The space

The house is in a very quiet and safe neighborhood - we have not locked our doors in 12 years. The Olomana Room (named after a mountain nearby) is a private room with a brand new Queen bed. The bathroom is right in the room (like in a hotel), it is yours and only yours, shower, sink, shelves, and commode. A swimming pool, large lanais (porches), gardens await you. Lots of large windows throughout the house. The place hosts a large well equipped kitchen, wifi, high ceilings, Air Conditioning and more. For the adventurous or those who like to kick back and lounge around the pool. Many guests have started with hikes to waterfalls, stand up paddling, kayaking, and then settled into lounging around the pool.
Upon request you can rent bicycles, stand up paddleboards, kayaks, surfboard, or body boards. Stand Up Paddleboards (one 11', one 9.5') for $15/day/one or $25/day/two. Rent for 3 or more days and you get a 305 discount. Bicycles (3 mt, one youth mt. bike), There is only one surfboard, a 9'3", and it rents for $15/day. Kayaks (one person and a two person, same rate) are $20/day for one and $30/day for two. I have carpet pads and straps to put them on your rental car w no scratches. Bikes are $10/day pp for 1 day, $8/day pp for 2 days, $6/day pp for 3-7 days. Body boards are $4/day or 2 for $7/day. Always willing to work out a package deal if you want bikes and kayaks, or any combo - the more items and more days, the better the deal.
So you can bike to get coffee, shop, or go to the beach. Or you might want to put the kayaks on top of your car and paddle to the nearby Flat Island off Kailua Beach or the twin Mokulua Islands off Lanikai Beach, both minutes nearby. You are very likely to see sea turtles as you paddle; take your camera. Be sure to stop at the famous Kalapawai Market for coffee and snacks.

Guest access

Guests have parking right in front of the house. Guests have access to large kitchen, dining, and living rooms, porches, swimming pool, laundry facilities. In your room is a flat screen TV w plenty of DVDs (most guests know how to use the TV but if you de-program it then I sometimes cannot reconfigure it). There is a large kitchen, you will have half a large fridge for you, your own dishes and utensils, storage cupboards for your food.
Access to BBQ grill. The guests also have access swimming pool and lanai by the pool, the hammocks in the Buddha Garden in the back, and the laundry in the main house (use once per 4 days stay please, conserve water and electricity, 3rd most expensive in the world, highest in US). You have free use of yoga mats, blocks & bolsters. I will provide bath towels, beach towels, daypack, cooler w blu ice packs, and beach mats.

Interaction with guests

In the house there is only myself and my 14 year old daughter, Lili, lives with me half-time. I used to rent out the 2 rooms, but I have had such a good time w Airbnb guests, I am interested in renting these rooms out to Airbnb only. However, I work a lot when in town, and travel at least one week per month. So when I am in the house you will see me in mornings, and a bit on weekends when I am not out bicycling, hiking, or doing yoga. Lili and I will play ukulele or mbira for you if you wish. On one night you stay, we have a tradition of making homemade ice cream, healthy style w coconut milk, or decadent w cream, and fruit of your choice. I have loads of guide books, maps, and brochures on things to do: everything from the Mokulua Islands, Byodo-In Temple, to Polynesian Cultural Center, to snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and more...

Other things to note

We also rent "The Sunroom" on Airbnb, and seem to host a lot of Europeans. They will have their own bathroom, so you will have yours. So on occasion you might share the pool with those guests. The large second refrigerator is shared half/half with the other guests when they are present.

1. Park in front of this house, on this side of street, between my mailbox and the neighbors driveway, leave enough room for another car.
2. No smoking please.
3. Quiet Hours 10 PM - 9 AM.
4. Close and latch the gate when not using gate. TO OPEN GATE reach through the moon cutout, feel above and slide latch to left to open. I do not lock the main house (have not for 14 years) so come and go as you please, but do latch gate. As you enter/leave, Please be quiet as it is a quiet neighborhood and everyone has their windows open to take in the fresh air and the scent of flowers. So sound outside comes inside with the floral scents. You have a key for your room.
5. No candles or open flame of any kind.
6. PLEASE do your own dishes, AND PUT THEM AWAY REGULARLY so the rest of us have room to put ours in drying rack. There are plenty of clean dish towels in the lowest cupboard to the right of the sink. Use them at will.
Clean the stove with Simple Green, provided on counter at left of stove, after each use, rags in laundry room
7. Put all food away in airtight containers - bug control is critical in the tropics. There are plenty for guest use in a labeled cupboard.
8. LEAVE THE BEACH AT THE BEACH. Please shake out towels and mats at the beach, do not bring home the sand, we have enough already. Use the hose on the SW corner of the house to rinse off feet (to right of front door).
9. The washer and dryer are for your use, but within reason: once (2 loads) per 4 days max. Hawaii has the highest electricity rates in the US and the 3rd highest in the world. Our electric bill is $350/mo without using air-conditioning . Please try to conserve. Water is also very expensive, conservation is appreciated.
AMENITIES: Shared use (half) a large refrigerator and the kitchen. You have a designated cupboard for your dishes (which are light green ceramic) on the left, above the coffee counter. Below on the left you have your own drawer with silverware that is unique to distinguish it from others. The other cupboards that are labeled contain the pots/pans/cooking utensils for your use. We have plenty of cooking oil, spices, and condiments for you ready.
We provide bath towels, beach towels, beach mats, daypack, wifi, umbrellas, maps, and guidebooks gratis. We RENT 4 bicycles w locks, 2 standup paddle boards, 2 kayaks, 2 bodyboards and a surfboard. If you do rent the bicycles, do not ride them in the ocean, nor on the beach. Lock them up with the locks provided - you are responsible for their safety as well as your own. Do not ride on sandy beach. We do have a few helmets available. PLEASE clean the bikes after use (use simple green in garage). The KAYAKS AND ALL GEAR should be RINSED THOROUGHLY on the lawn to the south of the garage, before putting away. Use the hose on the SW corner of the house just outside your room's bay window.

