Thank you for the comments. Perhaps, these are the things that you are not used to in New York City. My apartment is actually considered large for a studio comparing to many others’ in Manhattan. Unless you stay in the outskirts of the city, you will find the size of apartments here is a lot smaller than other places, such as Boston.
The water is supplied by the city, there shouldn’t be “bacteria”, I mean, bacteria is everywhere theoretically, but I assume that you are saying it’s filthy. It is not. The discoloration you might have seen is probably from the pipes that have been put in the ground decades ago. If you haven’t run the water for a while, the rusty color will show, (which I haven’t experienced), as soon as you let it run for a few minutes, it should resolve it. I am glad that you didn’t go outside to take a bath.
