(See Note below.) Private room+bath in the Boylan Heights historic district, easy 15-minute walk downtown, good restaurants/cafes, museums, galleries, new YMCA, Amtrak, public transport and NCSU campus. Laundry, TV, WiFi, newspapers, kitchen,...

The space

***Note*** until the City of Raleigh decides to allow renting for less time than a month, that will have to be my minimum stay at $420 (+ $120 for a 2nd person). Hope to be able to remove this notice soon. ~{8-)>

This private room+bath is in our soon-to-be 100-year old home in the Boylan Heights historic district. It's an easy 15-minute walk to downtown Raleigh, public transportation and the NCSU campus. There's a free circulator bus that goes around downtown and a similar bus at NCSU. We're also a few blocks from the Amtrak train station. It's a 20-minute drive from the airport to our home. There are many great restaurants in the nearby Morgan St., Glenwood South (which has a Zipcar site), and Warehouse District and in downtown plus our neighborhood Boylan Brewpub (currently closed for repairs) just a few blocks away with an outdoor deck and view of downtown Raleigh. There's a large shared HDTV with 15-20 channels, plus wifi and laundry on 2nd floor. Do-it-yourself breakfast (juice, good granola/yogurt, eggs, toast or bread, jams, etc.) and coffee and tea are available.

The cluttered main floor guestroom has small desk, double sleeper sofa, attached private bath, and shared closet. Includes utilities, main floor common rooms, laundry and kitchen privileges. Parking on street or off alley; city bus-line stops 2 blocks away. Guests OK but no smoking except outside, please. I'm a former NCSU math instructor (widower, semi-retired) and my lady friend, who shares the house with me, is an NCSU nurse. We look forward to welcoming you.

Guest access

Laundry, TV, WiFi, newspapers, kitchen, downstairs living space... I try to maintain a relaxed and casual atmosphere which may not suit the hyper-fastidious.

Interaction with guests

I'm used to sharing the kitchen, living spaces and upstairs laundry. The weather's usually nice, and there are good cafes nearby. Also nearby is a very good (old $$, new bldg) YMCA with monthly rates scaled to income and, of course, our art, history and science museums and galleries.

Other things to note

After a recent guest, I should mention my allergy to perfumes, colognes, hairspray, etc., and so prefer people not to use them, except perhaps in the downstairs bathroom with the door shut and exhaust fan running, thanks.

After another recent guest, please note under House Rules "Food storage and preparation, eating and garbage disposal should only be in the kitchen/dining area." Old houses in the South must deal with "water bugs" which are endemic in warm weather. Keeping food in the kitchen/dining area helps.

No smoking
Not suitable for pets

Guests OK but no smoking except outside, please, and no spray cologne, deodorant, or hair products, as I'm very allergic to them.

I've found, from experience, a $100 house key deposit required, since re-keying alone costs ~$200.

Food storage and preparation, eating and garbage disposal should only be in the kitchen/dining area. Most especially, do not put cold drinks on wooden furniture damaging the finish.

I ask folks to park in the rear to ease any parking crunches on the street.

Marsh is a very friendly and helpful host. The place is in a good location and has the charm of an old southern house. However it is a little on the messy side, as might be noted from the photos.

I spent three months at Marsh's place and was overall satisfied with my stay. Marsh is very accommodating and easy to talk to. The location is good. I would recommend one of the bedrooms upstairs rather than the one downstairs though, if available.

Response from Marsh:
Thanks Alex, but I should remind everyone that my posting requests no food in the room -- kitchen and dining area only. Old houses in the South must deal with "water buds" which are endemic.

Marsh was absolutely incredible to stay with! Not only is his location convenient to stay at (fifteen minute walk from the downtown), he picked us up from the airport and even offered to drive us back when we left. He is incredibly accommodating and friendly and I'd recommend this place 100% if you need a place to stay downtown!

Loved the short walk to downtown and the proximity to NC State, restaurants, bars etc! The house is clean, a little cluttered, and the room is small but manageable. The private bathroom is a major plus. The futon can be a little uncomfortable so I recommend bringing an additional foam cushion if you're planning to stay for long. I was surprised that Marsh always offered his food and we often traded things we bought or made!
