Overlooking the terracotta rooftops of Amari Village and a valley of unspoiled natural beauty, Villa Samitos is an ideal base to explore the undiscovered Crete. It is a great spot for anyone who wishes to get away from the crowded touristic areas, yet being close enough to visit them. Carrying a family history of 150 years, the stone building has been fully restored offering peace, comfort and spectacular views.

The space

Villa Samitos is part of a traditional, stone-built complex, being once the owner’s grandparents home. It started about 1.5 century ago, as a typical residence of Cretan farmers with just one room, storage and a small patio for a donkey and a few goats, but gradually expanded as the family was growing. It used to be the place where the owner spent every summer holiday of his childhood, with “papou” and “giagia” (grandpa and grandma). Today an engineer, he has restored the building for the sake of those sweet summers and transformed it into a holiday home.

Amari is a delightful, living, traditional village in the heart of Crete, enjoying a unique, direct environment of excellent climate. The property is set at the top of the village, with marvellous views across the rooftops and away across the valley to the mighty Mount Idi. The elegant traditional furnishing and the family’s handmade embroidery form a relaxing blend of calm and comfort. Staying here, one can feel the natural tranquillity as the scene is completed by the clear, transparent atmosphere and the sounds of nature.

The villa can accommodate 9 people in an area of 180sqm, with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The capacity may be extended to 10 people, on request.
Free Wi-Fi and full air conditioning (in every room) is included. The house is very ample and has a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and living room with fireplace. Flat screen TV with DVD/home cinema and CD player (iPod compatible) is provided.
Two terraces and one shaded veranda, all of them private, offer astonishing views of the village and the valley. On the main terrace, there is also a comfortable dining area. Watching the Mount Idi turning red during sunset and the moon rising over the valley is an unforgettable experience.

COOKING SERVICE of local cuisine is offered exclusively for our guests, on request. Mrs. Rumy, the housekeeper, will introduce you to a healthy and delicious Cretan diet, with recipes that are totally homemade, using olive oil and fresh, seasonal products only, from the village and the close area.

A WELCOME TREAT with local and home made goods and wine will be waiting for you, upon arrival.
Regular changing of linen/towels and all cleaning services are included.

FOR KIDS (…and adults), you’ll find toys, games, books, music and movies. For babies, we offer baby-cots and high-chairs, free of charge.

For your better INFORMATION, we will provide maps and book guides for the entire area and our personal recommendations about food, daily trips, events and places of interest.

PRIVATE PICNIC AREA: Located in the nearby fields, the family owned “aloni” (threshing yard) is one of the last remaining in the area. Just a few minutes walk away from the villas, it is waiting for you to have a picnic under the shade of a giant oak tree.

Guest access

The guests have full access to the entire villa, no matter the group size, including the terraces and the garden.

Interaction with guests

Manolis, the owner, is on site upon arrival to welcome the guests, introduce the villa to them and hand the keys. Mrs Rumy, the housekeeper, is always available to assist if a problem occurred.
Full information about the villa, the area, the food and the available events and activities are forwarded by e-mail to the guests in advance, before arrival. The most reliable maps of Crete are available in the villa and the guests are free to use them during their explorations.
Moreover, the owner provides further recommendations in person and would be happy to share with the guests the history of the house, his family and the Amari Village. The owner lives in Rethymnon city but he drops by every 2 or 3 days and also the guests may contact him anytime on mobile or email for questions, tips and anything else that could be helpful to them. Sometimes, he also guides the guests personally to unknown places nearby, like the 13th century byzantine temples which are hidden in the fields.

Villa Samitos belongs to the owner’s family for the last 150 years and carries the history of many beloved persons like his grandparents. From the first time, when it was just a single, humble room, the house had an open door for neighbors and visitors and became the constant meeting point for many joyful gatherings of the local community, through the years.
Wishing to maintain this valuable heritage, the owner has decorated the villa with unique pieces of embroidery made by the hands of his mother and grandmother and also has kept some of the antique objects and furniture of the original house. These pieces keep alive the character of the house and make the guests feel nice and relaxed. On the other hand, the guests are kindly requested just to show the reasonable care and respect, as almost anything else could be replaced, except these items.
No other rules or restrictions would be necessary, just common sense; the guests are invited to feel “at home” and simply to enjoy their stay.
The garden is small, but has many flowers, aromatic herbs and a few trees. The guests may feel free to pick some rosemary for cooking or almonds, lemons and pomegranates, provided they would think of the forthcoming visitors too.
Also, the guests are encouraged to put all recyclable materials in the special bins provided at the property. The owner takes care to carry them to the nearest collection station.
The owner or the housekeeper has to irrigate the plants regularly, depending on the weather conditions. Every effort has been made for the minimum possible disturbance, however, the guests may ask of any different schedule that would be convenient for them.
This villa might not be suitable for people of restricted mobility. Please, check with the owner.

We enjoyed our stay in Villa Samitos very much. The villa is beautifully renovated, spacious and the view from the terraces towards the mountains is fantastic. Several nice gorge walks are within easy driving distance, and the south coast beaches are not far away either. Manolis was very helpful when greeting us, explaining all the practicalities and giving valuable suggestions for tours in the area. Mrs Roumy, the housekeeper, lives next door and will prepare and deliver meals upon request. The arrangement is extremely convienient (especially since there is no taverna in the village), mrs Roumy is an excellent cook and very accomodating. If you plan to do your own cooking be prepared to bring some stuff yourself, since the kitchen is a bit empty on normal utility items. Also there is no outside barbecue available.

The Villa Amari is a beautiful restoration. The rooms are cleverly laid out for maximum visitors and max privacy. Very comfortable. Manolis is a great host who has lots to offer if he is asked. Our last day he took us up to the top of one of the immense rock mountains for a view of the entire valley. Mrs. Roumy, the housekeeper, is helpful and a great cook. Don't miss any of her "menu" offerings. A very enjoyable stay. Alice P, Sebastopol, CA USA
