The space

OPAL is in the heart of a rural part of Ireland, a small village called Donamon, which is approximately 14km outside of Roscommon Town. This makes it a great location for a peaceful and relaxed stay, whilst enabling guests easy access to the town centre. We are also a short drive from a number of great places to visit. Surrounded by countryside and scenic views, the area is steeped in history. Donamon Castle (only a short walk from OPAL) is one of the oldest inhabited castles in Europe, built in the 12th century and now home to the Divine Word Mission. You are welcome to wander around the grounds free of charge. The River Suck is also located nearby and is a great place to picnic or go fishing.

Guest access

For this reason there are no TV's, radios etc. You have use of all of the facilities including a comfortable relaxation lounge area, kitchenette with microwave oven, fridge, toaster & kettle and dining area. There is a wide selection of self-help, well-being and motivational books available from our library.

This accommodation is let on a 'self catering' basis. You are welcome to use all of the facilities and we ask that you place any rubbish in the bins provided (recycling & general waste). This is a beautiful area and you can have authentic Irish experiences. Ray and Bob, however, in the weeks I visited, were not at all interested in showing the typical Irish warmth and helpfulness. For instance, the internet connection is very spotty. When we would knock on the door to let him know the wifi was down (at 8pm) they got angry for the interruption. When Ray did communicate with us, it was only to tell one of his favorite stories about how stupid people are. I am accustomed to Airbnb hosts being more open to people. Maybe it was a rough time for them.

Response from Ray:
This review is untrue and reflects Laurens inappropriate behaviour. I think Lauren is using this review as a way of 'getting her own back' as I needed to ask AirBNB to intervene die to Laurens behaviour. I was available a number of times every day and another one of us was on site in the centre most of the time (9am - 9pm). Despite this she insisted on calling at my home early (7.30am) and in the evenings most days. Laurens behaviour was erratic and increasingly verbally aggressive towards me, my partner and others staying at our holistic centre. Despite repeatedly trying to resolve this, I had to contact AirBNB who mediated in my favour and ended Laurens stay.

This space is very special and unique, and very accomodating to the traveling guest! The shared space is welcoming, as is Ray. He was a great person to chat with and the work they are doing in this area is really beautiful. I definitely recommend staying here, or doing a work-trade which they offer as well! How wonderful!

I had an excellent stay at Ray's retreat. The place is very calm and perfectly suited for a good night's rest. I especially liked the openness and the inspiring conversation in the morning which came as a bonus. Perfect value for the money.

I live with my partner in a rural part of Ireland (Donamon near Roscommon town) and also in Yorkshire, England. I travel between Ireland and the UK as part of work. I say 'work' but I feel it is part of a lifestyle choice. I work as a cognitive psychotherapist specialising in Mindfulness. As well as working with individuals, I run events around Ireland & the UK.

Our property in Donamon was the old village dance hall, shop and house. We have converted this into a small holistic centre where people can come on personal retreat or a relaxing break. It is designed as a place of tranquility and calm. This creates a perfect opportunity to escape from the business and stress of modern day life and spend time in just 'Being'. I also run some workshops and events there.

We grow our own fruit & veg and are fortunate to have lovely neighbours who have hens, so we share our produce with each other.

I also create a range of art (painting, sculpting, etc.) and write. I find both very therapeutic to living mindfully and staying connected to the present moment.

One of my other passions is I love to cook (and my partner loves to bake).

I enjoy time in nature and also like to socialise with others.

When I travel, I aim to 'experience the journey' rather than focus on getting to the destination. So, my mode of travel tends not to be hurried or rushed.

As a 'guest' I aim to be respectful of the host and their environment. I am friendly, flexible and quiet.

As a 'host' I want to respect guests personal space and privacy, allowing them the freedom to come and go as they please and enjoy their stay. I am also happy to interact with guests if they wish. My aim is for guests to have a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

I suppose if I tried to sum myself up in one sentance it would be that I aim to 'live in harmony with life, whatever life brings' (although my aim is not always right on target).
