The Pearl of Whakatiwai. A completely restored Bed/kitchen/dining room with separate shower and toilet. This house was built in the 50's and so we have lovingly recreated the whole 50's vibe for your enjoyment. Right on the edge of the Firth of Thames you can lie in bed and see the views that go on forever. A great little kitchen with new oven and fridge, plus all the tools you need if you want a "foodie" get away.

Great fishing right on your doorstep.

The space
You can invite friends and whanau to stay in the other large room of our house (see separate Airbnb listing for The Old New Whakatiwai Fishing Lodge), and make it a great place for a get together.
We provide you with tea, coffee (flat whites on request), milk, butter, fresh fruit and a loaf of homemade wholemeal bread. If the chickens are behaving, also super fresh eggs!

Guest access
We have a large garden area, an olive grove on the waters edge plus the use of an outdoor shower. If you want to go fishing there is plenty of room to park your boat and you can launch it right in front of the Lodge. Oh did I mention there is a reasonable herb garden that you can use? Bay leaves, thyme, sage, rosemary & parsley. Also celery, silverbeet & spinach - plus a fully laden lemon tree for your culinary pleasure.

Other things to note
We share the driveway with local Iwi Ngati Paoua so that they can access the Urupa which is just behind our house. The beach is pretty ok for swimming but best at high tide. Remember to bring rubber shoes as the beach is made up of sand & shells and Kaiaua stones.

Whakatiwai, New Zealand

Kaiaua and Whakatiwai are unique for the seabirds and fishing. It is a Ramsar site which means that the area is treasured and protected for the unusual stone and sand seabed. The Siberian Godwits fly all the way from, well, Siberia to come here each spring. There is a cycle trail that has nearly reached Kaiaua - it's currently stuck at the Taramaire Bird Sanctuary which is a fabulous place to visit. The Pub is great and does good "pub grub", the Fish & Chip shop is famous and was voted in the top three in NZ earlier this year. And The Pink Shop provides all sorts of yummy treats including the famous Kapiti Icecream....mmmmm.

Am a rabid reader, mediocre gardener, slightly chaotic DIY'er, but am at least enthusiastic. I live in the main house at Whakatiwai with my wonderful son, Hunter, who is on the autistic spectrum and who recently obtained a Degree and so am a very proud mother. We love to travel and recently stayed in many Airbnb's in the UK which was fantastic and a great guide for do's and don'ts! Life motto? Nihil bastardus carborundrum.

During your stay
We live at the property with Shep the old faithful dog and Julius the young and curious kitty. We are pretty low key though and happy to provide tips or insights - or just to remain ever so quiet.
