This prestigious home was once owned by Richard Sterling, Astrologer to the Stars, with it's unique terraced astrological gardens that overlook the Jamison Valley. The gardens were made famous on Burke's Backyard and the Leura Garden Festival up until the 90's.
Set in beautifully landscaped, terraced gardens of the late renowned Astrologer Richard Sterling, prominent astrologer to the "Stars", is the garden suite.
There are 2 bedrooms with an adjoining door, the latest hydronic heating, in winter and electric blankets and the building is very cool in summer. Quality bed linen and fluffy towels ooze luxe.
Beautifully appointed Hotel style accommodation. The suite has a desk and chair, microwave, kettle, toaster, crockery, cutlery, TV + selection of DVD's, one bathroom with shower, equipped with hydronic towel heating.
You may stroll through the Garden of the Stars (named after the astrological star signs of the zodiac.) from your rooms and watch the clouds drift over the valley and admire the colour shades of the escarpment and prolific bird life.
The expansive view offers a magical space that will inspire creativity and has been appreciated by artists, poets and writers in the past.
It doesn't get better than this.... we call this prime location with arguably the best views in the valley without the boutique hotel price tag.
From your accommodation you are moments away from the world heritage listed bushwalks and the Three Sisters at Echo Point.
Outdoor furniture in the garden is available to guests. There are secret hiding spots in the vast garden, with table and chairs in the Aquarius section that you may like. With a beautiful water fountain that attracts birds most of the day.
You will be sharing the gardens with Sulphur crested cockatoos, Crimson Rosellas, Fairy Wrens, Red Wattle Birds, Butcher Birds, Rainbow Lorekeets, King Parrots, Currawongs, Crows and Finches. You may see our resident and tame Lyre birds digging for worms in the garden and generally making a mess.
Please DO NOT feed the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos as they then expect food on a regular basis and when left alone they attack the timber decking.
The house is steeped in history -previously owned by the Late Richard Sterling, Television icon who wrote Astrology columns in the Australian Woman's Weekly magazine for many years and had his own television show in the 1970's.
Richard entertained many of the television greats with soirees and charity functions at the house where he himself, an accomplished pianist, played the piano.
Forged out of sloping land, the terraced gardens took over 12 months to build with the help of an Italian Stone Mason. Astrology signs are posted along sandstone pathways that terrace down the slope.
The gardens are in full bloom during spring with established Rhododendron, Magnolia, Azalea, Camellia, daffodils, fresia, tulips etc that will uplift your spirit as you take in the peaceful energy and beauty all around you. The ambiance is quite heavenly and has been felt and talked about by all who stay here.
Guests enter their room with a private entrance via the driveway. Walking through a beige coloured metal gate, past a set of stairs and through another gate. Room entrance is on the right.
Your key is accessed by code in a lock box located beside the sliding door to your room.
Guests have direct access and are welcome to enjoy the escarpment views in the rear garden.
Interaction with guests
Interaction with guests is kept to a minimum to respect their privacy.
The owner often welcomes guests when in residence and is available to make suggestions when asked, and happy to drop you off at the railway station if you have no car.
For those traveling on your own and would like company on a bush walk this can also be arranged. Your accommodation is separate from the house with total privacy and you can come and go as you please.
Be sure to say goodbye before you leave and tell me all about your stay here and what you liked. I'd love to here!
Other things to note
There are local cafes for breakfast, the closest is at the Waradah Food Court within 3 minutes walk.
Katoomba Street is the main road in town- with Aldi, Woolworths, Target and Big W in one shopping area for your convenience. Explore the many eclectic cafes which are all good.
If you are coming up for a special occasion you MUST pre book your table as restaurants in the mountains are generally booked out on weekends.
My favourite restaurants for special occasions are:
The Avalon with live background jazz music set in the old Savoy picture theatre- very quirky!
Pins Fine Dining restaurant. Katoomba
Darleys fine dining ( Lilianfels) Katoomba
Check out the Carrington Hotel on Katoomba street near train station, with it's beautiful lead lights and charm and the Old City Bank next door with award winning bistro meals upstairs and wine bar downstairs with a live band on weekends.
If you'd like to bring some breakfast items with you, there is a toaster and electric kettle for tea and coffee which is also supplied. Bring your own milk and muesli or bread to toast and eat alfresco with the view out back.
