Our beautiful cob cottage is a work of art and a labour of love!
Handmade from all from untreated hardwood timbers and stomped clay, sand and straw, our cob cottage is the perfect getaway spot.
Hidden below our “help yourself” vege garden and orchard, it is buttressed by a stand of totara and native bush tha's home to a range of birdlife.
Private and peaceful, it is like taking a trip back to a simpler time.

The space
Tara Retreat is a developing and evolving glamping and eco accommodation space that includes our stunning Cob Cottage - which was lovingly handcrafted over a 12 day workshop and then countless hours of oiling the wood and rendering the inside and out by hand with lime and earth plasters. You can cook in the shared communal kitchen and BBQ area, where you can also play boardgames or meet new friends. The cob cottage uses a separate gas shower and compost toilet block to complete a comfy glamping experience.

We also have a self-contained studio and a caravan for rent if you have some mates who want to stay as well. Both are listed on AirBnB.

Guest access
Own private area around the cob cottage but guests are welcome to wander the gardens and help yourself to seasonal fruit & vegetables and discover the meditation deck in the bush behind. Enjoy the communal kitchen & BBQ area with board games, disc golf chains & swing ball.

Other things to note
The cob cottage itself is fairly private but please be aware Tara Retreat is a retreat property - and there may be extra cars and people here attending yoga classes and natural health consults on other parts of the property.
There is no power - nights are by lanterns, candles and moonlight and books, wines and conversation or board games and cards replace the TV.
BUT you can get wifi and there are power points in the outdoor kitchen for charging phones or computers or at the house if you prefer. There is also a one charge phone charger provided in the cob cottage.
Spider webs on the outside are hard to keep off entirely -we do live in a rural/bush in sub-tropical Northland and do not use chemical pesticide deterrents of any kind (we use peppermint spray ).
A lot of guests find they have the best ever restorative sleeps cocooned in the cob.
Cob guests use an excellent gas shower in a converted garden shed and a compost toilet, which we clean and monitor daily. It has been a very interesting learning curve dealing with “humanure” in a more environmentally friendly way a great teaching in waste versus resource and the fact “there is no away”.
If your favourite holiday was on a cruise, then the cob cottage may not be for you.

Location

Mangawhai, Northland, New Zealand

There is tons to do around Mangawhai - there are loads of stunning surf beaches within 20 minutes (Mangawhai Heads, Te Arai, Langs Beach, Waipu Cove) and the Mangawhai Estuary is great for swimming, fishing, paddle-boarding and kayaking. There are long and short bush and coastal walks (including our favourite nearby waterfall walk) and a bunch of wineries that put n tastings and music over summer. A few kilometres away is the Mangawhai Village where you can find the popular Saturday morning artisan market, Bennetts chocolate factory & shop, an art gallery, Coolectibles retro shop, cafes and the Mangawhai Tavern, which puts on bands and events and serves food and beverages overlooking the estuary. Our town also boasts the community-built Mangawhai Activity Zone with big skatebowls, tennis courts (we have racquets available), playground and outdoor gym.
