We found and restored these classic retro cinema seats which are a surprisingly comfortable place to sit in the lounge.

Our house is a wonderful oasis in the trendy central Cape Town suburb of Observatory, with two en-suite bedrooms each with a double bed, a quiet and comfortable library with a guest toilet, a large open plan kitchen/lounge, a comfortable outside deck and two off-street parking spaces.

Our home is safe, stylish and welcoming. You’re minutes away from the airport, the city bowl, the V&A Waterfront and the highways and railways to the winelands, the beaches, the suburbs and the Atlantic Seaboard.

The space

Our newly renovated house is part of four semi-detached houses in the old 19th century Cape style. Historic outside, funky inside.

Our house is perfect for local and international tourists, couples, families and business travellers who want to be close to all that Cape Town and the Western Cape have to offer - and parents of students and visiting academics at UCT are equally welcome.

Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and you'll be warm and snuggly with your electric blanket on a chilly Cape Town night.

And on warm days and evenings, our open plan kitchen/lounge/deck is a great space to enjoy a snack, a meal or a drink or two under our magnificent trees.

Guest access

You have exclusive use of the entire house and have access to DSTV (cable TV), WiFi, gas hob cooker, combination microwave/convection oven, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, gas heater and electric blankets .

Interaction with guests

We are based in Johannesburg and the Observatory house is managed by Evelyne Esterhuize and her domestic helper Loka. Evelyne is a good friend of ours who lives a few houses away and who will look after you during your stay. Evelyne or Loka will be available to meet you anytime up to 9pm and for later arrivals they will leave the keys in the key box by the front security gate. I will give you the code to open it when you book.

Other things to note

We share our garbage removal bin with our neighbour next door (Simone at 27 Arnold Street). If you need to replace the dust bin bag in the kitchen, please leave it outside the back door and the cleaner will deal with it when you depart.

Matthews apartment in Observatory is totally awsom and the decorations gives the place the spesial touch. Both Matthew and his host Evelyne was so welkomming and helpful. Evelyn even drove me and my daughter, and all our luggage, over to the nearby house where my son lives, the day we moved out from the apartment. I strongly recommend this place if you are going to stay in Observatory.

Matt's place is fabulous. A true Goldilocks experience where everything is just right. The beds and pillows are just right - not too hard or soft. The space is stylish and modern with a mix of antique charm. The location is central yet quiet. I would stay there again and recommend it to friends.

Matthew's place was really a delight to stay in. The location is very convenient, close to some lovely restaurants and shops, all within walking distance. I was welcomed with a complimentary bottle of wine which was an unexpected touch. The house was clean, well maintained and very obvious care has been taken to ensure that guests are comfortable. The house has every thing one needs. The bedrooms are comfortable with an en-suite shower/toilet, and I was thankful for the electric blanket as it was rather chilly in Cape Town. Likewise the lounge is nice and spacious, and quirky which was different, and once the cold and wind settled down, it was nice to be able to sit on the deck outside in the garden. I will definitely been recommending this spot to anyone I know that will be visiting Cape Town.

We had a great time staying at Matthew’s funky Observatory house. We were met by Eveline who manages the house for Airbnb guests. She was super friendly and helpful. The house is a great spot with a super open area kitchen TV area that leads out onto the wooden deck in the back garden. We loved the cinema chairs and the exposed brick walls – very cool. The bedrooms were clean and comfy and the electric blankets were brilliant as the weather was a bit chilly. The house really is close to everything and the restaurants in Lower Main Road offer plenty of choice. We particularly enjoyed Jerry’s Burger Bar and Honeybun Café. We will definitely be back next time we’re in Cape Town and I recommend this place unreservedly!
