what the appropriate amount of tipping is), and do not expect a clean shower. Bring flip-flops/slippers and DO NOT touch the shower curtain. YUCK! Do expect a great view, not having to organise a safari, and going to the best beach around- Mirissa beach!

Probably the highlight of my Sri Lankan experience. EDon't be deterred by not being by the beach.. You'll find that after a day by the beach you can wait to get back and enjoy the bliss of peacefulness - surrounded by the rice party fields. By far the best part was getting to spend time with Hetti and his beautiful wife Malika (who can turn it on in the kitchen for a real great value rate) who always went out of their way to make sure I felt at home and organised anything I wanted to do. If you want an authentic tranquill Sri Lankan experience yet be only a short tuk tuk drove away from the beach.. This is your place to stay. Tim who manages the property was exceptional in all communication! Hopefully one day come back!

If you want to experience the real Sri Lanka this is for you. Hetti, the owner (Tim is an agent), also lives in the house. Because we has not understood that we were a bit pit off at first. However, this turned out to be among the best experiences of our 6 month trip. Hetti became a good friend and acted as our guide and liaison. We went to places we would have never found as a tourist. He arranged drivers and took is to markets. We saw elephants and a leopard on the wild went to An amazing batik factory, an Aruyvedic snake farm, local beaches and he even took a three day trip with us to the mountains. The house is lovely, set in a rural village with great views of rice paddies where you can watch peacocks and village life. Hetti cooked traditional Sri Lankan breakfasts for us whic h were delicious. The kitchen is "rustic" but usable. This is not the place for you if you do not stray from tourist trail hotels. But if you want to really experience the country you should book it.

In my personal life outside of Airbnb, I'm a yoga teacher, a surfer, and a world traveller who loves to try new foods. Because I travel so much myself, I know how important it is to stay in a beautiful place and be helped by great people in a warm, fair and timely manner. I look …
