Riverstone is situated on a semi rural lifestyle block on the banks of the Taramakau River, halfway between Greymouth and Hokitika, with a stunning view of the river and historic rail bridge.
You would be the only guests staying on the property and will have your own private entrance, lounge/dining area, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, laundry and outdoor area. We live in a completely separate and blocked off area of the house, and there are no shared spaces.
The space
With over 100 years of history, this beautifully restored home was once a country hotel known as The Tramway Tavern, welcoming travellers since the late 1800s. After extensive renovations in 2006 and again in 2018, it has been transformed into the comfortable, spacious accommodation you see today.
The house features five bedrooms, all with top of the line beds, quality cotton sheets, French flax linen duvets, feather and down duvet inners, and luxurious pillows.
There are no ensuite bathrooms. Guests share a bathroom block with three high pressure showers and unlimited hot water, a toilet off the bedroom wing, plus three additional toilets off the lounge.
A large chef’s kitchen is ideal for groups, offering a freestanding five hob induction oven, generous bench space, ample storage, and all essential cookware.
The former restaurant is now a spacious open plan lounge and dining area that opens onto a massive deck overlooking the Taramakau River. The deck includes a BBQ with gas provided and plenty of outdoor seating.
The house is fully insulated and double glazed, keeping it warm in winter, cool in summer, and surprisingly quiet. Heat pumps provide heating and cooling throughout, with additional heaters in each bedroom during winter.
Ideally located for exploring the West Coast, with easy access to Lake Brunner, the Great Coast Road, Punakaiki and Pancake Rocks to the north, and Hokitika Gorge, Lake Mahinapua, Franz Josef Glacier, and Fox Glacier to the south.

Other things to note
PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING
• We permanently live on the property under the same roof, however all guest areas are completely separate and private. There are no shared spaces, and you will be the only guests staying on site.
• While my young children and I are very mindful to respect your privacy and keep noise to a minimum, kids will be kids. You may hear us from time to time and see us outdoors. If complete silence is essential for your stay, this property may not be the right fit.
• We have two very friendly ragdoll cats who are allowed outdoors and will likely pop over to say hello. Please do not feed them or let them into the guest area. If you are uncomfortable around cats or do not like them, this property may not be suitable for you.
• Basic cooking essentials are provided, including vegetable oil, salt, pepper, vinegars, soy sauce, herbs and spices, food wrap, baking paper, and tin foil.
We also provide continental breakfast supplies for you to help yourself to, including cereals, homemade bread, spreads, tea, instant and plunger coffee, milk, seasonal fruit, and free range eggs from our chickens when available. Please note that these provisions are not served by us or restocked during your stay.
• The single beds in bedrooms two and three are trundler beds, suitable for children and young teens only. These are not permanently set up, so please let us know your group configuration if you would like them made up.
• The base rate is for four guests. Depending on your group size and configuration, some bedrooms may be locked to keep the house affordable for smaller groups. For example, if you are two couples and one single, three bedrooms will be set up rather than all five.
• There is a small step down from the bathroom block to the bedroom hallway, and a small step up into bedrooms one and two.
• Please note the house is not located in a town. We are on a semi rural lifestyle block halfway between Greymouth and Hokitika. We recommend checking the location on an online map if you are unsure.
• There are no ensuites. The house has one large bathroom block with three separate and private showers off the bedroom hallway, plus four toilets throughout the house.
• The West Coast is rainforest country, so sandflies and mosquitoes are part of life here. Please bring your preferred insect repellent and keep windows shut at night.
• The property is not fully fenced, so young children will need to be supervised while outdoors.
• Occasionally trucks may cart gravel from the riverbed past the property, starting no earlier than 7.30am.
