Kandy Hill House is a modern, western style bungalow in the hills of Kandy overlooking the Mahaweli river and with vistas of the misty mountains. Just 5 km from the Peredeniya Botanical gardens and 10 kms from the centre of Kandy, it's an ideal location to visit the cultural triangle.

The space

Kandy Hill House is only 11 kms from the centre of Kandy but enjoys a beautiful rural setting. High on a hill, the house offers stunning views of the mountains and the Mahaweli river can be seen below. On a clear day you can see Adam's Peak. It is a very restful place to spend some time.

Guest access

Guests booking the entire house have exactly that: The use of 3 bedrooms, fitted kitchen with all necessary equipment, split level living room, terrace and balcony and the terraced garden full of flowers and fruit trees.

Interaction with guests

The house is offered on a self catering basis but our gardener lives on the premises in separate accommodation. He is on hand to lend assistance as is our manager. If you want meals prepared for you we can arrange a cook / maid at a small extra cost.

Other things to note

We can supply a driver who is experienced at mountain driving and can take you to the house with no worries. Contact us to arrange your airport pick up and travel arrangements in Sri Lanka.

Peter was an exceptional host for us at Kandy Hill house, and the house itself was perfect for our family stay over Christmas 2014. Ahead of time Peter arranged a driver for our travels before and after Kandy, and also a cook. He kept in touch by phone with the driver, the cook and the caretaker to make sure we were OK. The cook turned out to be a treasure. One of our party had some food allergies and the cook was able to cater for them perfectly, as well as the rest of us. The house itself is a three bedroom villa near the top of a steep driveway and it looks out over the surrounding hills. The house description does explain clearly that the location is outside Kandy and not in the city - if you want to be in the city then you would need to find a hotel there, but if you want a peaceful haven to return to then this is a great place. If you are not used to Sri Lanka then you also need to know that roads are very congested and travel in most places, both in and out of the towns, takes four times longer than expected. Depending on the time of day it can take up to an hour to get into Kandy from this house and if you don't have your own driver you should also have a map showing how to come back. So if you want a base from which to explore the surrounding hill country, or just want a peaceful place where you can relax for a few days, we can recommend this place, and the host was wonderful.

comparing with the rest airbnb houses we have booked, this one is expensive with old fashioned furniture. It is not clean and far away from the city center with nothing to walk around. The path is very high and we were all exhausted after taking all belongs up. The only good point is the view in the morning.... But still too expensive and not valuable at all, they even asked our driver to pay for the accommodation which is the only time during our trip in this country. So will never recommend anyone try this.

Response from Peter:
We are sad the guest did not have a good experience at our home. We know the road to the house is steep. That is why it is called Kandy hill house. We tried to contact them several times and offered to arrange for a driver who would happily drive up the hill and stay free of charge, but no reply. In our description of the place we state that it is approx 9km from Kandy city centre. The furniture was new approx 4 years ago, made in local style by local craftsmen. I had my staff clean the place. Unfortunately I was not there myself to check the standards. Regarding the price, a whole house with 3 bedrooms, garden, lounge kitchen etc for 6 guests for $125 ($20 each) does not sound expensive to me. It would cost that for one room in a hotel. I would strongly recommend that Airbnb customers check to see exactly what is offered by places offering accommodation at lower prices than this. Finally, guests booking through airbnb should be aware that it is NOT a site for 5 star hotels.

I am a retired university lecturer. I retired to Sri Lanka with my Sri Lankan wife in 2009 so I know the country quite well. If you would like any advice about travelling here just ask.
We love our home in the hills near Kandy but we sometimes need to be in Colombo or U.K. for a while. Therefore we let out our mountain home to guests. We love it there and we are sure you will. We just hope you care for as home the same way you would care for your own.
