Sleeping 8-10 guests, Tigharry Schoolhouse is located on the west side of North Uist in the magical Outer Hebrides. Surrounded by fields, the house overlooks Clettraval hill and Loch Eubhal and is a 15 minute walk to the renowned RSPB reserve at Balranald and the beautiful Hosta beach. The location is very convenient for exploring the very best of the Western Isles; wonderful walks, wildlife and beaches are on the doorstep, while easy day trips via ferry can be made to Harris/Lewis & Barra.

The space

Built in the late 1800s as the local school, the house has been sensitively restored to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation for 8 - 10 guests.

There are two very large double-height living spaces formed from the old schoolrooms: a kitchen-dining room with seating for 10, wood burning stove, floor to ceiling bookshelves and fully fitted kitchen (induction hob and two ovens); and a bright living room with triple aspect windows, another wood burner, comfortable seating on three large sofas, television, a desk/study area and a piano. There is also a new utility room with its own outside access which houses laundry facilities and additional kitchen facilities. This part of the house has a newly installed polished concrete floors and underfloor heating.

The cottage part of the property (formerly the schoolteacher’s lodgings) houses all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Cosy and more traditional in style, it has whitewashed wooden floors and sleeping accommodation for eight people across four bedrooms. Three doubles (one with ensuite bathroom, one with ensuite shower room), plus an additional bedroom with two single beds (and an ensuite shower room). There is also a family bathroom with a freestanding tub, plus an additional guest cloakroom. (Please note an additional 2 beds can be set up if required - please contact us to discuss).

The schoolhouse sits in its own grounds which are surrounded by an old stone wall and comprise the garden immediately around the building, and an adjacent paddock. There is ample outdoor seating in the back garden (table and seating for eight) plus a bbq for guests’ use.

From the paddock there is gate access to the fields behind the house through which a ten minute walk will bring you to the shore. This part of Uist has a wonderful sandy coastline and is perfect for catching amazing wide-sky sunsets. On clear days there are views out to St Kilda and the Monach islands.

Our home is set up to be family friendly and is ideal for groups large or small. There is wifi throughout the property, plus board games, several hundred books, outdoor games (football, cricket, kite) which guests are free to use, as well as OS maps and local walking guides. During the season it is possible to fish in Loch Eubhal (directly opposite the house) and there are many other opportunities for outdoor pursuits locally, including surfing, kayaking, cycling, angling, shooting, birdwatching and boat trips to the Monach Isles and the world heritage site of St Kilda.

It's also worth noting that that the Outer Hebrides are a year-round destination. While the wildflowers of the spring and long evenings of the summer provide for a wonderful holiday experience, clear skies are as likely in January as in June! Opportunities for walks and wildlife continue through the winter; the pub remains open for a winter tipple; you have the beach all to yourselves; and if you’re lucky, you’ll get views from the north of the island to the snow capped peaks of Harris or to experience the elusive northern lights. As a case in point, all the photos of the house and the surrounding area were taken between January and mid-March.

What a fantastic house! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. A beautiful light filled airy interior with great attention to detail, our hosts left a fantastic "house manual" with literally everything you could want to or need to know about the house and the island itself. A lovely nest heating system which keeps the whole house at just the perfect temperature and a fabulous sonos system to fill the rooms with your favourite music using the supplied I pad. Everything you would need and loads more.My highlight was actually the bed! It was the most comfortable one I've ever slept in and was just the icing on the cake for a perfect stay. Can't recommend this place enough, will definitely be returning

This is a stunning house with luminous interiors - quite unexpected in this island environment . Our party of six adults were extremely comfortable and impressed with all the attention given to design details throughout the house - for some the sonos music system, for me having real linen sheets was the icing on the cake! Great kitchen dining space amidst a vast library of books - warm large spaces - every window captures a picture. Great place to stay - highly recommend a stay here.

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house. It felt like a five star hotel! The neighborhood is perfect for walking with some beautiful beaches nearby. Getting the detailed instructions a couple of months before, helped to prepare our journey. Pierson was a very helpful host, replying immediately to our requests.

Just home from The Schoolhouse, which gave us the best family holiday we could have hoped for! With ages ranging from 7 to 50-something, we weren't sure if all 6 of us would really enjoy North Uist, but we had nothing to worry about! The accommodation was so beautiful in every respect that we all loved it. The house is beautifully appointed with everything you could wish for - from Netflix to gorgeous toiletries to spectacular views from every window. Attention to detail is extraordinary, really - beach towels and thermos flasks provided, hundreds of books to browse and read from the miles of bookshelves, one of the best equipped kitchens I've ever experienced....I could go on and on.. One of the most useful and fascinating extras provided by Pierson was the guide to North Uist - pages and pages of info on the islands, from location of shops and petrol stations, to full details of suggested days out, complete with timings (important when you're working around ferry trips!). Pierson was a great host, communication with him was easy and his responses quick, and he is really invested in ensuring his guests enjoy their stay. We could not have asked for more and we could not have loved The Schoolhouse more. We will go back next year. I guess that's the ultimate reflection of what we thought of it - and of North Uist.

This air bnb is a fabulous place to stay. Super comfortable, so well equipped and just a lovely space to spend some time in. This was my first air bnb booking and I was very impressed. We all knew North Uist already as our dad was born near Bayhead and we still lots of cousins on North Uist, Benbecula and Berneray, but we had never really visited this bit of North Uist before. Very close to lots of lovely beaches and super views from every window. Tigharry Schoolhouse is even better than it looks in the pictures.
