The main cottage is the heart of the property. The living/kitchen/eating area and narrow, long bedroom are on the main floor and the bathroom is downstairs.
Share meals, reading, game time and planning of outings. With a full-sized bed in the bedroom and a futon couch in the living room, four guests can easily all sleep in the cottage.
The separate sleeping cabin, with a futon and bunk bed, gives privacy to guests. Note: there is no electricity or plumbing in the sleeping cabin.
I am willing to consider well-behaved dogs who have been fully treated for fleas and ticks. Please check with me if you plan to bring a dog. I am also willing to consider a larger group. Again, please check with me. I need the names and contact information of all adult guests.
Cell phone coverage is spotty in this part of Maine. Texting is most sure. Most guests report that they can usually read and respond to their emails, but that internet searches are iffy unless they are in Ellsworth or Bar Harbor.
I keep a fiberglass two-person kayak and a plastic ocean kayak on the premises which you may use at your own risk. These are optional items, and they are special to me, so I ask that you treat them with great care. (There are rocks in the pond and along the cove which rip holes in fiberglass.) Please bring your own life vests so you will have the proper size and fit.
Interaction with guests
Because I live in Massachusetts, I am available only by phone or text -- usually text is most sure. I have a wonderful caretaker, who has a full-time job but is happy to address issues when he gets home from his job. If anything breaks or is lost or accidentally damaged, please let me know asap so I can help address the problem. I rely on my trust and faith in my guests to make this work. That helps keep potential charges for repairs to an absolute minimum, which is good for everyone!
Other things to note
Bring your own linens and towels so you won't be held up by the world's smallest and slowest washer and dryer! They are there for small loads of things you urgently need to wash, but they can't manage all the bedding and towels from a stay!
Most of my guests don't like to pay cleaning costs, but would rather leave the place spotless and beautiful for the next guest. I am delighted to hire a cleaner or to return your cleaning deposit in full if my cleaner has no work to do -- but I have to know in advance which way you plan to go. If you are going to clean it perfectly yourself, let me know if you want a checklist. It will take up to seven days to return all of or some of the cleaning deposit.
All the basic cookware, utensils, and plates are there, but if you have special kitchen utensils and appliances you especially need to use, check with me so that you can bring it with you if need be.
Smoking and partying, including any illegal behavior must happen elsewhere. The fireplace cannot be used, nor are outdoor fires encouraged. Please supply me with the names and contact information of all adults who will be staying here. Please be responsible and respectful of the premises and neighbors, treating them as you would want yours to be treated. Please help keep our environmental impact low with your use of resources, such as water, heat and electricity.
I am the mother of two wonderful and nearly grown daughters, and also an elementary school teacher, a candy maker and a cook-turned-co-director of a wonderful camp for people with and without disabilities. I love to take long walks with my dogs, generally while listening to an audiobook or podcast. I love listening to stories! My list of things I need to do and want to do and hope to do someday is always too long, but I prefer that to feeling like I don't know what to do with myself. I recently helped both my parents at the ends of their lives. I am trying to understand all the lessons of that experience, but one thing is for sure: I need to take time each day to enjoy all the blessings and challenges of life!
