The Casa Mandala neighborhood is great. Whether you want an ice cold beer, or to run to the store for some quick snacks, our hip neighborhood has it all. Casa Mandala is right around the corner from Cafe Deluxe, which serves great health-food.

One of the best things about Puerto Escondido is the availability of transportation. taxis, buses, collectivos (collective vans), and rental car/motorbike services are always around. But being so close to the main strip and popular beaches, your legs can take you wherever you need to go.

Had a great stay with Chris and enjoyed our brief chat. The apartment has a good location, is nice and quiet and has all the basics you need. For the price we paid we were more than happy and are already missing hanging in Puerto. Thanks chris

I was violently assaulted and robbed exactly outside the front door of Casa Mandala. The man stole my purse, which contained my keys to the apartment and my cell phone. Luckily he didn't hurt me more. But what was worse, was the fact that the Airbnb host who let me in (since I was locked out) didn't really care--he didn't even help me call the police, and he didn't offer to change the locks knowing that the assailant had keys to my apartment and knew exactly where I lived. Meanwhile, I feared that the guy would come back to my apartment since he had the keys.... After all of this, I decided to leave Casa Mandala early. When I told the hosts I had to leave early because I felt unsafe there, Chris from Casa Mandala blamed me for the assault and said it was my fault.

Response from Chris And Marine:
Case Mandala is very safe and we’ve never had a robbery or any incident as you can verify from over 150 reviews on Airbnb. Sara was very happy with her stay at Casa Mandala and then she left suddenly before dawn because she said she was robbed in front of our place when walking home alone at 1:30 am, and she no longer felt safe. She said she was robbed and attacked and that he was hitting her repeatedly and that she was screaming like crazy so the attacker fled, and that he took her purse with her keys. So she rang the bell to be let in. Here is what really happened. At 1:30 am in the morning she rang the bell of the front gate. Marcos opened the door and let her in. He said that she was calm and did not appear to have been assaulted in any way. She told him her story about how she walked home and someone followed her and robbed her and hit her right in front of the gate. That didn’t seem right because none of the other guests and none of the neighbors heard any screaming or anything. And the night watchmen from the hotel next door, who was present and just a few feet from the door said that he didn’t see or hear any assault taking place either. Marcos was kind and consoling but also mentioned to her that a woman shouldn’t walk home from the bars at 1:30 am all alone. He didn’t offer to call the police because calling the police at 1:30 in the morning in Puerto Escondido does not make sense. He offered to help her contact the police later in the morning. However when he went to check on her in the morning at 8 am and to change the locks, she was already gone. We asked the other guests about her and the people staying next to her said that several strange things happened with her during her stay involving her purchasing drugs and having a local boyfriend. They said she came and went at all hours of the night and that something weird was going on with her and this boyfriend. What we think really happened is that she had some issues with this boyfriend, perhaps he was violent, and she decided to leave Mexico suddenly. She then made up this story about being robbed in front of our place to break her monthly Airbnb contract and to get the full refund, and also to change her airline tickets without paying extra fees, and who knows what else her reasons were. I would have gladly given her a refund no matter what her reason for leaving early. So really there was no need for all of this. I still don’t understand we she had to make up this story and leave us a bad review. Only she knows.

We stayed for a week at Casa Mandala - and it was a perfect place to enjoy Puerto Escondido and get some much needed R&R. The location of the apartments can't be beat - it's up on the hill, so has an amazing view of the ocean and Zicatela from the roof, but it's only as short 3 block walk to the main beach road, or a 1 block walk to the highway where you can get taxis or public transport. There are tons of restaurants nearby and a great bodega/mini grocery that seems to have everything. Chris and Marine were super nice and communicative. There was a misunderstanding with my arrival time, but once I got a hold of Chris, he came right over to let me in. He was nice enough to put us in a bigger room, and checked on us throughout the week. The room was great - a big open space, not a lot of furniture, but not a lot is needed. The couch was a comfy place to hangout, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the bathroom was large and the shower had hot water (even though you really don't need it here). There was an issue with our toilet, but once Chris and housekeeping found out, they fixed it immediately. They do yoga upstairs on the gorgeous roof. I didn't have a chance to try it out, but seems like a great plus. I'd definitely recommend staying here if you want to be in an excellent location in Zicatela, have easy access to everything, and also be able to spread out and have kitchen access.
