Unique, historic, tranquil and private accommodation 15 minutes South of Greymouth, 2 mins drive to Shantytown and 5 mins drive to the Wilderness cycle trail. Te Pahika ( the runaway) was originally built in 1907 as a guards van and crashed at Moana in 1963. It literally did runaway. Nestled at the far end of the large pond in a secluded area with a raw native bush backdrop, the setting sun, abundant bird song, and local wildlife. Te Pahika promises to offer you a relaxing and peaceful stay.
The space
It is our pleasure to share Te Pahika with you. Please read the whole listing so that you know what to expect before choosing to stay here. Te Pahika is a one of a kind historic property, sympathetically and lovingly restored, and set up for self-catering. Te Pahika offers a unique and peaceful stay ,somewhere to unwind and relax away from the day to day hustle and bustle of the modern technical world, where you can enjoy being close to the West Coast bush and nature, with rustic elements and original features coupled with modern comforts. The main carriage has a comfortable queen bed made up European style, a seating area to relax overlooking the large pond, and a small dressing room space with an area for luggage storage.
Across the semi covered deck "platform" you will find the purpose built structure "train station" housing a well equipped kitchen with a 2 burner gas cook top, microwave and small fridge and a modern bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.
Outside nestled against the bush, you will find the rustic outdoor bath area.
Te Pahika does not have a TV - We do have free wi-fi, which we ask you to use responsibly - please do not download movies.
For your comfort and convenience during your stay you will find a hair dryer, a hard wired usb charger port, spare blankets, knee rugs - for those clear chilly nights star gazing, some books and board games.

To fully appreciate Te Pahika, its peace and tranquility multiple night stays are recommended.
To keep costs for our guests down, we do not charge a cleaning fee but ask that you leave the place as you find it and wash and dry all dishes on departure.

Guest access
Guests have complete access to Te Pahika train carriage, kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor bath area. You are welcome to explore the bush and fields around the area but please take care of muddy and uneven ground, dont go into the field with the sheep in it and respect the private grassed areas around the house.
Other things to note
Care should be taken at all times, especially when exploring unpathed areas due to the uneven and sometimes soft and slippery ground around the property, pond, and in the bush. Tea, coffee, sugar, milk ,cooking oil, soap, towels for the bathroom and outdoor bath, citronella candles, fly spray ,dish wash liquid, dish cloths and tea towels are provided for your use during your stay.
Check-in is between 3pm and 9pm, and check out is strictly before 10am however early check-in and late check out are often possible with prior arrangement - please feel free to ask. There may be times when the outdoor bath may not be available due to lack of rainfall which we rely on for our water needs, and for that reason we ask that you be mindful of the amount of water used during your stay and respect the strictly one bath per stay request to allow enough water for all guests when there are periods of no rainfall especially during the summer months.
Te Pahika is classed as semi rural, the nearest local pub "Paroa" with restaurant and local dairy are about a 3 minute drive from us, and we are off of the main road in a secluded and peaceful location, if you prefer to be closer to amenities and a town location, then Te Pahika may not be the right choice for you.
If you feel unwell with Covid 19 symptoms during your stay, please let us know so that we can take appropriate cleaning and hygiene measures.
