Welcome to our urban oasis. This custom built straw bale house is one of a kind. The 3’ thick earthen covered walls and natural cedar exterior blends nicely with the environment. The open floorplan flows from living to dining to kitchen with oak floors. A 1/2 bath is next to the 1st floor study/3rd bedrm. The 2 upstairs bedrms have cathedral ceilings with ceiling fans, oak floors, and door to the porch. The upstairs full bath has a footed tub and separate large walk-in shower stall. No garage.

The space

This property is just steps away from the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail that is currently being re-routed due to construction. The temporary route literally goes just a few steps from this property on Hickory Street. This property is environmentally friendly and is not sprayed for insects so you will not be exposed to any harmful chemicals here. You will however have plenty of deer, groundhogs, rabbits, and birds galore that enjoy the wild surroundings. When the owner is home, she has a cat so anyone allergic to cats are hereby warned.

Guest access

Guests can have full use of the house. The owner will have her personal items stored in the basement when guests are here. The pantry is stocked and guests can use spices, oils, etc but are asked to purchase their own main food items.

Interaction with guests

The owner will be out of town when guests are staying. The property will be managed by a professional property manager who's office is less than a mile away on S. Maple St.

Other things to note

There is an exciting major project going on close by. It's called Akron Waterways Renewed and it's a one billion dollar rain collection system to alleviate sewer overflows. They are drilling a 27' wide tunnel from a few hundred feet away towards downtown. Information about the project and a live web-cam can be found on the internet if you search for "Akron Waterways Renewed". The tunnel boring will begin Sept 9 and we don't know if there will be a lot of noise associated with the construction. Here's an article that was in the local paper on 8-15-17 (URL HIDDEN) Since the house has 3' thick walls, there should be little sound inside the house.

The house itself is just amazing with several books about strawbale houses so you can better appreciate this place. The location was perfect for us to use as a base for our two days riding our bikes on the towpath. I would definitely return and have already recommended it to several friends. Thank you for sharing your house.

Awesome access to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park towpath and train for bike riding. Great for families, as we could walk to the station or hop right on the trail literally just steps from the property. A relaxing urban retreat close to Market Street and downtown Akron, but so quiet and serene that you feel like you are in the park!

I'm a real estate broker serving the greater Akron, Ohio area for 33 years. I was born and raised in W. Akron and am familiar with all that Akron has to offer. I now manage three Airbnb sites for owners and have extensive property management experience. My first experience with short term/vacation rentals was on another popular vacation rental site years ago where I listed and managed a condo for the singer/songwriter Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders who is originally from Akron. I enjoy hosting these vacation rentals because I get to meet so many lovely people from all over. I also use this site when I travel. I love old houses and am a founding member of Progress Through Preservation.
