Enjoy open log fires in the sitting room. Eat fresh produce from our farm. Surrounded by Wilkin Flora & Fauna Reserve, famed for native orchids, abundant & rare wildlife. Your horses & dogs are invited to visit. You can walk, fish, canoe, bird, swim and spot platypus! Enjoy eggs from our poultry & produce from our garden.

The space

Tolka Cottage is cosy and comfortable in all seasons. Discreet and private in a quiet location. It is ideal for those who wish to escape from the urban environment, for families, for small groups of friends, for naturalists interested in native flora and fauna and for those who wish to star gaze in our dark night skies. Wake up to native bird song and you may also hear a cockerel or two.
The famed Tolka breakfast ingredients, for a great country breakfast, are included for your first morning – fresh Tolka eggs, bacon, tomatoes, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, homemade Tolka jams & bread made by Ivy, filter coffee & a variety of teas.
There is a formal sitting room and a more informal sunroom. The bedrooms consist of 3 bedrooms consisting of a queen bed, a double bed & 2 single beds made up with top quality bed linen, continental quilts and towels. In addition, they all have electric blankets for those cool winter nights. There is reverse cycle air conditioning for your comfort.
The bathroom has shower & toilet. The laundry has a washing machine & dryer. In addition there is an outside shower & separate toilet. Both bathrooms have good hot water from a gas fired boiler. Tolka Cottage has colour TV, DVD & stereo/CD player, interesting books & games.

Guest access

You are encouraged to walk around and enjoy the farm at Tolka. The Glenelg River (which flows through the adjacent Wilkin Floral Reserve) runs through the property, the beautiful river valley with its over hanging trees, provides dappled shade for great swimming, canoeing and wildlife watching. It is a lovely spot to enjoy a gourmet picnic hamper, made to order, full of local goodies put together by Ivy. The picnics consist of as much produce from Tolka and its immediate vicinity as possible, depending on tastes and on the season.
The farm has a circular track, a mile long, through 60 acres of unspoilt bush, providing easy access to the flora and fauna of this area. Others may prefer to follow one of the many wild animal paths and do a bit of tracking and/or some foraging . There is always the chance of spotting a fallow deer.
The Glenelg River provides suitable habitat for one of the most extraordinary creatures on earth - the platypus (an animal that lays eggs). Good time for viewing is around dusk.
The Cottage has a dog proof garden and you are welcome to bring your dogs. We also have secure dog pens if you wish to avail of them. Food & water bowls can be provided, if required. Please supply a current vaccination certificate prior to arrival.
The Cottage has an outdoor entertaining area with a gas barbeque and, in winter and outside fire restriction periods, guests may light fires for picnics on the property.
If you wish to travel to Tolka with your horses, you are welcome to do so. There are horse paddocks, yards and stables all available at no extra cost, during your stay. If you wish to leave your horse here for some days before or afterwards: Horse agistment/boarding facilities can be provided for $15 per day in yards and $20 per day in stable. Horse health certificates for tetanus/strangles & worming must be current and supplied in advance of arrival.

Interaction with guests

Our house is near Tolka Cottage, but far enough away to be unobstrusive, so we are available if you need us.
We are food mad and love our home grown produce. It is our philosophy that we should produce as much of our own food at home as possible. Guests may freely harvest their choice of vegetables from the garden for their own use and buy duck, geese and hen eggs when available and other homemade delights. Also, we usually have a large range of dried fruits and preserves for sale. If you are interested, you can learn how to catch yabbies (fresh water crayfish) for your supper in the dams.
If you wish to find out more, just contact Ivy and she will be happy to help you.

Other things to note

Tolka Cottage is adjacent to a beautiful billabong, sometimes full of water and sometimes dry depending on the weather. Kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and koalas are regularly seen on the farm. The area is a bird watchers paradise and over 140 species of birds have been seen on Tolka in recent years, including the spectacular endangered red tailed black cockatoo.
You may fish on the Glenelg River that runs through Tolka.
If you have children, be aware that there are dams, waterholes and billabongs (oxbow lakes), as well as a river, on this property.

A beautiful, secluded hideaway where you can escape the world for a bit. The cottage was so comfortable and cosy and the surrounds just beautiful. We had no mobile or data reception (we're with Optus and Vodafone) but that suited us fine - it was so great to unplug from the world for a night. Ivy generously provided everything we needed, including a great breakfast. We had a wonderful stay. Just a tip: follow Ivy's directions and follow the signs to Tolka Stud! (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) maps took us to the right side of the river but wanted us to go down the 'Camel Track' which isn't passable unless you have a 4wd I'm guessing. Watch out for wildlife if you're driving at dusk also.

We had a wonderful time at the Cottage and enjoyed the walks and scenery that's just outside the back door. The beds are generous and there is a full kitchen with a nice array of treats for breakfast. I'd recommend bringing some boots you don't mind getting wet so you can really explore the river. Ivy's directions that she texted us were spot on, but we chose to follow the gps that really did require a 4x4 to manage. Thanks for a lovely stay.

The house is in a great location for those who appreciate nature. Ideal place to go walking or for a run. The house is very private and spacious. Ivy did a great job decorating the place (for Christmas) and provided excellent produce for breakfast. The only downside was the noise made by the cockerels - but that is part being on a farm. Overall great experience.

We had a fabulously relaxing three nights in Ivy's Tolka Stud cottage. The cottage is lovely, spacious, and very comfortable. Gorgeous and plentyful breakfast supplies, thank you Ivy! The cottage is in a quite remote spot - and totally private. While Ivy's house is not far, you can't actually see it at all from the cottage. There are chickens, ducks, geese, horses, there's the river, paddocks to walk the dogs in. We saw lots of wild emu's (one had three chicks) birds, kangaroos, lizards. We took a day out to go to the Naracoorte Caves and to do some more exploring in the region. Highly recommended!

A peaceful and quaint lodge right smacked in the middle of a working farm with plenty of space for our dog to run around. Was greeted with a fully equipped kitchen and everything else was in place for us to get immersed with the surroundings and environment that had certainly stood out. Couldn't recommend this place more and Ivy's hospitality takes it to the next level. A stay to remember.

Originally from Ireland, horses are in my blood. I worked with them all my life, firstly with showjumpers and latterly with thoroughbred race horses. A lover of all wildlife, in particular of birds and of the natural environment. Unable to live without dogs. Passionate about good quality home produced food. Maker of bread, grower of vegetables and fruit, breeder of hens, geese and ducks. We love having guests who share our interests and to treat them to our little piece of heaven on earth.
