Located in Bungalow, which is approximately 2 kilometres from the City is this lovely one bedroom, ground floor apartment that is perfect for your stay. It is an ideal place to come and explore Cairns, the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef - but still be affordable.

The space

The Complex

We are the owners of the entire block. There are 7 units in this complex and over the years we have tried to upgrade the property to bring it up to a good standard. This is a work in progress and we are constantly upgrading when we can. We have beautiful gardens externally - and inside we have renovated.

We are offering good quality accommodation at a budget price. Inside we have tried to make it as nice as possible for our guests, and compensate with the nice extras we provide.

The Space

Although an older apartment, we try to upgrade internally as quickly as we can. Having a well presented apartment is high on our priorities. Providing a very clean environment is just as important. We have recently renovated inside and the photos don’t do it justice. It is a really nice, clean apartment and perfect for your stay. It is fully tiled through out, including the bedrooms.

There is near new furniture and good quality for budget accommodation. We also have a large kitchen with electric oven and cooktop and a brand new fridge. We do provide a washing machine, but not a dryer. We have put lots of photos on so you can see the property internally and externally - it is a great, affordable property that is within an easy walk to the City Centre.

You get to use the entire one bedroom unit for your stay. There is a queen sized bed in the main bedroom. There is a lounge and a single day bed in the living area. This has a good quality single mattress - giving you a comfortable nights sleep. This provides beds for 3 adults comfortably. The bedroom and living area has a ceiling fan – perfect for circulating the air and keeping you cool in our hot summer. We also have a split system air conditioner in the living area and bedroom - perfect for our warmer weather.

The bathroom has a bath tub, with step over shower. The kitchen and bathroom are yours to use for the stay and are not shared with any one else in the building.

Guest access

You get to use the entire one bedroom apartment, including kitchen and bathroom for your stay. There is no sharing of facilities. There are common parking areas to the front, and common washing lines to the side.

Interaction with guests

We do not live on site, however keeping our guests is a high priority. If there are any issues at all during the stay all we ask is that a message be sent and we can try our best to resolve any issues quickly.

What is in the Apartment?

The property comes self contained and we provide linen to the beds, and towels for all guests. The kitchen is self contained with everything down to the wine glasses!!

To make your stay a little bit nicer, we do provide some extras. In the shower you will find shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. There is hand wash at both the kitchen and vanity. We provide the essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, aluminium foil, plastic wrap etc. There is a large fridge and freezer for you to use, a full cooking facility as well as a microwave. The unit does come with a washing machine, but no dryer. There are plenty of washing lines to the side of the property for you to use.

There is a television so you can watch all the free to air channels
We also have high speed internet at the property. You will receive the wifi details the day before you arrive. You and your guests can use this during your stay.

In the fridge you will find some basics to make your stay nice – we have tea, coffee, milk and sugar – we have a nice variety of teas as well as herbal teas. In the fridge you will find a variety of jams, peanut butter and of course the all Australian VEGEMITE!! There is tomato sauce, salt and pepper as well as oil and vinegar. Best of all we also leave you a packet of our famous Australian Tim Tam biscuits – you need to investigate the Tim Tam Slam and see how to best enjoy these classic Australian biscuits. We do not provide breakfast with in the booking.

There is a small balcony area to sit at the front of the apartment if you wish to smoke. We ask that you please do not smoke inside.

How Many People Can Stay??

This property is a one bedroom unit and there is one queen bed as well as a single day bed – ideal for THREE guests.

We do provide good quality linen to the beds, a quilt cover and pillows to all beds. As we live in a tropical environment where the temperature rarely dips below 20 degrees at night time - WE DO NOT PROVIDE BLANKETS. There will be a towel for each paying guest provided, as well as hand towels. Please note we do not provide beach towels.

Cairns Climate

We are located in the wet tropics. This means it is HOT all year round. Even in our winter it is still warm during the day.

Summer (December – February)
During summer in Cairns, average temperatures range from 23.6 - 31.4°C (74.5 - 88.5°F). The wet season begins building up around December, and most of the region's annual rainfall (around 2000mm / 78.7") occurs in the summer months.

Autumn (March – May)
It is still very warm in autumn, both day and night, with temperatures averaging between 21.5 - 29°C (70.7 - 84.2°F). The rain subsides from April, however the weather can be windy until August.

Winter (June – August)
Winter in Cairns brings slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity, making it the peak tourist season. Average temperatures range from 17.5 - 26°C (63.5 - 78.8°F) and there is low rainfall.

Spring (September – November)
In spring average temperatures range from 20.5 – 29°C (68.9 - 84.2°F). This is the end of the dry season when humidity starts to build with the onset of the wet season from December. In November the reef comes alive with the annual coral spawning.

Keeping Cool in Cairns

We do live in the wet tropics and being hot and humid is part of daily life. Our winters are cooler, but during the day they are still warm enough to wear shorts and a t shirt.

In the property you will find ceiling fans in the living area as well as the bedrooms. To help keep cool, I suggest you turn the fans on – this will circulate the air around and help keep you cool.

