This rustic cabin, affectionately known as The Shack, is and has been a beloved guest space to our visiting friends and family. Available for Airbnb in between. Includes outdoor relaxing space with a view of our family micro vineyard and the mountains. Great access to all L.A. Freeways. Minutes from Downtown L.A, 20 minutes from Hollywood. Close to a beautiful walking/running trail in Elysian Park.
Please see photos to understand the space best. It is a rustic, aged wood, eclectic, quirky cabin environment. If quirky doesn’t sound a little bit fun to you, then this probably isn’t the place for you. The original builders of our home and The Shack used a lot of found and recycled materials. The door to the bathroom is a curtain; the bathroom and kitchen share the same sink, etc.
The Shack is very comfortable for 1-2 people. There is a futon couch that could accommodate up to 2 more people and the bed is tall so a suitcase or two can slide under it to make some room, but it will feel cramped for more than 2 people. If conversion of the futon couch to a bed is required please let us know before your stay. We’ll make up the bed for you and it will need to stay in the bed position for the length of your stay. Please see pictures for what that will look like.
Our song and screenwriting friends have said The Shack is a great space for creative thinking. It’s also equipped with a Shack-tainment system including Apple TV with Netflix & Hulu, a wireless Bluetooth speaker so you can play your jams off your phone in the Shack (or unplug it from the charger and take it on the patio), and an extensive DVD collection.
The only view from inside the Shack is of the inside of the wood shed but there is a nice view from the patio just above it (see pictures) where you can watch the sunset from the covered swing or have coffee and/or a bite to eat at the table overlooking the vineyard and the mountains. This area also includes a small gas Weber grill you are welcome to use for outdoor grilling. There are fresh herbs next to The Shack stairs to spice up your grilling or cooking.
If you're planning a trip to the beach while you're in LA, let us know. We have beach supplies (towels, chairs, umbrella, sunscreen) that you can use during your stay.
IMPORTANT: Due to the sloped, uneven terrain and the SHEER CLIFF at the far end, we prefer that you enjoy the view of our little vineyard from the safety of the patio. Unguided entry into the vineyard is not allowed. If you really want to go into the vineyard, please talk to us first. For the reasons mentioned earlier all entry into the vineyard is at your own risk.
The cabin is accessible via three flights of stairs if you unload your luggage from the street, two flights if you unload from our driveway. A parking space on the driveway is available at no charge. Instruction re: parking is necessary and will be provided.
Because of the hilly nature of our area, phone reception can be spotty depending on your carrier but if you have a wifi calling setting on your phone this usually works well while you’re in The Shack. When you are out and about in the main area of Echo Park you are much less likely to have reception problems.
Interaction with guests
We live in the main house on the property and only offer The Shack on Airbnb when we are home. The Shack is nestled in out back and in spite of being fairly close to our next door neighbor (this is a major city after all), is still private when you’re tucked in there.
We respect our guests’ privacy and don’t “hover” but we are pretty much always available if you have any questions and or need anything. Just text or call. We consider the back patio your private space while you are there. If we have to go down there or into the vineyard we will send you a message with some advanced notice beforehand unless we have to hurry for some reason (as in the case of sudden strong wind and we need to close the umbrella, for example).
Because some might ask: We make wine, but only in very small batches and we unfortunately do not have enough to share with guests especially because of the very low yield during California’s recent drought years when we watered just enough to keep the vines alive. Ours is a micro, family vineyard, just enough for our own consumption and we do not sell wine. Our apologies.
- No smoking, candles or incense or lit items of any kind in The Shack ever.
- No parties except a very small dinner party. We live here – we’ll know.
- Visitors are allowed; we just ask that they park on the street so that they don't block our ability to go in and out of our driveway.
- Please be nice to our neighbors and try not to be loud after 10:00pm on weeknights and 11:30pm on weekends. Reasonable interior TV and music volume inside after these hours is okay.

-We generally do not allow film crews to film in the Shack because of the wear and tear the equipment causes no matter how careful everyone is. Sorry!
