Unique, historic, tranquil and private accommodation 15 minutes South of Greymouth, 2 mins drive to Shantytown and 5 mins drive to the Wilderness cycle trail. Te Pahika ( the runaway) - was originally built in 1907 as a guards van and crashed at Moana in 1963. It literally did runaway. Nestled at the far end of the large pond in a secluded area with a raw native bush backdrop, the setting sun, abundant bird song and local wildlife. Te Pahika promises to offer you a relaxing and peaceful stay.

The space
It is our pleasure to share Te Pahika with you. It is a one of a kind historic property, quite different from a motel or hotel room. Here you have a fully equipped self contained/catering accommodation choice offering a unique and peaceful stay. Somewhere to unwind and relax away from the day to day hustle and bustle of the modern technical world, where you can enjoy being close to the West Coast bush and nature, with rustic elements and yet modern comforts. The main carriage has a comfortable queen bed made up European style, with an electric blanket (removed during the summer months) , a seating area to relax overlooking the large pond and a small dressing room space with an area for luggage storage.
Across the semi covered deck "platform" you will find the purpose built structure "train station" housing a fully equipped kitchen with a 2 burner gas cook top, microwave and small fridge and a modern bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.
Outside nestled against the bush you will find the rustic outdoor bath area with hot water on demand
Te Pahika does not have a TV - We do have free wi-fi which we ask you to use responsibly.
For your comfort and convenience during your stay you will find a hair dryer, hard wired usb charger ports, spare blankets, knee rugs - for those clear chilly nights star gazing and a few other added extras.
The area from the car parking space and surrounding the train carriage complex is pathed for your convenience -
To fully appreciate Te Pahika and its peace and tranquility multiple night stays are recommended.
We do not charge a cleaning fee and ask that you leave the place as you find it.

Guest access
Guests have complete access to Te Pahika train carriage, kitchen, bathroom and outdoor bath area. You are welcome to explore the bush and fields around the area but please take care of muddy and uneven ground, dont go into the field with the sheep in it and respect the private areas around the house.

Other things to note
Care should be taken at all times especially when exploring unpathed areas due to the uneven and sometimes soft and slippery ground around the property, pond and in the bush. Tea,coffee, sugar, milk ,some toiletries, towels for the bathroom and outdoor bath, citronella candles, bug spray , fly spray , dish wash liquid, dish cloths and tea towels are provided for your use during your stay.
Due to work ,family and other commitments check in is between 3pm and 9pm and check out is strictly before 10am. If you would like an early check in or late check out just let us know and will do our best to accommodate.
Whilst we have provided an outdoor bath for our guests use there may be times when this facility may not be available due to a lack of water as we rely on rainfall for our water needs, and for that reason we ask that you be mindful of the amount of water used during your stay.
We do ask that you leave the place as you find it.
By choosing to stay with us you are agreeing that if you feel unwell with Covid 19 symptoms during your stay you let us know immediately. Shantytown is 2 minutes drive from our place. Paroa is about 5 minutes drive from our place where there is a local pub serving evening meals and a dairy for essentials or perhaps an ice cream or milk shake. Paroa is also where you can pick up the Wilderness cycle trail. A little further along the road heading North there is a combined dairy and fish and chip shop, (Four J's) - a great option for a west coast sunny evening to watch the sunset at the beach, eating fish and chips out of the newspaper :) More places to dine can be found in Greymouth which is about a 12 to 15 minutes drive from our place

Hi. We moved to NZ from UK in 1997. David my husband is from New Zealand, and we met in Denmark where we lived for several years in the 80's. We have two grown up children and three grandchildren who visit often. We are family focused, we love our home and the West Coast ,but also enjoy exploring the country in our caravan and the occasional overseas holiday. We like to grow vegetables and some fruit - although sometimes we are not that successful. We keep chickens - who provide all our fresh eggs, and we usually have some sheep who do a great job of mowing the lawns in our back paddocks. We are keen DIY'ers who love to up-cycle, and re purpose. We look forward to welcoming you to our place.

During your stay
The beauty of Te Pahika is that it is self contained, secluded and private, therefore we will not be disturbing you during your stay.
If you do need anything or if you would like some advice or to ask a question please message or call us initially as David is a shift worker and is sometimes asleep during the day
On occasions you may see us attending the sheep from the parking area which adjoins the field where they live next to Te Pahika