There is air conditioning in the unit for you to use during your stay. In the bedrooms there are box air conditioner. If you have this set at 25 degrees, this will keep the bedrooms cool but still be efficient. Part of offering affordable accommodation is asking our guests to turn off the air conditioners when they aren’t home. There is no issue with using the air conditioners when at home.

As our minimum temperature – even in winter rarely dips below 20 degrees, we provide linen to the beds, and a quilt cover. There are no blankets or quilts in the apartment – keeping cool is our problem not keeping warm!!

I do need to stress that this property is an older property and it is not as cool as many modern properties. We have tried to provide sufficient air conditioning to make your stay comfortable.


Cairns is still a large Country town in many respects. Fortunately there is only timed and paid for parking right in the middle of the City. At Buchan Street there is plenty of parking in the carports in the complex. You can park there for free.

At the front of the building there is a large open area and you may park any where. These are not marked and are available for any of our guests to use during their stay. Again it is free to park and not timed.

Neighbourhood – Overview

The location of our Buchan Street property is great as the City Centre, Esplanade, shops and restaurants are not far away. It is approximately 2 kilometres away. The suburb of Bungalow is not far from the City Centre or the Esplanade so you can be walking along the foreshore after a short walk. There are lots of take away restaurants near by. The major supermarkets of Coles and Woolworths are closer into the middle of the City but still an easy walk away.

The walk into the Centre of the City will depend on your level of fitness and speed you walk. It will take any where between 25 - 40 minutes to get right into the middle of the City.

The reef tours all depart from the Pier, which is in the middle of the City and really easy to get to. Cairns has one of the best range of restaurants you could want – you really have to try Oasis Kebabs on the Esplanade – they do the best kebabs in the whole world.

The Airport is approximately 10 minutes drive away. You can take a taxi which will cost approximately $15 – 20 depending on the time of day and traffic conditioners. There is also Uber, however I personally have not used this service before.

Checking in and Checking out

As soon as possible, please confirm your arrival and departure times so we can put this into our calendar.

One of the most important things to us is to provide a really clean property for our guests to stay at. A thorough clean is performed between guests, and to maintain the standard we need to have the check out time at 10am and the check in time as 2pm.

We have a lock box on site for the apartment – meaning you can arrive at any time without the need for us to meet you on site. Details of the property and how to access the lock box will be sent to you the day before your arrival. You will be provided with two keys for you to use during your stay.

Pet Friendly – What does that means?

One of the reasons we started doing Airbnb is because of the lack of pet friendly accommodation. We have two small dogs and we love to travel with them. The definition of pet friendly varies – for us it means they can come inside, they can sit on the sofa with you, they can sleep on the bed with you and they can be part of your holiday here in Cairns. We do not expect our dogs to sleep outside – so if your pets live inside with you, that is fine.

We do ask that you are mindful of other guests and have your pet on a lead at all times. We also ask that you pick up any poop from the gardens and ground. The property does not have an exclusively fenced yard and limited gardens. The Esplanade is a short walk away and the ideal place to go for a long scenic walk and enjoy our beautiful City of Cairns.

Interaction with guests

Although we do not live on site, we monitor our Airbnb messages at all times. If there are any issues - just message us and we will do our best to get the issue resolved quickly

Other things to note

Our apartment is a very affordable way to travel – it is not a serviced apartment, nor is it a hotel. The rate we charge per night, when broken down to a cost per guest is very affordable – some times even cheaper than staying in a back packers in a dorm room.

To assist us in keeping the cost low, we do ask for you to please turn off the air conditioning when leaving the property. There is no issue with you using the air conditioning to keep you cool and comfortable – but to run them is very expensive. When you leave for the day, all we ask is that you turn them off.

Unlike a hotel environment, we do not provide daily service. If you wish for extra cleaning, just let us know and we can arrange this at an extra cost. Similarly we do not top up items during you stay such as washing powder, toilet rolls etc.

This is a high density environment and we ask that you respect the neighbours and keep the noise down to a minimum after 10pm. If there is an issue with any of the neighbours, please report this immediately so it can be dealt with quickly. We want to give each of our guests a great environment to enjoy.

Please do not smoke inside the units – smoking is permitted outside.

If there is any maintenance, or if an items is accidently broken – please let us know so we can repair or replace it. Unless we are made aware of an issue, we can not fix it. We want your stay to be as best as possible – so if there is an issue just message me.

We charge a basic cleaning fee of just $60. This is to clean the unit prior to the next guest and have all the linen professionally cleaned. We do ask our guests to please dispose of ALL rubbish in the apartment, including emptying the bins prior to your departure. All dishes are to be washed, dried and put away. We try to keep our costs down so that we can continue to provide good, clean and very affordable accommodation for our guests.

You will be provided with two keys on your arrival. One will be located in the lockbox – which you will be given the access code to. The other will be left on the dining table. If there are not two keys on your arrival, you must notify us immediately. Should two keys not be returned, we must for security purposes have the locks changed. There is a cost of $100 for any lost keys to cover new locks and to have them professionally installed.
