Centrally located in Kern Place, one of El Paso's most historic and beautiful neighborhoods, this newly remodeled 1917 Arts & Crafts bungalow apartment brims has lots of charm. Hardwood floors, 3/4 bath, and a kitchen that includes a table and chairs, gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and coffee maker. Close proximity to UTEP, Providence Hospital, the hip Cincinnati Entertainment District, and downtown make this an ideal home base for exploring El Paso and surrounding area.

The space

Your detached space is a 375sq. ft. apartment with a separate bedroom, 3/4 bath, 8.5 foot ceilings and hardwood floors. Plenty of light with two large double hung windows, a french door (your private entrance) and two skylights. The space was originally a single car garage with housekeeper’s quarters attached to the back. The space has been completely renovated including new plumbing, electrical, floor, tile and a kitchen added.

Both the bedroom and living/kitchen area are now equipped with a mini-split heat pump for A/C and Heat. The Casita has two ceiling fans, a HEPA air filtration system, a kitchen which includes; a gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, pots and pans, coffee maker, french press, dishes and silverware. Also included is fast WiFi, with TV with access to Netflix and/or HBO Now and an electronic key pad lock with your personal code.

In the bedroom is a full sized bed, the common area has a sleeper sofa suitable for a child or small adult (the sofa is 67” wide). There is a wardrobe/closet and a chest of drawers both empty for your use or just plop your suitcase on the luggage rack. The private bath has an updated shower with a high mounted shower head.

Guest access

Access to the apartment is through the cedar gate near the carport, I’ll send detailed instructions when you book. The back yard is shared space, which is and has a table and 4 chairs under a pergola, water feature, xeriscape with landscape lighting. There is also a small patio with table/umbrella and 4 chairs in front of your Casita. You are also welcome to use the front porch where you can watch the world and the neighbors go by. The backyard, patio and front porch are shared spaces.

Interaction with guests

I’ll greet you, show you the place, and then leave you on your own. If you need something, just ask. I’m happy to make recommendations of things to see and do in El Paso.

Other things to note

Complimentary items include: coffee, tea, and a few extra items to perk up weary travelers.

There is no cable TV. The major networks are provided through a high definition antenna and Netflix and HBO Now through a Firestick.

Me / You

I am a native El Pasoan, father of two, grandfather of one. I've recently retired and thought hosting an AirBnb would be a great way to meet new people and earn a little income. I love the outdoors and you'll often find me camping, hiking, or biking or working on a home project. I'm also an amateur guitarist and woodworker.

I’m looking for guests who are kind and thoughtful and who are looking for the best El Paso, Juarez and the surrounding area has to offer. I like to keep a neat home and so I ask for respectful guests who leave a place as they found it. No pets, and please ask about children. The Casita is a safe place, but is not toddler proof.

** Please send a message to check availability as I occasionally will forget to block a date, ...and tell me a bit about yourself.

Everything was just as the ad described. We arrived late and left early, so I never met our kind host. But he was responsive via messaging, and his accommodations were great.

John was a superb host. Very personable and appreciate the fact he came out to greet us upon our arrival. Cozy gem in a charming neighborhood! Fantastic use of space with ample space for all your belongings. Love the attention to details, thoughtfulness and thoroughness. House was immaculate and well maintained, beautiful garden and relaxing patio. A/C works really well too. Parking available on street or in covered car port. Highly recommend!! You will feel at home.

This is the place for near-west side El Paso! Close to downtown, walking distance to UTEP and the Cincinnati St. bistros, and in the middle of Kern Place--the finest old-school neighborhood in the city. When El Paso's hundred-year old streetcar system becomes fully restored and operational next year, you will be able to walk to the nearest stop. The small guest house is exactly as portrayed on the website, which is why I had no problem with expectations: my expectations were high, and John met them. He will meet you and show you around. Charming and easy-going, and then he'll leave you to your privacy. You have a kitchenette and a private patio, as well as a shared patio with the other guest room. I didn't see that one, but I think the choice is between a smaller bedroom suite with kitchenette and larger bedroom without kitchenette. Private patio is with the suite. Impeccably clean and modernized, with old El Paso charm. There is a bike shop at the bottom of the street where you can rent a bike for your visit--Crazy Cat Cyclery. And Madeline Park is one block away. Thanks John--you've done a terrific job!
