Our 150 year old characterful stone cottage in beautiful Upper Weardale, County Durham sleeps up to 5 people. Located in Westgate village, immediately behind the front street. The local pub micro-brewery serves evening meals (booking required).

Please be aware that due to the age and construction of the cottage, whereby stone floors are laid directly onto the earth, the humidity levels are higher than in modern houses, and you may notice a slight musty smell as a result.

The space

Weardale Cottage can sleep up to 5 persons - there is a double bed and two twin beds, plus a fold-out single bed. The cottage was originally two "one up one down" miners' houses, now joined together. It retains many original features, and has two separate staircases to the bedrooms. The lounge has a multi-fuel stove and the dining room features a solid fuel Rayburn cooker. A small but well equipped kitchen leads off the dining room; and also on the ground floor is the shower room with handbasin and toilet. The double bedroom also has its own ensuite toilet and handbasin.

Please be aware that the stone flagged ground floor can feel cold and therefore guests are advised to bring slippers.

Guest access

From the village there are many scenic walks, along the river Wear or up into the hills. We recommend the walk up into Slitt Woods, following the course of the Middlehope Burn stream. Details of this walk and many others can be found on the 'Discoverweardale' website.

Locally there is the village pub, where they brew their own 'Weard Ale' beer and serve evening meals. Further down the valley is the market town of Stanhope, for a range of shops and facilities, and the excellent Durham Dales centre, for tourist information, arts and crafts and cafe.

Interaction with guests

Guests have the use of the whole house - we are not present during your stay. We can offer guided walking if required, please contact us for further details.

Other things to note

If you book a stay in the winter months, (October through April) you will need to be confident to run the solid fuel appliances - stove and/or Rayburn, to supplement the electric heating.

And don't forget your slippers!

Please note there are no food shops in Westgate village - the closest shop is the co-op in St John's Chapel, which has limited opening hours and is not open on Sunday. For more shops there is Stanhope, 5 miles from Westgate.

The village and the views are amazing, but the house is not so well stocked. We couldn't find any soap, shower gel, sugar or salt. We think these are mandatory for any airbnb house.

Lovely cottage with furniture and stoves in keeping with period of the house. Damp smell as described, but well equipped with warm stove, plenty of fuel, washing machine and drier. If cycling C2C, Please note there is no shop in the village so pick up any provisions you need for breakfast before you get there.

Great location for walking and cycling. Scenery stunning. Lovely cosy, cottage. Good wifi coverage kept teenage son happy. Simple and straight forward arranging with Chris. Good pub opposite with beer brewed on the premises at only £2 a pint ( on a Wednesday)!! Parking a bit tight at the rear but we have a big car and managed ok.

The cottage is located right in the centre of rural Weardale and as such, beautiful views, gorgeous scenery and incredible walks are only minutes away by car. The cottage is lovely - very big with traditional stone floors. I'd recommend bringing a big jumper or blanket for the evening if you want to curl up on the sofa - we didn't feel cold enough to need the heat on but it's nice to feel cosy. There's a small garden out the back with a bench and a whole range of curious birds. While the cottage is right in the middle of the village, it still feels serene and peaceful. We had a large lunch at a pub in Frosterley so didn't sample the Hare & Hounds but it looked popular. Thank you for a lovely stay Chris!

A lovely traditional cottage in a beautiful location, perfectly placed for exploring Weardale and the northern Penines. The kitchen is well equipped, and there are leaflets of local attractions and walk descriptions. The Hare and Hounds pub served good food, just across the road, and it is not far to drive to St Johns Chapel for the Co-op supermarket. A great place to relax and unwind, with plenty of walks from the doorstep. Good communication, and easy car parking.

Chris's place is in a wonderful part of Weardale and ideally placed for walking or cycling tours. 5 people can be easily housed in the lovely former miner's cottage (actually 2 side by side and opened up between them). Some of the cottage could do with some updating but it is full of old charm - not 5 star luxury but perfectly comfortable.
