Small rural stone house restored with private garden and parking, offers tranquillity and a stunning view to Serra da Freita and Frecha da Mizarela waterfall. Great starting point to reach the remote hills of Freita, where you can enjoy long hikes, river baths or simply visit the geological and archaeological sites of Arouca Geopark. Although located in a small rural village, nearby you can find grocery stores and good restaurants with local gastronomy; Porto city is just 50 min away by car.

The space

The house accommodates up to 4 adults and offers 1 master bedroom with private bathroom, balcony, fan and heater at the upper floor; below there's a comfortable living room with a sofa bed, wood heater, Tv and DVD player, small toilet and kitchenette well equipped also with dishwasher. You also have available some DVD, in case you want to watch some movies, as well as books (portuguese and english).

From the inner courtyard you can reach a covered dining area with grill and wood oven, where you can make a barbecue, and there's a small laundry area with washing machine. The property also has private parking area with direct access to the house entrance.

In the morning you can have your breakfast at the cool dining area or at the sunny courtyard, enjoying the view to the hills; in the afternoon, after a day out, you can relax and have a rest in the garden lawn, next to traditional raccard (used to keep corn cobs), or in the shady courtyard, if it's too warm.

Besides the house presented in the pictures, there's another house inside the property where my family sometimes go to spend some days (we don't live there).

Guest access

You have access to the house presented in the photos, garden, entrance and inner courtyard, covered dining area with grill and wood oven and small laundry area. This areas are shared with my family when we are staying in the main house.

Interaction with guests

In case we are not there you will be received by Maria that lives nearby and that's happy to show you around and give you some help. If you're not Portuguese all explanations and instructions will be given to you written in English/ French/ German/ Spanish and I will be always in contact in case you need any help.
If you arrive after 20:00 it's possible to leave the house keys at the local cafe.

Other things to note

Located at the top of the quiet rural mountain village of Gatão, it´s just 15 min away by car from Arouca Geopark where you can find a network of great hiking trails, beautiful river beaches and several great sites to visit as Frecha da Mizarela, one of the biggest waterfalls in Europe, and Pedras Parideiras, a very rare geological phenomenon; further away you have Paiva river walkway, worth a visit.

Closer to the house it's Paço de Mato river beach, just 5 min by car, and, if you prefer to walk, it takes only 15 min to reach the prehistoric rock carvings of Outeiros dos Riscos, part of the Water and Stone Circuit (Rota da Água e da Pedra).

Just across the street there's a small grocery store and 5 min by car, at the village of Felgueira, you will find two really good restaurants: Mira Freita e Nino da Freita, where you can have a taste of the local gastronomy; there's also a small store with local handcraft, perfect to buy presents.

For more variety in terms of food shopping you can go to Vale de Cambra city, 10km away; there's a street market at Vale de Cambra, days 9 and 23 of the month; if it happens to be a Sunday they move it to Saturday.

Arouca town is around 25km away and Porto, the second most important city in Portugal, is just 50 min away by car (around 60km).

The mobile phone network is not great in the area but you can use your mobile phone by the bedroom windows and front door.

Maria received us quite well and was of great help during our stay. Paula was very communicative and wanted to assure that everything was going as excepted. The house itself is quite good, and with a great view to admire early in the morning. Wi-Fi wasn't that great, but well, if you are going to rest your head of a couple of days in a 'country house' you kinda want to disconnect from everything. Overall it was a pretty good stay, and Paula's advices were definetly a major point :)

Paula's place is a lovely traditional casa that has been beautifully restored and furnished. The casa is well equipped with outside kitchen, BBQ, traditional oven and all modern comfort. Great place to relax and enjoy the region. A stunning view over the valley. And a lot of hiking possibilities in the area (caminhos). Also excellent communication and information by Paula. We loved it!

We can highly recommend this beautiful house with its lovely garden and a very private courtyard. We didn't miss anything in the well equiped kitchen. Paula was a great host and sent suggestions well in advanced on what to do in the area. We did two of the hikes both very nice. A perfect stay if you want to hike in the mountains or relax on the balcony with a fantastic view. Would gladly come back!

Definitely one of the best experiences through Airbnb. If you're looking for a beautiful more secluded, non turisty place it won't be a miss! The place itself looks even better than on pictures. Vrey cosy, with stunning views. Perfect for 2-4 people. All of the basic amenities were also provided, including a washing machine, dishwasher and impressive bbq area. Cleanness of the cottage was kept to a high standard. Paula provided us with detailed directions to the plac and plenty information about various activities in the area. Trip the local springs  where you can have a refreshing bath is a must! She also turned out to be very patient and helpful with our last minute booking rearrangements, what we are very thankfully for

Perfect! Best AirbnB accomodation we ever had. I fine place to be 10 holidays. A house with everything you need, confortable, clean, beautiful furniture, good and enough kitchen stuff, nice, silent and privat atmosphere inside and outside. Paula and here parents are very nice and helpful hosts. Its located between seaside area and mountains, so its a good for trips to both sides.