Tomas has a stunning home and it is evident that he has really put in work to make it an oasis. He has everything you need! We were there for one month and loved our stay, from doing yoga poolside, to the quiet reprieve the neighborhood is from any noise. The location, Kailua, is also great with weekly farmers markets and easy access to the beach which is a 10 minute drive away. Thank you Tomas!

This place was just as described by Thomas. It was a nice place to stay for about 8 days. Lanikai beach was only 5-10mins away by car; we rented his two-people kayak for $15 and he was very helpful all the time. I would come back to his place if we ever were going to visit Kailua again. Thank you Thomas!

The location is super, a few minutes from Kailua Beach and Lanikai, about two minutes from downtown Kailua, and the same from Kam Highway. Nice, quiet street. Doors always unlocked but there is a key for your room. If you want to rent bikes, kayaks, etc, probably should set that up when you check in or ask Thomas the best way to reach him. He's often not there or is but not accessible, the way the house is laid out. He is good at responding to cell phone messages and texts.

There were so many things that went wrong with my stay at Thomas's home, but the most important thing you should know before booking with him is that my personal items were stolen while I was staying in his home. He chose to take no responsibility for it and refused to refund any of my money for the time that I did not stay with him because of checking out early due to feeling unsafe and uncomfortable staying in his home. The question I have for Thomas is this: How would you feel if your daughter were staying somewhere and she felt the need to leave early due to safety and comfort issues? Thomas is proud of the fact that he never locks his doors, which may very well be why my things were stolen. In addition to his never locking his doors he also keeps keys to each of the guest rooms out in the open and labeled for each room. So, even though you have a locked door the keys are out in the open for anyone to use and his house doors are wide open. In addition to this issue, which would be enough for me to never recommend this location there were many other problems during my stay. To begin, my room was not clean when I arrived and was not ready for me until late in the evening. The vent in my room was covered in dust and grime, so much so that it was hanging from the vent. I was woken the first morning I was there to Thomas vacuuming right outside my door at 7:30am. His house rules say that quiet hours are from 10pm-9am, but apparently that doesn't apply to him. When I got up I was told that he had people coming to appraise his house, which is why he was cleaning and that they would need to get in my room. The pool was absolutely filthy while I was there. It looks like it has been severely neglected and was full of dead palm leaves. As well, much of the furniture outdoors was in terrible condition. I actually fell through one of his outdoor chairs the second day I was there and bruised my legs and arms. One night I was there as I was getting ready for bed I heard loud screaming within the house. I came out of my room to find the other guest who was staying there screaming and spraying a can of Raid all over the bathroom trying to kill a roach. This screaming went on for nearly 10 minutes and she sprayed toxic chemicals all over the place. One morning as I was sitting outside in the back yard I was startled by someone coming through the back gate covered in pest control gear (they were wearing what was like a hazmat suit with a breathing apparatus). He said he was there to spray for bugs and that I should stay away from the...

Cozy house in quiet neighborhood. Quick walk to backside of pillbox hike, or short 1--2mi bike / drive to beaches (Kailua or Lanikai). Easy to get out to North Shore, Waimanalo, Honolulu, etc. Excellent home base!

I stayed in the master bedroom/bathroom in Thomas' house, sharing the kitchen and other common spaces with Thomas and occasionally his daughter. He was frequently working and there were no other guests, so I usually had the place to myself. Thomas was a pleasant and welcoming host. Guests are provided specific portions of the refrigerator and specific sets of dishes, but otherwise share the kitchen and eating area. The house is well equipped and comfortable. It's about 3/4 mile from the beach, but direct routes to the beach are blocked by a golf course. Effectively it is 2-3 miles to the beach. A small shopping area with a Safeway, several restaurants, stores and movie theater are within about 3/4 mile. The main downtown area is about 3 miles away.
