About this listing
A new cabin (2017) in a large garden with uninterrupted views of the RiverTamar both from the cabin and decking. Ideal retreat for artists, writers, walkers and nature lovers. The garden is unsuitable for children as it is steep, well behaved dogs welcome provided they don't launch themselves into the river as the only access is by a ladder. There is strictly no fishing. Just enjoy a natural habitat, which is plentiful. You might see kingfishers, otters, cormorants, leaping fish, hope so!
The Ottery was originally intended as an artist studio but I decided the view was so beautiful I wanted to share it with other nature and peace lovers. It was completed in April 2017 and is situated at the end of my garden. It has wooden floors in the living areas and tile in the bathroom.
It has far reaching views up the river and is situated close to an ancient bridge. There are 4 fantastic walks available by walking, no need to use the car! When the river is being lazy you can swim from the garden, but you need to ask me first please so I can judge if it is safe as the currents can be deceptive.
It is close to Dartmoor and about 30 mins drive to the coast.
It has no wifi or TV, but I have provided basic artist materials (please bring your own paper), board games, jigsaws and books and magazines.
Mobile service is excellent for Vodaphone, but for other networks you might have to go on the roof to get a signal! If you need to contact someone then provided it is UK you are welcome to use my landline.
The cabin is for your use solely, as is the roof of the cabin which is sunny and has a table and chairs for your use, I have been told on a clear night the view of stars is amazing. You can also share the garden including the fire pit. However I do have a decking area which will remain private to me, but if we get on well: you will be invited to join me, if you want to!
The lower level of the garden is unstable and you need to act sensibly down there, but there is seating and it is very tranquil and you have a unique view of the 16th century bridge!
Interaction with guests
I will be available if needs be, but am planning on people being able to look after themselves, however I am very friendly and enjoy meeting new people.
You are welcome to borrow my washing machine for an extra charge.
A stack of logs will be provided daily if need be but extras will have to be paid for unless it is winter.
Other things to note
The Ottery is in Gunnislake in the AONB The Tamar Valley and is steeped in beauty and history. The woods are filled with daffodils in Spring as the whole area used to be a market garden. Old engine houses and mines are dotted on both sides of the river.
Although there is parking, it is awkward and I might have to ask you to move your vehicle so that I can get out. I will be able to let you know in advance if this needs to happen.
I have provided an insulated glove and riddle for the fire, also an ash can for the fire outside, please use.
Dog owners please pick up pooh in the garden and try to keep animals on the floor.
Smoking is allowed on the decking and in the garden but please bin your butts.
If you spill paint please clean immediately.
Cancel up to 24 hours before your trip and get a full refund. Cancel within 24 hours of your trip and the first night is non-refundable.
I am an early (retired at 59) retired science and special needs teacher (not the job for oldies). I have taught swimming for the last 2 years but my skin has taken a dislike to chlorine so am now trying to do this instead. I am laid back and I hope kind (let me know if I sound teacherish!
I adore animals and nature, I dont have pets but would welcome well behaved ones! I am into keeping fit so do Aqua aerobics 3 times a week and like to go on long walks and swim twice a week. I love board games especially Scrabble.
I have lived here for ten years and might never leave. I am an outdoor person, but am not too keen on gardening at the moment!
I am friendly and can be sociable, but also respect boundaries.
I am tolerant and believe in equality for all, I am respectful but also like to know about people if they are willing to share
