Walking distance to Lake Padden and close to Western, this bright, private one-bedroom apartment makes a quiet, lovely getaway. Built in 1960 with hardwood floors throughout, its big windows showcase mature landscaping, including decades-old rhododendrons, azaleas, spindleberry, and fruit trees. Inside, handmade quilts, stained glass, and original wood paneling give it a cozy, comfortable feel. Enjoy a breakfast of coffee, tea, yogurt, and homemade granola. Guests of all backgrounds are welcome.
Lily Cottage was originally built as a mother-in-law unit. According to neighborhood lore, it later became the workplace of the original homeowner, a horticultural geneticist, to develop new strains of lilies—hence the name. Now, with freshly refinished hardwood floors and modern amenities like wifi, cable TV, and 570 threadcount sheets, it's a delightfully peaceful and pleasant getaway.
Access to Lily Cottage is around the side of the main house; there are a few shallow stairs up the walk, but no stairs inside the apartment. The living area has couch, dining, and a small kitchen, where you'll find French press coffee, tea, and homemade granola, along with dishes and a few cooking implements—if you intend to cook during your stay, please check in with us about what you might need.
A pocket door separates the living area from the bedroom and connected bathroom, which contains a stall shower (no tub). There is a TV in the bedroom with cable and several premium channels, including HBO, Starz, and Cinemax; there's also strong wifi (10 up / 100 down).
You're welcome to use the back yard, with a picnic table, play structure, and hammock swinging between the two apple trees (in summer, obviously). Or head down to Lake Padden, one mile away, for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiking.
Interaction with guests
We are a family of four living in the main house, which shares a wall (the back of a closet) with Lily Cottage but does not connect. Both adults work from home, so we're around if you have any issues or needs. We have a hands-off attitude and won't bother you, but we enjoy company, so if you're looking for a glass of wine and conversation, we're right here.
Other things to note
The quilts in the cottage were hand-sewn by my grandmother, who always said heirlooms are meant to be used, not hidden away in a closet. That said, if you happen to spill something, please do let us know rather than just letting it go.
