The space

Why come to Baraka Antigua?

A getaway from Antigua's charming buzz. Looking for serenity whilst maintaining easy access to the colonial city? Baraka Antigua is minutes away. Jardines de Antigua is our neighborhood - peaceful, beautiful, safe.

Choose from numerous intimate spaces to occupy - both indoors and outdoors with over a dozen shared spaces: informal kitchen gathering space, panoramic rooftop terrace, fireside lounge sofas, formal dining table, library reading corner, yoga&meditation room, relaxing front porch rocking chairs, garden coffee table corners, traditional Guatemalan sauna, garden dining room, outdoor lounge & sweetheart coffee table.

- Garden: aesthetic, colorful, tropical, fish pond, plants, mural, green bamboo wall, jasmine.
- Yoga&Meditation room: symbolism, colors, chakras, energy, 5 elements, peacefulness, light & darkness, candles & incense.
- Library corner: inspiring, fiction, healing, reality, beauty, humanity, living, serenity.
- Moroccan lounge: travel, exotic, romanticism, music, informal connections, bohemian, evenings in good company, escape to another world.
- Front porch rocking chairs: candles, garden views, sheltered, outside, glass of wine, conversations, scents of the night, read a book.
- Kitchen: heart of the house, social hub, home grown organic coffee, cook at home.

The word "Chapin" is the colloquial term for referring to anything Guatemalan. I named this room Chapin because of the art that has been hung in this room, showing local traditions in weaving and the life cycle of corn (from growing, harvesting, milling, grinding, tortilla making and celebrating life and this food item that is central to the Chapin way of life not just for its nutritious properties, but culturally revered and regarded as the substance from which man was created according to the Popol Vuh -- the scriptures central to the Mayan belief system). This room has a queen size bed, its own TV/DVD system for bedtime viewing, and its own full en-suite bathroom.

Our Rooftop Terrace: watch erupting volcanoes from the best vantage point! Savour mesmerizing scenery over your breakfast while you spend time with your morning coffee soaking in the view of the volcanoes and dissipating mists as the sun rises above the hills.

We love the social buzz - inviting you to connect with some new friends:
- cute (yet discreet) garden hens,
- tropical bees: reassuringly they are stingless! They are much smaller than regular bees, often mistaken for funny flies. See if you can find the different beehives and let use know!
- our garden cat: Indie! She talks a lot and is rather social. She lives outside, but will come inside if invited.
- our other guests. Yes, if you are just renting a room then you will likely not be alone in the house. (there are 4 other rooms that we rent out aswell - so why not bring your friends?). We offer you the opportunity to relate with some interesting people during your stay - sharing your stories and their's.

Nowadays with our often complicated lives, luxury lies in simplicity.

After you complete your reservation with us, we will offer logistical services for booking:

The room is small but comfortable, apart from being a bit damp due to the rain and being in the middle of the house with no external windows (there are windows to the laundry room.) If you like quiet, it was really quiet for that reason. The bathroom was nice and had the best shower I've had in Guatemala. Also great towels and bedding. It was really rainy when I was there so I wasn't able to enjoy the outside spaces but the gardens and the roof looked really nice. There are lots of communal spaces indoors but I can still imagine it being a bit crowded (or noisy) if all the rooms were full. It would be a great house to rent with a group of friends though. The setting is kind of more suburban than rural (one of the routes to Antigua has heavy traffic; the other is half pleasant dirt road and half cars driving really fast but not so many of them) but peaceful. There are 2 garden cafes along the way (Escalonia Vivero and Caoba Organic Farm) that are worth stopping in.

This house captured my heart. The terrace hammock was a perfect place to drink a glass of wine with a view of the volcanoes. The back yard with its koi pond perfect for afternoons with the kitten. The kitchen is pretty well stocked (pots and pans etc) and fun to cook in. Remember to save food scraps for the chickens (they seemed very hungry). BEWARE: the downstairs bedrooms are very dark and damp. After a month I packed my things into a suitcase that was covered in mildew. I'd recommend upstairs for longer stays.

This room was perfect for us as a couple! The shower is small but for us perfect, the most powerful and warmest in 6 months travelling and using airbnb! Lovely feel to the house! We saw the volcano erupt from the roof top which was amazing to see! The kitchen is perfect and has everything you need! 20 miss to

This home is really unique. JB, who helps manage the home, picked us up from station and offered to be a driver for us wherever we needed including airport which is useful, and he is friendly and kind. The home itself has all you need and has wonderful views of volcanos. Thanks again and I would enjoy coming back.

We loved our stay at Gregs place. We stayed in the Chapin room downstairs as a couple it's small but cosy with very comfortable bed and lovely furnishings, the ensuite is small but spotless, we are both quite tall 6ft and had to squeeze in a tad to shower but it was hot and high pressure. The two upstairs rooms have bigger bathrooms if you prefer. The shared spaces are amazing, the lounge, Moroccan movie room and meditation room are furnished beautifully. The kitchen is superb, amazing oven, well equipped and a wonderful space to be in. The garden and rooftop are also stunning, we spent hours relaxing. The whole place is set in amongst greenery in a beautiful neighbourhood and you feel relaxed and at home the whole time. I cannot recommend highly enough. The location is 15mins walk from antigua centre or a 15-20q tuk tuk - there is an amazing organic farm/store restaurant about 10mins walk away. Greg was away but we arranged collection with JB who was friendly, professional and checked us in (it was very useful as he explained how we should advise tuk tuk drivers to find the address). Nancy takes care of the cleaning 3 days per week and was absolutely lovely and efficient. Indi the cat was just lovely! Thanks Greg, Nancy and Jb.

Greg's house is wonderful - very unique and a pleasure to stay at. The location is slightly out of town but easily within reach of the city centre on a chicken bus. We stayed in the small room, which is great if you are on a budget but does have some drawbacks. There is not much storage space so was a squeeze for two people. There is a small bathroom next to the room, but there is no door separating it from the main room. Apart from obvious issues of privacy there was an unpleasant smell from the bathroom that pervaded the main bedroom. If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend upgrading to one of the larger rooms which are beautiful. Overall I'd highly recommend Greg's unique house.
