A NOTE ABOUT VALUE to think about when you're reviewing, analyzing and dreaming of living here.
There are a few things people don't understand about living in Hawaii esp. in Hana. There are a lot of hidden costs to maintain a life out here. When it rains it pours. We have to fix our road a few times a year after big rains. Which requires tractor work. It's very costly. Imagine trucking in rock on the Hana Highway from the other side. And that rock sinks into the ground and disappears or gets washed away. Since this is one of the wettest places on earth, composting happens very fast. Which means our buildings rot very fast. We have to paint every 5 years instead of every 15 years. A 30-year roof only lasts 15 here. Our cars deteriorate at an astronomical rate. The metal on weed wakers and mowers rot. Small motor engines break often. The salt air is very damaging. On the mainland, a person might by 2 or 3 lawn mowers in their life time. We need to purchase one every 5 years. My neighbor buys a new one every 2 years. Our fridges get rusty from the salt in the air. A new one needs to be bought every 5-8 years. There are termites everywhere, and we need to tent the buildings for spraying every few years. The cost of a building is about $300 a sqft. On the mainland, it's around $100. The cost of cement is $400 per yard. On the mainland, it is $100/yard. It takes us about 30 hours a week just to keep the jungle from taking over our farm. Rain, sun, rain, sun everything grows fast. Bugs get in, cleaning needs to happen every day in everyone's house. Organic certification cost $1000 every year. It takes us a 12 hour day to go get supplies to live out here. We have to go about once every 10 days but it typically happens once a week. So that's a huge fuel cost to go to the store because we have to drive to Kahului. And then there is the property cost and insurance, we live in a hurricane path. So when you think of the value, please think of these things. I just want to say this because some guests have suggested we are making an incredible amount of money. The rentals allow us to stay here. But there are a lot of hidden expenses that people don't think about. Help keep our ratings high so we can keep it up. It's a lot of work. WE love it. And we love sharing it with you.
ABOUT HARVESTINGPICKING FRUIT
You are coming to a 2 acre Hawaii Organic Farm. You can walk around the ground freely. Please don't feel confined to your cottages yard.
Let us do the harvesting. If you see something you'd like to eat find us and ask. We used to let guest pick whatever but they always picked it too early.
Never eat anything without washing it first. This is the tropics. You never know whats been crawling on the produce. We have a serious disease called rat lung worm you can get if you don't wash your food well enough.
There are two private parking spaces available out front of the cottage.
Interaction with guests
Owners live on the property, and are close enough if anything is needed. Always available if we are here.
Other things to note
Please understand you are coming to a tropical wet environment. We have bugs. We are very serious about this. We spray around the outside and sometimes inside. This is a farm, with no cement around the house to keep bugs away. I'd ask that you understand this before you come, and not dock us stars on your review for this reason. We check the cottage every cleaning. Ants move in very quickly. If you find some, please let us know. And if you don't find ants please say in your review. Usually, people only write when they find bugs and not when they don't. I'd say 90%+ of our guests don't find any. They say ants are the only true native. Cockroaches, mosquitos, geckos, and many more bugs are present all over the land. While we do our best to keep these units bug free, it's really a lost cause. The bugs are part of this experiences of the farm. Each unit has a tennis racket bug zapper that you can use to kill the flying ones if you so choose. The racket works really good. You really need to keep your kitchen area cleaner than you would at home. You can't leave any trace of cooking and leave for an outing. If you do, you will come home to a lot of ants. So please clean up. Also, search "bugs in Maui Houses" and you'll see threads from guests staying all over the island talking about how bugs are very common here.

This is a non-smoking property.
Wifi is not available in this cottage at this time. We do have it on the property though. But if your needing to do business here this is probably not your place.
The property is abundant in organic fruits. But we have found that guests pick unripe fruit. So please ask before you pick. Have questions about what to pick? Just ask! Wash before you eat it.

-----If we don't automatically bring you fruit, please feel comfortable to ask for it. We want it to be part of your experience.
---dark hours are quiet hours as sound travels far in the tropical environment. There are no parties. No smoking.
--- All of Hawaii has a policy of no shoes in the house. It's so outdoors here that the dirt gets in so easy. I'll let you choose if you want to follow this. But it's what I'd prefer. Maybe if it's muddy and wet out, take them off.
--Please remove all make-up before bed. Foundation and mascara have proven impossible to get out of the sheets. You will be charged $50 if you ruin the sheets from make-up.
--I will be sending you explicit directions that will explain this further once you book, but there will be a $65 fine if you go to my neighbors house looking for the cottage. :) sorry it's my only way to stop this.
