We had an amazing long weekend at Alexandre's home near the Mercantour forest. We were met by Marie-Jeanne, who was very warm and welcoming. She gave us great advice on hiking and restaurants, as well as lots of information about the plants and animals of the region. Alexandre was great at communication and very quick to respond to all my questions. The location itself is amazing. It's a small, but very comfortable, house, perched on the side of a mountain. There is a spacious deck with an amazing view of the mountains, where you can eat breakfast and dinner. The kitchen is lovely and well-equipped. We ate most of our meals there, as we hiked most days in the Mercantour forest. The TV works well, but there is no internet. However, we had no problem with cell phone coverage for our smartphones. The double bed is a click-clack canape-lit in the living room, but it was very comfortable and we slept incredibly well there. Plus, the living room is surrounded on two sides by windows (that you can close with automatic shutters at night) so it really feels like you are sleeping perched on top of a mountain. I would recommend this rental for a couple (also there is a very comfortable single bed upstairs in the loft, so it could also really work for two friends traveling together, or a couple with one child) who wanted to enjoy the hikes from Boreon, la Gordolasque, or la Fenetre de Madonna. The rental is also close to the lovely towns of Belvedere and St. Martin en Vesubie. We rented a car and it's about one hour from Nice Airport (though the drive is quite curvy, with narrow mountain roads, so you would want to like that sort of thing). But, if you love quiet, nature, and the mountains, this is an amazing vacation getaway!
