The living room opens onto the kitchen. The dining/working banquette is original to the main house circa 1955.South- and east-facing windows in the living room look onto the expansive yard with orchard and established shrubs and garden...and frequently bunnies and deer, too.

Walking distance to Lake Padden and close to Western, this bright, private one-bedroom apartment makes a quiet, lovely getaway. Built in 1960 with hardwood floors throughout, its big windows showcase mature landscaping, including decades-old rhododendrons, azaleas, spindleberry, and fruit trees. Inside, handmade quilts, stained glass, and original wood paneling give it a cozy, comfortable feel. Enjoy a breakfast of coffee, tea, yogurt, and homemade granola. Guests of all backgrounds are welcome.

The space

Lily Cottage was originally built as a mother-in-law unit. According to neighborhood lore, it later became the workplace of the original homeowner, a horticultural geneticist, to develop new strains of lilies—hence the name. Now, with freshly refinished hardwood floors and modern amenities like wifi, cable TV, and 570 threadcount sheets, it's a delightfully peaceful and pleasant getaway.

Access to Lily Cottage is around the side of the main house; there are a few shallow stairs up the walk, but no stairs inside the apartment. The living area has couch, dining, and a small kitchen, where you'll find French press coffee, tea, and homemade granola, along with dishes and a few cooking implements—if you intend to cook during your stay, please check in with us about what you might need.

A pocket door separates the living area from the bedroom and connected bathroom, which contains a stall shower (no tub). There is a TV in the bedroom with cable and several premium channels, including HBO, Starz, and Cinemax; there's also strong wifi (10 up / 100 down).

Guest access

You're welcome to use the back yard, with a picnic table, play structure, and hammock swinging between the two apple trees (in summer, obviously). Or head down to Lake Padden, one mile away, for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking.

Interaction with guests

We are a family of four living in the main house, which shares a wall (the back of a closet) with Lily Cottage but does not connect. Both adults work from home, so we're around if you have any issues or needs. We have a hands-off attitude and won't bother you, but we enjoy company, so if you're looking for a glass of wine and conversation, we're right here.

Other things to note

The quilts in the cottage were hand-sewn by my grandmother, who always said heirlooms are meant to be used, not hidden away in a closet. That said, if you happen to spill something, please do let us know rather than just letting it go.

Great location and easy access to everything in Bellingham! Comfortable stay here and it had what we needed while we visited with our son. Our daughter enjoyed seeing the Mama and baby deer and watching the chickens! Loved the large window out to the back where we could see the "wildlife".

Heidi and Bryce are awesome! We got in late but were able to spend some time chatting with them on their porch about nearby places to grab a bite to eat and hang out. When they realized it was pretty late and most places in town would be closed, they offered a bottle of wine to us and a couple of our friends and gave us extra chairs to hang out on the outdoor patio. The cottage was easy to find, easy to get into (they customized the lock code number for us so it would be easy to remember and get into) was a cozy spot and had everything we needed. All in all, a great place to stay in Bellingham and definitely would go back if we need a place to crash before or after a North Cascades Hike.

The cottage was very comfortable, large, and was well stocked with everything needed to cook nice meals and spend time with my family now living in Bellingham. It was perfect for what I was looking to accomplish on this trip.

Bellingham is a great base place to explore this far corner of the country. Heidi's cottage offers a homey and quiet place to stay under the trees and amongst a garden setting. It's also a perfect location to support personal business in the area. You'll find vintage and charming features, mixed with modern features that match anyone's - especially the great internet.
