The Bahay Kubo or traditionally the Filipino native nipa hut bungalow is the genuine article, for those who wish to have a pure and truly blissful tropical island experience.
Ideal for couples, families, a group of friends or for those looking for a personal retreat, a private porch opens up to the private pocket garden offering tranquility and the luxury of communing with nature.
A family-run, homegrown residence established in 1990 with an appreciation of real tropical living and managed by a Filipino-Swiss family, one feels right at home in a laidback and relaxed natural environment, away from the hustle & bustle of the tourist destination, but close enough to enjoy the plethora of activities the island has to offer.
Ralph’s Place is owned, designed and built by Swiss-German Ralph Gasser and his Filipina wife, Girlie, originally from Dumaguete City. Together they turned their beautiful residence into the well-loved private hilltop residence that it is now. An electrical engineer by profession for over 30 years, Ralph designed, built and supervised construction, ensuring the quality, durability and comfort of each accommodation. His very hands-on approach to all phases of construction, from carpentry, electrical, to plumbing, has put his signature on the place, turning it into a labor of love. On any given day, you might see him up on a ladder making improvements, here and there.
Completely homegrown, Ralph’ Place evolved organically, with native style houses built in a maintenance-friendly way. Using concrete walls and structures combined with local materials such as bamboo, coconut lumber, recycled wood, amakan (bamboo matting) walls and ceilings and ambulong roofs, each element of every house is handcrafted and woven on-site by his team of indigenous Ati tribesmen who are provided with livelihood and an opportunity at a better quality of life. Other materials are sourced from local manufacturers and suppliers, although each unit is outfitted with modern amenities and fixtures. Most of the furniture is handcrafted from recycled wood after construction, making it environmentally friendly, personalized and utterly charming.
Ralph’s Swiss-German attention to detail coupled with Girlie’s interior decorating creativity, Filipino touches and hospitality are the perfect combination, resulting in an enchanting hilltop retreat that is a destination in itself.
